Of love, the exchange. 2013 A performance still. A moment captured between two performers. Although there was a base structure for the performers, much of their interactions were created in the moment, with the specific exchange they were having and their specific partner; much like how we interact in real life. This moment captured between performers @turnerschofield and @sarahdharas hits me in the gut. In love, we give and we take. We push, and are put in the corner. We lock hold of each other and look deeply. We look through; deep through or straight through. We lean in. We give up. We give in. We throw are arms up. We hold our breath. Scroll to see all. “Of love” multimedia performance and installation exhibit that presented the varying landscapes of love through three distinct visual interpretations. 1: The Exchange. Using interaction, gesture, expression, and light touch, four performers went through the stages of love with each other from first sight, doubt, crush, falling in and out, betrayal, and grief. 2: The Weight - a column made of hope stone in the center of the gallery- a visual metaphor of the heaviness of emptiness 3:The Movement. 14 dancers from @momentumdancecollective danced to 22 songs that ‘made you feel it’ also covering the emotional landscape of love. As they moved, they made gestural markings in the space around them- as though they were tracing their memories. The music could only be heard by the audience through headphones. A dedication to the moon. In this last day of the first month of a new year, a full moon floats in the clouds. It was blue then red then blue then so bright it was hard to look at it directly. I felt the moon as the wind was at my back, gently pushing me forward. I breathed in the loveliness of it all. To feel the cold bite at my cheeks, the frozen earth beneath my feet, the howl of a dog in the distance. I stood by the fire and watched the gold flecks dance in the air as they disappeared. Derma. Birch bark, gesso, hair, wood. Skin is our body’s largest organ; the fastest-growing. It’s a protective barrier. In warmer climates, the bottoms of tree trunks are painted with a thick layer of white paint. This is believed to protect vulnerable tress against borers, disease, heat, and the tenderness of being new, when the bark just might not be enough. Our bodies, our minds, our hearts our bones our skin all have systems of painting on layers. What if we peel back the bark? What if the bark is enough?
