I sat around my apartment all day yesterday listening to Prawn and thinking about I'd like to see them. Around mid-afternoon I realized they were playing in Little Italy that very night and I just happened to have a spare $10. The openers were La Querelle, First Ghost, Gulfer, and Peace Be Still. I missed the first two but the rest were great. Gulfer were like a mathy/post-something band. Their entire set was pretty much in sync guitar tapping and 3/4 of them sang for most of the set - needless to say it was entertaining to watch. Peace Be Still sounds like post-hardcore does the emo revival. Their set was great - short, fast songs and an generous attempt at some kind of weird in-between-song stand up that I didn't understand but everyone else seemed to get. Prawn took the stage shortly after Peace be Still. The Venue was pretty full by this point. I find show attendance is normally pretty proportional to the energy the band has while playing. Sure, there is definitely a minimum that every band has stage presence wise, but a good crowd adds to that. Prawn had an entirely disproportionate level of energy; they were the fastest moving band I've ever shot. Their live sound was totally on point, and since I had been spinning Kingfisher all day, I can vouch that is was basically album quality live.
