#that fucking awesome moment when your best friend stays at school for christmas because he knows you’ve got nothing to go home to and he wants you to be happy
#people who hate ron must also hate friendship and love

the thing to remember is that ron has always been not-quite the most ANYTHING in his family. he doesn’t remember being the youngest because ginny’s only a year younger. he’s not the only girl. he’s not the smartest, the cleverest, the tallest, the strongest, he’s not even the most freckly or redheaded! he doesn’t have any particular standout skills, (except perhaps chess, and my particular headcanon is that Molly taught him that.) What Ron DOES have is Harry. For whatever twist of reason, Harry latched on to Ron right away and NEEDED him, terribly a lot. Harry is likely the first thing, person or plant or animal or semi-aware magical object, that Ron has EVER voluntarily chose to spend his energy on. Harry shows Ron that he’s valuable and unique. To Harry, there’s Ron, and then there’s all these other people over here doing stuff that is inexplicable and sometimes fascinating but also scary. So Ron doesn’t like Christmas at home all that much because it’s all a big mess of people who are better at things than he is. But Christmas at Hogwarts with Harry means that Ron is able to be the best friend of them all. It’s selfish, but it’s also clear from the moment Harry steps into his life that the thing that makes Ron special from the rest of his family isn’t his sense of humor, his bravery, his intelligence, his strength. It’s his friendship. Ron is the best at being a friend. And that’s what Harry gives him - a way to stand out.
