Pixels and Palaeoplushies

@palaeoplushies

My name is Bex! She/Her. I'm a self-employed plush maker and designer of scientifically accurate soft toy extinct creatures and obscure critters. I also try my hand at digital painting, sculpting and other arty things. On top of my own creations, I share lots of content related to whatever my interests are at the moment, as well as photos of my pet rats and my aquarium.

What is Palaeoplushies?

  • Palaeoplushies is a small business run by me, and my sister Sarah helps make things too! My website is www.palaeoplushies.com
  • We make soft toys/plushies of both extinct and living creatures. It’s a very broad subject matter, I know. It’s usually just animals that interest me (Bex)!
  • Plushies are made by hand in small batches- they sell out quickly! Designs usually return but there's no set schedule.
  • You can sign up for restock notifications for individual plushies on my website.
  • I cannot reserve plushies for people, take payment in advance or personally email/notify individuals when things restock.
  • We are a very small team. I handle all the product design, manufacture, customer service, paperwork, packaging + posting. Sarah does a lot of sewing too!
  • I try to get all orders fulfilled and posted within a 7 working days of the order being placed. Sometimes there might be delays, but I’m trying my best.
  • I'm based in the UK, and world events have meant that shipping is often slow/delayed by customs. This is out of my control, I'm really sorry!
  • Do I take commissions? No* *Unless it is for Sci-Comm work, in which case I would love to help you out! Got a model organism you'd like to show folks "in person"? I can do that!

Today is World Heritage Day

Oiginally known as the International Monuments and Sites Da it is a global celebration of this planet’s heritage. It’s all about increasing the awareness of the importance of the diversity of cultural and natural heritage and preserving this heritage for future generations..

In Scotland we’re lucky enough to have no less than six UNESCO World Heritage Sites. they are;

St Kilda.

The remote Hebridean island archipelago is one of only two-dozen global locations with World Heritage Status for both natural and cultural significance.

The archipelago shares this honour with natural and cultural wonders such as the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu in Peru and Mount Athos in Greece.

I'd love to visit, but it is a wee bit too expensive for me.

Edinburgh Old and New Towns.

Some people have asked me which part of Edinburgh is covered by this title, well the simple answer is all of it!

The capital is a city of many eras, and its World Heritage Site comprises both the old and new towns. The Auld Toon has preserved much of its medieval street plan and Reformation-era buildings along the wynds of the Royal Mile.

The (relatively) New town contrasts this perfectly with neoclassical and Georgian architecture in regimented order.

Antonine Wall.

I've explored many parts of the wall. Constructed around 142 AD by the Romans, the Antonine Wall marked the north-west frontier of their empire. Stretching from the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde, the Antonine Wall separated the civilised Romans from the wild Caledonians.

The Heart of Neolithic Orkney

I've not visited The Northen Isles as yet, plans were in the early stages to go this year, but my friend ended up in hospita and is still recuprating, hopefully we can get something sorted when she becomes more able.

The Orkney mainland is synonymous with archaeology. It boasts the mysterious standing stones at the Ring of Brodgar and megaliths at Standing Stones of Stenness, as well as the 5,000-year-old settlement of Skara Brae and chambered cairn and passage grave of Maeshowe. Together these four sites form the heart of Neolithic Orkney, which was given World Heritage status in 1999.

The Forth Bridge

I remember as a bairn drawing and painting the bridge with a steam train going over it, but the train going over the "bumps!"

One of our most iconic and beloved bridges, the Forth Bridge was named a World Heritage Site in 2015 just after its 125th anniversary. The bridge was one of the most ambitious projects of its kind ever attempted at the time. When it opened it had the longest single cantilever bridge span in the world.

New Lanark

The last mill closed in the 1960s but a restoration programme saved the 18th-century village from falling into dilapidation.

It is an early example of utopian socialism in Scotland as well as a planned settlement – making New Lanark an important milestone in the historical development of urban planning. I have never visited, I must say I much prefer my ruined castles and abbeys.

Dragon drawings, inspired by this little dragon head fragment I saw on display at the Hunt Museum in Limerick. I just liked its head shape and wanted to imagine how the rest of its body could look like.

Honestly. This.

And also: you are the answer to a specific question this universe is asking.

So please stick around. Don’t take yourself somewhere that means it’ll never get that answer.

You’re needed.

Proud of stomatopods for becoming increasingly famous

When I was a kid, I would have loved to have so many options of weird animals as plush. Kids these days don't know the struggle of loving a weird creature and never seeing it represented in plush.

And that's great! Bring on the adorable marine invertebrate plushes! I'm absolutely ready for a future where someone's well-loved childhood toy is a mantis shrimp!

(Mine was a Folkmanis scallop puppet.)

If it weren't for weird creatures being unavailable as plushies, I wouldn't have ended up with my own business making weird creatures as plushies, because if nobody else was going to make them... It might as well be me.

Also this mantis shrimp is super cute!! I prefer more realistic animal plushies but I'm glad the option for weirder creatures exists!!

Hello to you! It says in your pinned that you don't do commissions, and I wanted to ask if you'd do differently sized plushies of existing designs? I mean, in general. Some of your guys already come in different sizes so I was hoping there's a chance for others too. Is the process of scaling the design easy? (Tho if you'd be willing to I'm personally ready to pay for a single bigger guy for me (not life sized dino, of course, just, you know, 70 cm, maybe 1m?), so I'll be waiting for your response!)

I can do this! It depends on the plush but usually I'm able to go up to 1m long with most of them- what did you have in mind? I usually draw the artwork on a big enough canvas that making them bigger than the typical size won't make them messy, I'm actually working on some BIG STURGEONS for a science out-reach commission at the moment but if there's interest in this sort of thing I could offer them up occasionally!

Lemme know what species you'd like to see!

Solar Eclipse Shadows

These solar eclipse shadows form due to the distance between the sun and the leaves on the trees. The distance and the proximity of the leaves to one another cause for a "lensing" type effect, making the eclipse shadow clearer to the human eye.

The Hoosier Lake Rumbler

(Hoosiercus Rumblerus)

A cave-dwelling dragon about the size of a border collie who has a massive hunger for cheese and/or crackers. Take care to lock your backpack while spelunking.

Aw wow y’all like my little feller ;; guess I’ll have to post more stuff here in the future
