Look…. To start a book… You have to make room in yourself for new characters and worlds. Do I look like I have the emotional energy for that? Do I look like I can trust like that right now? Just show me the things I already know pay good returns on my investment, except I also want to read something new so I guess they can be in a coffee shop this time.

what society needs to understand is that friendship and romance are not ranks, tiers, or levels. they are not above or below each other. romance is not a promotion. friendship is not a demotion. romance is not “more than” being friends with someone. friendship and romance are concepts that exist on equal terms, side by side. sometimes they happen to coincide. other times they never intersect at all. how relationships are classified is up to the individuals involved but like?? neither is inherently more or less valuable is the thing

Writing for a new fandom is always so... upsetting? :’)) It gives a peculiar kind of stomachache for me. Especially now, when there’s no active Tumblr fandom for it, I’m not on its Twitter fandom for irl reasons, and discord server is a general server with hundreds of people and thus very hard to make any connections with.

I’ve also not felt this vulnerable with a piece of media in a long, long time so I feel a bit out of my element. A lot more fragile and a lot less certain. It is like starting a new journey and it will either be a stone thrown in a lake at night that nobody heard and will never know of, or beginning of a new path with new companions along the way. Either way, I’ll be there with the story that I crafted, so I guess, that’s good enough in itself too.

New draft emoji include 3 proposals I co-wrote!

A draft list of proposed emoji were recently passed through Unicode. This set included three emoji that I co-wrote proposals for: Palm Up Hand, Palm Down Hand and Face With Peeking Eye. These three proposals were written with Gretchen McCulloch and Jennifer Daniel.

These proposals came directly out of the work I did with Gretchen looking at the way emoji act as digital gestures. A palm up gesture means you’ll be able to offer someone cake, a palm down means you’ll finally get a mic drop. And a peeking eye offers an interpersonal meta-commentary we felt was missing from the current set.

You can see details on the full set of 35 recommended emoji and the proposals in this PDF document (Unicode do a lot in PDF rather than on websites!).

From here these emoji will be added to the draft candidate list on the Unicode website, and if they pass muster they will be on devices as part of Unicode 14.0 in 2022. Things don’t move fast when you’re implementing permanent standards!

I’m also looking forward to seeing the hands heart, as well as the heart fingers/money gesture, and the pointing at you emoji. I also feel like I’m going to get a lot of use out of melty face and flat battery.
