im having feelings about the uffington white horse again

so essentially there’s this cool horse drawn into the hills in england made out of chalk and it’s like 3,000 years old.

people carved trenches 3,000 years ago and filled them with chalk in the shape of a horse but what’s interesting is that if you fail to maintain the horse by adding new chalk regularly, it will disappear. for 3,000 years, we’ve been filling in chalk in this horse so it doesn’t disappear.

we’ll never know what the purpose of the horse was originally. we’ll never know if it had ritual or spiritual significance or if it was just art. but we do know that people maintained it then, and, even though the meaning of the horse has long been lost to time, we continue to maintain it now.

the people who made this horse are long dead, but they live through us still, don’t you think?

couldn’t agree more we’re best friends now

Buffy season 6 is insane. It’s like what if someone you loved died a meaningful and accepting death but you couldn’t live without them so you brought them back. And against all odds, they didn’t come back wrong, but they didn’t WANT to come back at all, and now they have to learn to live in this world again while resenting their friends and family for taking the death they willingly chose away from them. And existence is hell compared to death because in life they never get a break and never get to rest because they’re constantly needed by everyone. And they can’t chose to die a second time because they know what it would do to their loved ones who still never got over the fact that they died the first time. And also there’s a musical episode.

I feel like this is what every other Musical Episode gets wrong.

It always seems to me like showrunners say, hey, everyone loves that Buffy episode! Let's do a musical episode, too! But they completely miss the point of the episode. They never commit to it. It seems like 90% of musical episodes are made with the idea in mind that a lot of people don't like musicals, so it should be okay if people skip this one. They make a just-for-fun one-off filler episode. They give characters a song for absolutely no plot related reason you can see just because the actor can sing. Once More With Feeling is good because it tackles the huge emotions and all the built-up tension. That's what musicals are good at. It's not random filler; it's The Episode they'd been building to all season. Sure, musical-haters will skip it on a rewatch, but if you never watch it, you'll at least need the plot explained so you know what's going on.

The Magicians. They did musical episodes right. There aren't many others I can think of.
