"people get hurt here."

People fall down and stay down and I don’t like the way the song goes.

You’ve had everything taken from you at one point or another. You’re a poorly pieced together man consisting of scraps of who you used to be, who you had to be, and who you wanted to be - you like to think the you, sitting in the police station with your feet on the desk throwing paper balls at Jill would be proud of who you are now. You’re not so sure.

What you are sure of, is that it’s unfair. It’s unfair that this monster who tried to kill your sister, who tried to kill his own child, gets to live whilst you keep the only proof that STARS ever existed in a worn cardboard box sealed up with tape. You’ve spent years recalling that photo on the projector, of a bunch of sinister looking blondes in labcoats with your former boss. You’ve spent years of your life imagining them planning it out, leading them into the woods, watching from black and white cctv cameras as the dogs tore them open.

It’s not fair.

People get hurt but it’s always the wrong people. The wrong place, the wrong time.

Wesker died, twice, as far as you know but it was never enough to satisfy you. Never enough to justify all the deaths and the friends you didn’t get to bury. You never got to make him suffer (and you figure if you had the chance, you wouldn’t have been able to, and he would have laughed as you hit him.)

Birkin, however -

you hit him. Over and over. Until your fists are raw and bleeding, as the shards of his broken bone get caught in your knuckles. You think of Sherry, the Birkin that you risked your life for, that Piers died for, and what she would think of you.

You don’t know her well enough to feel guilty about it.

You hit him again.

This is for Joseoph.

And again.

This is for Kenneth.

And again.

This is for Enrico.

And again.

This is for Forest.

It doesn’t make you feel better, and you knew it wouldn’t. In some way, it’s justice, the kind you’ve had to accept because true justice is something you can never get. Birkin didn’t kill them, but he was responsible - just as much as Wesker.

You imagine the two of them laughing in front of a table with all of your files on it. The photo of STARS you have is faded and brown now, the face of Wesker scratched out, but you can’t change the past.

You hit him again and hope he chokes on his teeth.

I think the best part of expanding the Progenitor virus origin stuff is that now canon is basically that Spencer was interested in perfecting humanity, eternal life, ect But then Umbrella handed off Progenitor to their Best and Brightest who - unfortunately - happen to be teenage Birkin and Wesker and this happens

and that’s basically canon

CHRIS:

“Go to waste? She’s a human being! What is wrong with you? What kind of Father could you possibly be if your solution wasn’t to put the girl out of her misery? She was just a fuckin’ kid.”
It’s then he realises - these are the types of people Umbrella is made of. People like Birkin, people like Wesker - people who have no capacity, it seems, to care for other people. Wesker didn’t think twice about throwing them to the dogs,  betraying their trust, destroying everything they’d built. They meant nothing to him, and now there was only five of them left.  Birkin’s no better, and, for a moment, he feels sorry for that child. Even if he’s telling the truth, and Lisa had already been experimented on when they met - she was just a kid and he had no issue with what they’d done to her. To her family.
It makes him sick.
All of it had. Each file, each report or scribbled note he had found had forced him to confront the truth of it all. Raccoon City was built on lies. Their lives were built on lies. Irons had already proved he couldn’t be trusted, and now Chris knew - they had to do something. He had to do something.
Umbrella had to pay for what they’d done.
There was no other option. He and Jill both had the foresight to grab whatever they could, stuff it into their pockets - not as much as they needed, and most of the evidence was burnt to a crisp alongside the mansion. Nothing they had kept had been concrete.
If nothing else -
“I saw the photo of your team in the lab. Nice momento. You knew Wesker, huh?”
Traitorous bastard.
“He’s dead.”

William has to make a conscious effort to keep a grin from leaping across his face when he hears Redfield’s words, a verbal confirmation that he did his job correctly and with brutal efficiency. He succeeded.

Hell, he wants to laugh--a different kind of laugh than the cackling that had filled the last minute of James Marcus’ life. Then it was simply shock, adrenaline, the satisfaction of completing their task, excitement as he stared at the glowing horizon of the future now that t was his. In this moment, however, the laugh he kills is one of joy and the great pride of knowing that one has thoroughly, utterly succeeded.

He cannot and does not let his glee show through. Instead, his pale blue eyes remain as frigid as ever. I’m aware.

A moment of silence punctuates the brief reply as Birkin considers the potential answers to Redfield’s question. Anything he says here will have no audience but the burnt skeletons of the trees around them, and any further information Redfield attains will die here with him. He will quite literally take it to the grave, provided that the meaning of the word is taken loosely. (Lye, William thinks, will be the best way to dispose of him. He and Wesker were too careless back when they got rid of Marcus’ body.).

Nonetheless, William is cautious; should this man by some freak chance escape, Umbrella--as well as he himself--have nothing to gain from Redfield planting the idea of Wesker’s involvement in t in the simple minds of the public.

“Do you really find it surprising that I do? Umbrella is not as large of a corporation as you would think when viewing it from the outside. It was only inevitable that our paths would cross.
