They Call Me Gabriel

@sugarcoatedretribution-blog / sugarcoatedretribution-blog.tumblr.com

Don't you ever, ever presume to know what I am. Archangel. Trickster. Brother. Lover. I've gone by a lot of names over the years, played a lot of different roles. I was the worlds greatest hide and seek champion, until those idiots the Winchesters started the apocalypse and pulled me out of hiding. They got me killed too. In case you were wondering. But now I'm back. Dad only knows how. Actually, it was probably his doing. One thing I do know? Gabriel shrugged sheepishly, he’d gotten so lost in conversation he had managed to forget all the stuff he knew about Omegas and rules and emotions. It was silly really and he felt like a fool, he should know better, but Sam didn’t feel like your usual omega, he was too easy to talk to. Maybe it was his height, other omegas seemed much shorter to Gabriel, even if many of them were taller than he was.
"Sorry, I forget. I live with a lot of alphas, and I didn’t see much of my sister." He brushed at some invisible dirt on his knee. "I should know this stuff."
Thankful for a change of topic he quickly picked up on the nickname thing and ran with it. “Everyone should have at least one good nickname. Let me think…” Gabriel studied the omega carefully, golden eyes drinking in every feature of his from his long lean limbs to the mole on his cheek appreciatively, it was just an excuse really and it wasn’t helping him think of nicknames. Not appropriate ones anyway,he wasn’t sure Sam would appreciate being called ‘tall dark and sexy’. “How about Sammich? It has Sam in it.” And its tasty like you, his mind added. Not the greatest name he’d ever thought of, but not terrible.
As Sam started babbling Gabriel just sat and blinked, the sudden tidal wave of words and information taking a while to filter through and really sink in. When it hit him he didn’t know what to say, he was really glad he didn’t usually blush though. “Woah there Sammmich, slow down and breathe a bit while I backtrack.” He smiled. “First and foremost, I haven’t met a better omega yet so there’s that. Seriously kiddo you need to give yourself more credit, you’re kinda awesome. And if you actually wanted to go out somewhere again… I would actually quite like that, so there’s that.” He paused, focusing very intently on a shoelace. “Even if you just did it for the chocolate.”
“It’s okay, I don’t really hang out with Alphas so.” He was going off of what he remembered…and what he was taught. Not going out in society meant he had to be told what to expect, sometimes he suspected they weren’t really telling everything. “Your sister is an Omega?” That was something he found interesting. No wonder Gabriel was different, he knew how to treat Omegas like people and not accessories.
The tips of Sam’s ears flushed, shy about Gabriel perusing him so intently. He dipped his head and rubbed a hand over his arm, embarrassed. He was lanky, everything about him was too long. And his eyes couldn’t pick a colour to stick to. And he was too skinny. Fearing the worst, he thought his worry was both realized and unfounded when he heard he’d been nicknamed after a sandwich. Sam wrinkled his nose. “Sammich?” Really?
His spiel petered out to silence, his breath hitched just that little bit faster from speeding words out without taking any breaths. Sam’s pleading, rather panicked look smoothed out into sheepishness, then right into bashfulness again when Gabriel mentioned he liked him best. Nobody  liked him best. Sam fiddled with the seam on his jeans for a quiet second. “I wouldn’t just do it for the chocolate…” He mumbled, teasing in a soft tone. He smiled down at the ground, hope sparking in his chest. “You’d have to arrange something with administration.”

The alpha nodded, picking at a few blades of grass. 'Well, half-sister... I think. I always called her sister and we were raised in the same house so that's enough for me." He shrugged. "Taught me a lot of stuff, even if I forget sometimes."

Gabriel waved his hand in the air, frowning . It really wasn't his best and judging from the expression on Sam's face he thought so too. Damn. Better regroup, make something better. Damnit he was blowing this, and not in a fun way. So, as it sometimes did when he was stressed, his mouth started running away from him. "I know, I know, not exactly my greatest work but its not like anyone would approve of sexy." Fuck. He fucked up. Cover up, distract. "I'm way better at working these out normally. You got any ideas kiddo?"

When Sam said he wouldn't just do it for the chocolate Gabriel's smile lit up his whole face. His eyes practically glowed. Until he realised he had no idea how to properly set up a date with an omega, Kali had been all alpha so it had never come up. He thought maybe the knowledge was lodged somewhere in his brain but he was pulling a blank. He couldn't let on. "Oh, uh, yeah sure. I'll have to remember to do that." He fiddled with a piece of grass, knotting it carefullt before returning his attention to Sam. "We could go to the cinema? Unless there's something else you'd rather do?"

It was starting to get ridiculous, how many times he’d blushed in the last half hour. But it wasn’t like he could control it. Sam had an inkling living in the house had made it worse…or maybe it was just Gabriel. He couldn’t remember ever blushing much even with other Alphas. Then again, nobody else had complimented him on his cooking either. His eyes darted down to the coat they were sitting on, trying to ignore the pink that suffused his cheeks, the tips of his ears under his hair. “Thank you.” He mumbled shyly. “If I was allowed I wouldn’t mind the help.”
They were venturing into dangerous territory, weren’t they? Sam brushed a hand through his hair, unconsciously ruffling his bangs as he smile faintly. “It’s not that bad…” He started, his tone lightening to something a little more playful. “I used to have those with my brother before…” Sam trailed off. “Before. Most of the others don’t stay long enough to have one, and I don’t know them that well.” He fiddled with a stray blade of grass. “It’s not fun if you don’t know them well enough to know they won’t start crying.” Pranks were fun sometimes, but he didn’t like when it upset or hurt people. That was why he always hated those shows about people getting injured.
That giggle he’d held back came out softly at Gabriel’s wink. “They who?” He asked, curious.
“I haven’t had either.” Sam admitted with a shrug, trying to downplay the warm grin that’d spread at Gabriel’s proclamation. “I haven’t had chocolate in…a long time.” He was sure he’d been snuck some a couple times, but he couldn’t remember when. “Sounds really good though.” Sam added, tone wistful. Things like that had been too expensive to buy when he’d been with his family. Then the house restricted that sort of thing. Sam crossed his legs and leaned back a little, holding back the urge to lean over and swipe at the crumbs. Gabriel was just…comfortable. He didn’t feel awkward or repulsed. Actually it was getting steadily harder not to touch or fiddle or hug. He dropped his gaze again and chewed on his lower lip, feeling like one of those Betas in movies about having a crush.
Gabriel smiled at the offer, running a hand through his hair awkwardly as he realised how much he wanted it and how much he was not allowed to accept it. He rolled his eyes at the whole situation. “But rules… who even invented all these stupid rules? Always trying to ruin my fun.” He grumbled half heartedly. “It would be awesome if you could.”
He frowned at the idea of people crying, he wasn’t good with tears, no one really cried in his house they just got angry. Whenever anyone had started crying he’d made himself scarce pretty quick. And there had been sadness in Sam’s voice when he trailed off talking about his brother, Gabriel guessed the guy must not have been another omega then. Omegas rarely seemed sad if another was mated, not from what he’d seen anyway. “They cry? That sucks, everyone should be able to take a good joke.” He hummed, remembering that time Luc had almost broken his rib when he pushed a joke so far. “I don’t know whats worse, crying or getting mad.”
Gabriel grinned, breaking off another piece of cookie to occupy his hands so he didn’t try to ruffle Sam’s hair or touch him. Just in case. “Oh they. Y’know, them.” He answered in a fake hushed tone, gesturing around them. “I think my brother started it, when we were really young he taught me loads of pranks. He grew out of it and I just got better at the tricks so the name stuck.” He shrugged. “What about you? Do you have any nicknames?”
The look of shock on his face when Sam said he’d never had fun popcorn was only half faked. It really did suck that he hadn’t had chocolate in years, even if Gabriel himself was kind of biased being such an addict. He drummed his fingers on his knee, starting to get fidgety, it was unfair being so close to someone so adorable and friendly and good looking and not being able to touch. “I could try to sneak you some? If you’d like…” He trailed off and focused very intently on a loose thread on his jeans waiting for s response. He hoped the omega would say yes, it was at least a good excuse to see him again, and he did want to see him.
Sam laughed softly. “The government?” As horrible as it felt sometimes, and as much as he knew they were mostly in it for the profit, he knew if it weren’t for the house and their rules he’d probably have been pawed over by Alphas like the last steak at a barbeque. So he didn’t mind as much as he might have. He chewed the inside of his cheek, because the only way they could was if…and he didn’t know if Gabriel even wanted to, if they’d even match well. So he kept his mouth shut.
He smirked to himself, holding back another chuckle. Obviously Gabriel didn’t know what happened when a large number of hormone-driven, affection-starved, emotionally volatile Omegas were kept together. “Crying happens a lot in the house.” He pointed out. At first he’d been alarmed, his Alpha brother and father hadn’t really been all that sympathetic to tears, but now he was used to it. It was actually a little refreshing, so much empathy, you know, when you didn’t accidentally do it to someone. “We don’t really…get mad that much here.” He shrugged. “Omegas don’t really do so well against aggression.” Sam secretly thought maybe they weren’t built for it. After all Alphas did the aggressing, Betas stood up to them, Thetas did whatever the other two said and Omegas were right there on the bottom. They were better at thinking a way to escape it than to stand up or have much of their own. Sam had practice, but then he also hadn’t much had the typical childhood the others did.
“Oh.” He said, and tried not to laugh. “So…you never grew out of it then.” He teased. His smile ebbed and flickered for a second before he made sure to brighten it, not to let on how much the innocuous question pricked at his emotions. “Not really.” He answered softly. “I’m just Sam.” Dean used to call him lots of things…but not having heard from him in so long…hearing them just hurt. “Sometimes the handlers call me by my last name but I don’t know if that counts.”
Sam looked around, eyes rounding, as if someone might hear. “What, sneak some here?” Though he probably wouldn’t be reprimanded for accepting something a potential Alpha offered, he didn’t really want to risk a punishment. “I don’t know if I’m allowed. I mean if I was out somewhere on a meeting or something than that’d be different and maybe there’d be an exception but it’d still be kind of lying if it was here and they might think it was something worse or a present and then they might get the wrong idea because you’re only supposed to accept presents from intendeds and you probably don’t want to because there are better Omegas and then there’s be expectations and the others would do that thing and I don’t want you to be stuck just because you’re being nice or anything and I’d hate to do that cause you’re just the best Alpha I’ve met here and I wish I remembered our actual time going out cause I bet it was really awesome even though I probably acted stupid and why the hell are you even talking to me when I did that and I should probablygoorsomethingbecauseI’mprobablytakingupyourtimeand….” Sam had a bad habit of babbling nervously and he wasn’t quite sure what had broken the gate but now all his words were tumbling out. He wasn’t sure he could stop them without Gabriel corking the flow with a reassurance or two.

Gabriel shrugged sheepishly, he’d gotten so lost in conversation he had managed to forget all the stuff he knew about Omegas and rules and emotions. Gabriel smiled and nodded. “Well, I think I might have to try persuade someone to try baking with me again. Extra ingredients is a good idea!” He chuckled, considering Sam carefully. “Shame I can’t ask you to help, you’re a better baker than any of my brothers.” And it was a shame, but getting help from an unmated omega wouldn’t be allowed, even if it was it would be terribly dangerous and really he wouldn’t want to inflict his older brothers on anyone. He thought maybe Sam would have liked Anna though, before she left.
"But we can’t have you bored! That’s just cruel and unusual punishment." The alpha grinned, amber eyes lighting up as his mind started to run at a million miles a minute. There was so much fun to be had, even trapped inside a house, he was living proof of that. Albeit proof that had gotten itself into trouble more often than not. "Have you ever tried starting a prank war? Because if you ever need any ideas I can tell you they don’t call me the Trickster for nothing." He grinned and winked at the younger, trying not to let his mind wander too far into thoughts of pulling tricks with the other boy.
Gabriel nodded, glad that the omegas did at least get to have some fun and enjoy some of the good things in life. He still didn’t understand why they weren’t allowed to just layer up their food however they wanted, its not like it seemed to make much difference. He had always sneaked chocolate bars to his sister and she never looked any podgier for it. She had always done so well among the alphas, treats or no treats. But then again maybe she was the exception, he’d not done any proper tests himself. Either way he couldn’t exactly judge he thought, subconsiously sucking in the slight extra pudge at his middle, maybe hd should start taking better care of himself. But then sgain, candy.
"Good. You should be allowed to have the good stuff!" He grinned, trying to remember his last trip to an actual theatre where he bought popcorn. "Caramel covered is my favourite. Have you ever tried chocolate drizzled popcorn? One of my brother’s girlfriends made some once, it was awesome." He paused to lick some chocolate and crumbs from the corner of his mouth.

Felt like forever. Sam didn’t say this outloud, but it really did, especially when he’d been there as long as he had. Somehow, despite his thoughts, Gabriel still managed to get him smiling again. He was sure despite the other’s cheery nature he’d probably run a streak through the place if he’d been allowed in past the front rooms. That wasn’t even considering the whole ‘Alpha in a house full of unclaimed Omegas’ thing. There was a reason the heat rooms were as far from the front entrance as possible.
Sam was still sort of blushing when he returned with the teetering pile, eyes bright with anticipation. If asked he would have said it was to have someone try his baking, not because he liked the Alpha’s company. It had occurred to him that no Alpha would have gone this long without someone to greet him, and that maybe, considering the greeting Gabriel had given him, he’d asked to have a lower-key second meeting with him but hadn’t wanted to mention it. Sam knew if it’d been an official date he might have acted a little more formally. He was just surprised anyone would want to see him again, most tried to leave the second they realized how a) tall or b) standoffish he was. Then again, he’d never met an Alpha quite like Gabriel.
That fading flush returned full force as the Alpha complimented and groaned about his cookies, and he tried to muffle an embarrassed little giggle. Sam was pretty damn proud of himself for that reaction, considering he’d never actually had anyone eat his food before. He was grateful that instead of mentioning how pink he was Gabe instead turned to gesture outside and lead the way to a patch of grass. (Which only really cemented his thoughts about this being a sort of date)
Sam shrugged and carefully placed the plate down in the middle of the coat, trying not to show how charmed he was by the gesture. It was like something out of those worn novels the Omegas were always passing around each other, fueling hopes about Alphas on shining steeds or Earls in ballrooms. He sat on the coattails and fiddled with a lock of hair that’d been curling around his ear. “It’s kind of boring. The classes are all traditional stuff and most of it is just waiting for things to happen. Cooking class is fun, but we aren’t allowed to eat most of it…so. It’s nice being around so many other Omegas….even though they leave…And there’s a big library down the road.” Sam rummaged and produced the small carton of milk, offering it to Gabriel with a bright smile. “Movie nights are the best I think.” Half of them usually cried at the end but it was nice having others comfort you if you do rather than tease you about it, like his brother would have if he ever teared up about an ending.
Gabriel hadn’t failed to notice the flush on Sam’s cheeks, and he’d probably made it worse moaning over the cookie, but he said nothing. It was flattering, no one really blushed around him unless he was being particularly brash and half the time not even then (he swore some of the slaps Kali had given him still bruised), and he didn’t want to scare the kid off. He was enjoying this.
Once Sam had sat down Gabriel did the same, crossing his legs in front of him and stealing another cookie in one fluid movement. Michael would probably kill him for this later, when the sugar rush took hold and his usual exuberance was dialled up to 11, but it was totally worth it. And besides Luci would find it hillarious… just as long as he didn’t start another fight… Pushing the thoughts away Gabriel smiled at Sam around the cookie, warm golden eyes staying fixed on the omega. He really was something, tall and buff and really rather sexy but still adorable and innocent.
"It doesn’t sound too bad." He smiled, sipping some milk and licking cookie crumbs from around his mouth. "Except the waiting. That would suck, I’ve never been good at waiting. But cooking lessons sound fun. I’m not allowed to help in the kitchen, I eat the ingredients." The alpha laughed, smoothing down his hair a little. Looking at Sam it kind of struck him that this impromptu totally-not-semi-stalking meetup had kind of turned into a date. He was probably going to get into trouble for that. Shifting a little he tried to keep his mind on the conversation, thinking too much would definitley get him into trouble. "Movie nights? Do you get popcorn? Because you know its not a proper movie night unless you get popcorn."
He edged a little closer to the other boy. Still far enough apart to be safe, no touching or innapropriate closeness that could get him into trouble, but closer so he could study the boy more carefully. Breathe in his smell.
Sam wasn’t sure he’d ever smiled this much around an Alpha. Well, not an Alpha he wasn’t related to anyway. Gabriel just seemed to prompt that response, even just by grinning first. He’d never warranted this much attention before. The others…they were more interested in talking about themselves, what would happen when they got together, as if it was a given Sam would choose them simply by going out to dinner. Gabriel was different. He swore for a little bit in the middle there he’d been forgotten in the midst of his enthusiasm about the cookies. He wondered if it was an Alpha thing, his brother used to get that excited about pie.
He chuckled softly. Sam could imagine that, Gabriel seemed like the kind of guy that would try to distract him just to get his fingers in the batter. “You’d just have to make sure to get extra.” Sam pointed out, just shy of offering to accept help. First off, he wasn’t allowed in the house, and second, the only other scenario was if he was in Gabriel’s kitchen, and for an unmated Omega that was both highly improper and incredibly dangerous. Alphas weren’t cited much for self control, but Omegas that had lived in a house weren’t very good at it either. They were tactile, and having rules that hindered physical contact didn’t exactly help in the matter. So he bit his tongue against saying anything else and suggesting anything stupid. He wasn’t even sure Gabriel wasn’t just being nice.
“It’s not that bad.” It could have been worse, despite how much he disliked it. “Just gets boring.” Sam was sure it wouldn’t have been as bad if he hadn’t been there quite so long. It was supposed to be temporary, but he’d been there for years now.
Banishing the thoughts he smiled again. “Yeah, but we have to sneak stuff on it. We aren’t technically really allowed.” Apparently butter and salt made it fattening, and everyone knew nobody wanted a pudgy Omega. It was a society thing. There were studies that specifically pointed out Omegas didn’t necessarily get overweight due to their genes, but traditionalists didn’t really want to pay attention to those, to Sam’s annoyance. You didn’t know how much you missed cheese till you weren’t permitted it anymore. He used to eschew things like that, now he’d do quite a lot for a hamburger at some greasy joint. “Sometimes we’re allowed to go to the movies.” Not all at once, but a couple people every little while. It always reminded Sam of field trips. He grinned, toothy. “That’s when we’re allowed the good stuff.”

Gabriel smiled and nodded. “Well, I think I might have to try persuade someone to try baking with me again. Extra ingredients is a good idea!” He chuckled, considering Sam carefully. "Shame I can't ask you to help, you're a better baker than any of my brothers." Gabriel smiled a little and nodded, looking around at the house. “Shitty but safe.” He agreed. “It’s not forever, don’t look so down about it. I’d offer to trade places with you, my brothers are a bunch of massive dicks, but I think that would be frowned on. And y’know, massively dangerous. For everyone.”
When Sam mentioned his hanging around before the older man barked out a laugh. “Shh, don’t tell them that. People will think I’m stalking you.” He teased, eyes sparkling. ‘Now mush, and bring me baked chocolatey goodness.”
While the omega was gone Gabriel found himself bouncing on the balls of his feet like a nervous teenager. He wasn’t nervous, or excited, not at all. Well maybe a little. It was stupid, but he’d taken a shine to the tall boy when he’d first seen him, drunk and overly adorable. The other alphas thought the kid was too tall, not omega enough, but Gabriel liked that. Then again he wasn’t the typical alpha. And none of them were going to let him forget his last relationship, being bossed around by a girl even another alpha… it was shameful. Okay so maybe he was a little nervous, maybe he liked the kid a bit and he was worried he wouldn’t be alpha enough for yet another omega to like.
When he saw Sam coming out again with the plate of cookies he had to fight down the urge to run and hug him. Gabriel was too tactile to be around omegas really, it was hard to stay restrained. “Those look amazing.” He grinned, taking one and biting into it with an almost obscene noise of pleasure. “They taste better. You’re a hero.”
He glanced around, spotting a flat section of grass and smiling. Pulling off his coat Gabriel set it on the grass and gestured to it. “Sit, we can call it at picnic and you can tell me what living here is like. I’ve never been anywhere like this myself, lived at home and all.”
Felt like forever. Sam didn’t say this outloud, but it really did, especially when he’d been there as long as he had. Somehow, despite his thoughts, Gabriel still managed to get him smiling again.

Gabriel hadn't failed to notice the flush on Sam's cheeks, and he'd probably made it worse moaning over the cookie, but he said nothing. It was flattering, no one really blushed around him unless he was being particularly brash and half the time not even then (he swore some of the slaps Kali had given him still bruised), and he didn't want to scare the kid off.

And besides Luci would find it hillarious... just as long as he didn't start another fight... Pushing the thoughts away Gabriel smiled at Sam around the cookie, warm golden eyes staying fixed on the omega. He really was something, tall and buff and really rather sexy but still adorable and innocent.

"It doesn't sound too bad." He smiled, sipping some milk and licking cookie crumbs from around his mouth. "Except the waiting. That would suck, I've never been good at waiting. But cooking lessons sound fun. I'm not allowed to help in the kitchen, I eat the ingredients." The alpha laughed, smoothing down his hair a little.

Donna wasn’t, in theory, a difficult person to get on with. God knows she could be a bit shrill, a touch over bearing. Loud. Opinionated. Et cetera.
All right, she was a pain in the ass, didn’t mean she was a bad person. She wasn’t asking for much, just a bit of respect-please and thank you and yes, ma’am, just like Mum taught.
So, yeah, that little slip of a thing who thought she could barrel right into Donna, make her drop her bag, and not even try to apologize? She got off easy with an ‘Oi! Watch it!' It was just Donna's notorious bad luck rearing it's ugly head, then, when the little bit of nothing's eyes turned inky, impossibly black.

Gabriel had been watching the redhead for a while. She was interesting, and it took a lot to interest a millenia old archangel. She was human but she was so much more, something impossibly bigger, but exactly what he couldn't quite tell. Plus she was amusing, and that counted for a lot in Gabriel's book.

Turns out she also had a streak of luck that could rival a Winchester. He'd clocked the demon earlier but now the woman had snapped at it and well that was never going to end in smiles. Rendering himself visible again he whistled to get the demon's attention (and no doubt also Donna's in the process). "I think you're supposed to apologise." He commented with a wave.

i made a thing

i don’t think i’m as freaked out by the dark anymore
