(same anon) Oh wow! Thanks so much for the advice. It's refreshing to hear how others got into the industry! I currently going to junior college and won't have bachelor's degree. Is it still possible to get work in entertainment arts if I have no degree from a university? I have much self-doubt right now and I look up to you a lot!
Yes, absolutely. There’s more than one way to break into an industry- my portfolio spoke louder than my degree ever did, and lots of people in the field who come from unrelated degrees and/or educational backing. Hope that helps!
Hi! I love your art and want to know how you made it into the industry? Do you have any tips for aspiring artists? (i saw that you're a bg painter in you info that's why i ask)
Hi anon! I got in with an extra helping of luck and timing, haha. Shortly after graduating w/a fine arts degree I was halfway ready on going back to school to study animation, since I didn’t have any solid education foundations on that front. There was an animation fair happening in the city so I decided to go to attend workshops and see if I could get any critiques on my stuff to improve. I had my portfolio on hand and showed it to a couple of studios tabling there that day, which led to a number of interviews and tests, and it’s led me to where I am now. I always think back to the fair, and if I hadn’t attended then I’d be in school right now studying to get into where I currently am. A loooot of self-doubt and nerves going on in my mind at the time! It still freaks me out sometimes, and there’s still a lot that I’m playing catch-up to but I’m really content with where I am now and am working on stronger future portfolios. Everyone’s path of getting their foot in the industry is different, and mine happened to be a sort of roundabout way. It proves that you don’t have to have studied animation to get your foot in but if you are a student looking into post-secondary education I do recommend you to get into an animation program if you can! As far as tips for aspiring artists, I don’t think there’s much I can say that hasn’t been said before- continually practice and improve, research artists, do studies, the whole shebang. Good luck anon!
First piece of 2017! Gotta get back in the habit of arting more
My 2016 year end review. It’s been fairly stagnant for the most part - characters on plain background has definitely made a return :’). Not going to lie, I’ve been pretty MIA on the drawfront this year outside of work and I’ve literally just have like these 12ish pieces that I’ve accumulated this year. That being said, there was a lot of shift in focus away from me and art and more towards me and, well, other life stuff! I’ve been more active in my personal life socially, and going into stuff that I’ve wanted to do but haven’t done so in a while - vacations, joining a gym (and going consistently which, uh, is still a work in progress. But progress is happening!), general other treat your self things here and there that I’ve kind of forgone in the past to improve my art skills (and on that note of TYS, drawing fanart more often - thank you, bioware, for taking me down this hellspiral). Still looking for that balance but that’ll be something for 2017 me to get on! My drawing has gotten stiffer bc of the lack of practice but I’m pretty happy with how my (one and only) December art came out, so if that’s any indication it’ll be some looser stuff happening in the future. As usual, thank you all for still sticking by me (via tumblr or twitter - i’m more alive on twit these days!) and here’s to seeing what 2017 art has in store!
Less than a week left, but we’re more than halfway there! Here’s a final preview of some cutscene art you’ll get to see if The Arcana visual novel is funded~
