‘I will speak, I will act.’
I know a lot of my followers don’t follow American soccer, but all sports should be using San Diego Loyal as an example.
Last week, Elijah Martin was called a racist slur by Omar Ontiveros during a game versus LA Galaxy II. This was heard by multiple players, referees, and coaches, even though Ontiveros wasn’t ejected or punished for the slur. The SD coaching staff didn’t hear of this incident until after the game. Because of this, SD forfeited the point they earned from this game and all Loyal players took a knee before last night’s game. Since then, the Ontiveros’s contract has been terminated, Read more here.
Last night (September 30th), Collin Martin (who is an openly gay midfielder for San Diego, and who has been out for over two years) was called a homophobic slur during a game against Phoenix Rising FC. Again, the player wasn’t punished even though many heard what he said. The Loyal manager even asked the other team to pull the player, and they refused.
In protest, the entire team walked off before the game had even finished, even though they were winning 3-1 and fighting for a playoff spot. This game was vital to their playoff hopes, but to the Loyal, meant nothing next to these incidents. More info here.
Landon Donavon, who is the Loyal manager, made this statement after.
“We went through a really hard incident last week in the LA match and we made a vow to ourselves, to our community, to our players, to the club, to USL, that we would not stand for bigotry, homophobic slurs, things that don’t belong in our game.” and also added “If they’re not willing to act, then we have to act.” which is a theme of their organization.
Please, watch this video of Donavon - who is an extremely respected former American player - explaining why they decided to act.
