Jack. Skeptic, queer, too old to be here. US Midwesterner in exile in the South. This blog is a place for all things Sherlock, especially Johnlock, and whatever else appeals to me at the moment (most likely GoT/MCU/DW/LotR).

Reason #1,324,789 of why I love this show.

This was a casual side conversation between Bashir and Sisko about a fellow crew member, completely unrelated to the episode’s plot, and its just so sweet.

It’s nice to know that if you’re a pregnant father-to-be on DS9, your buddies Julian and Miles will build you a hatchling pond, buy you baby clothes, and throw you a shower eagerly attended by the station’s commanding officer (who was practically beaming with joy when he found out that you were expecting).

How wonderful.

And they speak of it so casually with no judgement! Love this!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OH MY GOD. I DID NOT KNOW THIS.

Vilix’pran gets mentioned a couple more times on the show, and we find out that:

A) he buds twice more, and had quadruplets during his second budding and an unspecified number for his third, bringing the total number of babies to between eight and 18

B) Kira says she’ll have to assign him bigger quarters after the third budding

C) and the babies have wings that can get tangled up with each other when they play together

D) AND ALSO that Vilix’pran gets promoted from Ensign to Lieutenant (so clearly Starfleet has some rockin’ maternity/paternity policies and thus parenthood is not an obstacle to career advancement)

The more you know. :D

Well that got exponentially more adorable and awesome quickly.

I’m so devastated that agent carter has been cancelled, I feel Like I’ve experienced her legitimate funeral. In honour of that here’s a colour pencil drawing from my sketchbook.

I’ve only managed to make it through the first two novels and the adventures because every time I try to read a Holmes story I am acutely aware that it’s been 130 years and still no one has made a canonically gay Holmes and Watson yet and I just get so tired that I have to stop

For their 4 month anniversary, Irene sends Femlock and FemJohn a hitachi magic wand. That buys her enough time to commit 4 crimes and flee the country before those two idiots shamble out of their bedroom. Mycroft is LIVID, but all of Irene's victims turned out to have had it coming, and with some of the embezzled money, she made a donation to an animal shelter in Sherlock's name, and Sherlock is Fine with it.

Irene , a friend to all the gays, in her own way

One of the most important things I’ve learned as a Real Adult™ is the importance of a job half done.

Today I did a load of dishes, wiped off my stove, and swept the kitchen floor. Did I do the best job, or finish every dish? No! My stove still has that caked on caramel that I need to bust out an SOS pad to take care of, one of our big pots is still sitting in the sink, and somehow a kitty kibble unearthed itself while I was wiping down the stove (?? how??).. but the kitchen looks a LOT better. It’s once again an inhabitable, usable space.

Parents, bosses, teachers, even my own self, harp upon absolute perfect completion of a task as the be all and end all of a job well done, but god damn, my kitchen isn’t terrible because I took the time to improve it. Little steps, especially when you’re struggling, are important. They mean a LOT. They are a sign that you won, if only in that brief moment, and they make getting all the other stuff done so much easier later on down the road.

I don’t think you need to ‘write for women’, per say. You don’t need to write about shoes and babies and periods. Women have brains the way men have brains. If you just change the name of the character; that’s what Angelina Jolie did with Salt, which was a role originally for Tom Cruise. I think male writers maybe panic that they can’t write female characters too much. Just change John to Jane. (x)

Warren and Tyagi demonstrated that buying common luxury items wasn’t the issue for most Americans. The problem was the fixed costs, the things that are difficult to cut back on. Housing, health care, and education cost the average family 75 percent of their discretionary income in the 2000s. The comparable figure in 1973: 50 percent. Indeed, studies demonstrate that the quickest way to land in bankruptcy court was not by buying the latest Apple computer but through medical expenses, job loss, foreclosure, and divorce.
Giving up a latte or another such small extravagance in this environment wasn’t going to be enough. Yet the personal finance shills continued to tell people their problems were mostly of their own making.

This strikes me as being directly related to those jackholes who are enraged when someone poor has some small or relatively small luxury: they think this is how economics work.

Well how bout that!

“Our favourite [influence] is the Billy Wilder film, The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes. It’s absolutely wonderful. It plays fast and loose with some of the most revered concepts but, in the end, it is an incredibly nuanced, moving piece of cinema.”

Mark Gatiss, 2010. [x]

As we all know, Billy Wilder’s The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes is considered to be Mark Gatiss’ and Steven Moffat’s template for their version of Sherlock Holmes, as well as their favorite adaptation. Gatiss considers Wilder and Diamond to be “among the best screenwriters in the world”.

What they don’t mention is that the commonly-available version of the film is, in fact, heavily edited, largely due to censorship laws and Wilder’s conflicts with the Doyle estate at the time of filming

The original screenplay was what Wilder consider a symphony with four movements, including multiple cases and an expansion on Holmes’ relationship with drugs, an extended prologue, as well as more personal conversations with Dr. Watson.

The final release only included two of those four movements.

Some of those deleted scenes are included in the special features of the TPLoSH DVD.

However, there is no way to fully grasp the arc of Wilder’s original, uncensored vision of the film without viewing the full screenplay.

Luckily for us, there’s an elderly Sherlockian out there with an impressive screenplay archive, a love of Wilder films, and a generous spirit. All credit to him for this find.

I’ve included a free download link for the full roadshow version of the TPLoSH script below. I hope to see some good meta come out of it, and that it sparks some interesting fandom discussions.

Enjoy!

I found pics of Baby!Mycroft.

They need captions.

“For goodness sake, that boy won’t even be conceived for another six years and somehow he’s already causing an international diplomatic incident. Anthea, can you send a car around to collect me right away please — and remember the rear-facing child seat…”

OMG. Somebody. Please. TWEET THESE TO MARK!
