The first time I was arrested for real was at Venice High School in 1995 - I got arrested on my moms birthday during my second period class. I had just finished a math test that I had studied real hard for the night before - I never really cared for school nor did I have the attention span for what they were teaching but I made the varsity basketball team that year and I really wanted to play - 5 of us got arrested for something that happened at VHS the week before - I wasn’t even at school the day it happened but a bunch of really mean detectives cuffed me and took me downtown and screamed at me all afternoon - we ended up getting sent to Sylmar juvenile hall and then in the morning transferred to Eastlake CJH • I never got a phone call home to talk to my family and let them know where I was.. nothing. After being there for a week I met Father Boyle and told him my dilemma - he pulled me out of my cell, gave me a rotary phone to call my parents with and smiled at me the way your grandpa would - that was my first interaction with Father Boyle and Homeboy Industries • Today (Thursday September 24th) we launch our collaboration project with @homeboyindustries / a portion of the proceeds will go to HBI - Homeboy is the largest and most successful gang intervention program in the world • we drop today at Noon pst on www.Bornxraised.com (at Eastlake Juvenile Detention Center) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFhwPTNjwC2/?igshid=ohryxvxolk5d

Last year when we shot our first project with the Dodgers we had the pleasure of shooting @jsejse and his father Ernesto for the campaign - if you’ve been around us at all you know how important family and community is to us. Last week Jse lost his father to a heart attack • Jse has been with us since the very beginning, since BxR was just an idea - when we shot this Dodger project with @estevanoriol you could see how proud Ernesto was of all of us - you could see it in his eyes. Ok it’s Spanto story time - This is my friend Juan Catalan, at 7am on August 12th 2003 he was arrested and wrongfully accused of murder. I was at home watching TV one evening and I came across this special called “Long Shot” on Netflix • the film broke me down into tears, having been in a very similar situation a few times in my life his story resonated with me on a whole different level - I felt immediately connected to him • I won’t ruin the story for you, but the only thing that saved him from serving life in prison was being at Dodger Stadium with his daughter • I found him on Instagram and sent him a DM, I wanted to shoot him and his daughter for this Dodger project. We met last week and shot at angels point behind the stadium, he even wore the jersey he had on at that game. He told me he hadn’t worn it since that day. Growing up in LA during the 90’s had its perks and was very aesthetically pleasing but it also came with a lot of hardship. I feel very honored to have been able to shoot Juan and his daughter and to call them my friends. Washington (west Washington was what abbot Kinney was called before all the fuckery) - photographs of Venice CA in the 70’s and 80’s • I wish I could take you all back to this era with me • it was a different world back then.
