Bloodsports
Just got my hands on this last week. Been listening to it on a daily basis. With the album sequence. And also in shuffle mode. lol!
Here's my syiok sendiri song-by-song review:
Barriers - Sounds a bit like U2 circa Joshua Tree. Especially the drums. Great opener anyways
Snowblind - Opening sounds like something from Dog Man Star. We Are The Pigs perhaps? Brett's familiar yelping. Ah love the guitar riff
It Starts and Ends With You - This is pretty poppy. Don't really like the song, but I like the lyrics.
Like a cause without a martyr, Like an effigy of balsa, Like a hairline crack in a radiator, Leaking life
Sabotage - Whoa! Love the opening. Love. Love. Love. Love the lyrics too.
She knows that there are places I won't go, But if I did, I'd make her follow A trail of seeds that leads across the road, And colours like a raven's shadow
For the Strangers - Whoa! Another fave. Love the opening guitar riff. This song is almost for me. I've always felt the stranger among my peers. A little different. e.g. I requested for Suede's Dog Man Star for my post SPM exams (equivalent to O levels) reward. And there's a naked man lying on the front cover. And it was not sold in my country. That's strange for a 17 year old girl, no?
Dedicated to all the strangers out there
Hit Me - Simple pop song. But I love it. This is a guilty pleasure. Come on hit me!
Sometimes I Feel I'll Float Away - Brooding. Another favourite. Totally love the chorus where Brett sings "away" Cockney-style. Reminds me of his singing in Suede, the first album.
What Are You Not Telling Me? - Very hauntingly beautiful. Like The Living Dead from Sci Fi Lullabies.
Always - Gosh love the opening oriental strings. And the guitar lines. Feels also like some rock kapak (Malay rock) song that I love from the 80s. The instrumental break after the chorus somewhere in the middle reminds me of The Asphalt World from Dog Man Star.
Faultlines - Another beautiful song. Could have come from Dog Man Star.
Celebrate the pale dawn, celebrate the birdsong, Celebrate, this is your time, Although we live in the wreckage and on the faultlines. And everything we own is not everything we are, With every word we breathe, we live, we live again.
Love all the songs, with the exception of It Starts and Ends With You perhaps. But all the lyrics are sweepingly beautiful. Beautiful poetry. My only complaint is that the album is too short at just about 40 minutes. But perhaps short but sweet is best.
Welcome back Suede!
