“Each role we embody is just as you said a "caricature”. Our purpose in this video was to depict the extreme stereotypes and images thrown on our people that may not necessarily be our own. The two characters are not a representation of being “sleep” because of how they dress and/or act. Rather we are playing with common themes we see in popular culture that often manipulate the way Black people are viewed and consequently the way we see ourselves. How they look and act versus any of the other characters isn’t what makes them not woke or woke, but its a comment on one of the few identities the media and American standards repeat in order to tell us who and how we can be. This is why we also included the minstrel characters, The Angry Black Woman, The Suspicious Black Boy, etc. These are repeated identities thrown on the people of color everyday. This video is a story of these two girls liberating themselves from the stereotypes they are told they must be. We’re not saying that everyone who with that type of “lit” style isn’t woke. Really we are alluding to the archetype of a VH1-esque reality show, argumentative, ignorant Black girl that is so often portrayed in the media and how it effects the way we look at ourselves. We hope this reply brought your concerns to light. We appreciate you opening up the floor to discussion!! — MUCH LOVE!! OSHUN"
