BTW if anyone has any fic prompts/suggestions for Namor x Shuri they'd like filled please hit me up ❤️‍🔥

It would be awesome to have one that’s set after the events of WF, perhaps a few years later where M’Baku is the new king and Shuri remains as head of Wakanda’s R&D team. Global forces, including the US are being ever more brazen with their attempts to infiltrate Wakanda to steal their vibranium. It goes from bad to worse and M’baku is gathering the Tribal Council together to strategize their next move to fend off multiple powerful enemies suddenly working against them together.

Shuri doesn’t want to but realizes she has no choice but to turn back to the one person and nation that would understand Wakanda’s current plight, just as Namor predicted at the end of WF. Shuri, with her latest tech (and perhaps, some residual underwater abilities she managed to absorb from Namor’s mother’s bracelet) descends into the depths of the ocean to find Talocan. And when she does meet him again, he greets her with a pleasant and (barely there) surprised smile that turns into a smug grin in the blink of an eye.

“Ah…ts'o'ok u yúuchul jump'éel k'iin. Welcome back, Princess.”

So no one thinks that Gordon’s being “Put in his place” or something, this is from Gordon’s show where he specifically goes to places around the world to be schooled in how they do their cuisine and un-fuck the British (Imperialist but we can’t admit that on TV, but he does hint STRONGLY at it in some episodes) way of cooking “exotic” dishes by learning from the people who do it best.

That’s the world’s most successful chef putting himself in a position to learn from chefs around the world in world-class restaurants, grandmother’s houses, in a cramped make-shift kitchen on a rocking and speeding steam train, and more. He doesn’t shy away from learning from people who’ve never been in the remote vicinity of a culinary arts school or run a “professional” kitchen.

And here he’s showing a chef what he thinks of as Pad Thai and if you don’t think one of the most talented chefs on earth didn’t know he was specifically setting himself up to fail to make a point to his audience, then hopefully you do now! <3

the context- he wasnt saying ‘heres my world famous pad tai for you to sample, a recipe i hold more dear then my own mother’ its closer to  ‘here, this is how i was taught to cook pad tai in liverpool by a man named charles, how far off am i?’

I also think the precise criticism is interesting. The other chef doesn’t say it’s bad. He definitely doesn’t say it’s trash. He doesn’t say it’s a bad meal. What he says is that it’s not pad thai. It’s been labelled as a specific thing and it doesn’t resemble that thing to someone from that culture.

Just another reason I love Gordon ramsay

I want to use this post to clear something up. When I talk about toxic masculinity it always causes a big backlash, and I’ve noticed it’s mainly because men don’t know what it means. When I say I hate toxic masculinity, I do not mean that I hate that you’re a man or that I hate masculinity.

Toxic masculinity is THIS. Toxic masculinity is when men reinforce the idea that men should suppress and ignore softer displays of emotions that are associated with women. Toxic masculinity is reinforcing the fear of physical affection between men because it makes them appear too feminine or even ‘homosexual’.

It has to stop. Let men cry. Let men hold each other. Stop perceiving things that are ‘feminine’ as weak because outing your emotions is not weakness, it’s strength.

It's a fantastic point, but John Boyega's net worth also puts him at $6 million. When he says eat the rich, he isn't safe either...

There’s a pretty big fucking difference between six million and one trillion lmao

Not to mention the way the money was made

An actor being paid for a role / doing some advertising is a world away form a man setting up a cooperate money machine that horrendously exploits workers

This is something I hate SO MUCH about how tumblr talks about money.

Like, I get that famous actors have large amounts of money, some of them are even probably overpaid (I have complicated thoughts about how actors are paid because of the nature of acting as a career), but they are exchanging labor for money, and their salaries are an expense involved in making a movie.

But like... an actor is paid for a job. They’re a worker like the rest of us. Bezos isn’t paid for a job, he’s paid for being the person who owns Amazon and despite being obscenely wealthy, he does all sorts of shitty things and to underpay and exploit his workers, and avoid paying taxes, so that more of the money Amazon generates will be profit (worker’s salaries are not profit, they’re a business expense).

These two mechanisms of acquiring money are fundamentally very different.

The reason why billionaires are evil aren’t because having money is bad, its because to get a billion dollars you have to cheat. You have to take it from someone else. If Bezos paid all his workers and suppliers fairly and treated them well, and paid his fair amount of taxes, and etc, then it literally wouldn’t matter how much money he earned, because he wouldn’t be doing anyone any harm. But its not actually possible to amass a billion dollars (a full order of magnitude bigger than a million) while behaving in an ethical manner.

Lmao did I seriously get called a bootlicker for holding the terrible oppressive opinion of “authors deserve to be paid for their work”? You’re not a radical for distributing other people’s creative work for free you’re just a dick.

Fucking wild how many of these people seem to believe both that books are so vital that it’s necessary they’re immediately available to everyone at no cost, and also that authors are bougie scum who contribute nothing to society, have nothing of worth to say, don’t deserve to be paid or not have their job security undermined, and should find another job… and they see no contradiction in this. Absolutely amazing.

Also, as I have said a million kajillion times? People who work in publishing deserve to eat too. Not just authors. Although authors also deserve this! Publishing isn’t the music industry. Editors spend many, many hours working on those books you like so that they’re readable. (Sometimes you can tell when an author has got too famous and they clearly have stopped listening to their editors. You can see the quality of the books decline.) Illustrators drew that map of the book’s fantasyland at the front; illustrators drew that double-page spread of a mediaeval town with the hundreds of people walking around. Photographers took the colour photos in the glossy insert. Permissions staff called around and cajoled that Scandinavian museum to secure the right to print that photo of that Viking ship. Typesetters and graphic designers made the interior readable, and made the eye catching cover. Heck, editors made sure that each paragraph of text was tagged correctly so that the book could be turned into an ebook, and checked it once it was done to make sure it hadn’t all gone weird in the conversion. If it’s a nonfiction book, there’s even a chance that the publisher sought out an author or author team to write the book, not the other way around – especially for textbooks.

There is an extraordinary amount of work that goes into publishing a book. Authors spend a horrific amount of time on each one, and so do staff at publishing houses. Almost none of us get paid particularly well. In my first job as an editor, I was alarmed to discover that I could get a 10k raise by quitting and going to work as a receptionist. I’ve been a receptionist before. It didn’t require me to work overtime, or to have a university qualification. I’ve played Solitaire on the computer as a receptionist. Being an editor had me regularly stay late at the office.

The thing about ‘x book has sold so well! All the money should go to the author’ is that it shows you don’t understand how publishing works. Most books don’t make very much for the publisher. Some don’t cover the cost of production. The reason why publishers can keep producing books, and can publish interesting or risky books, is those rare success stories. In Australia, our local publisher Allen & Unwin had the distribution rights for Harry Potter, which they did not produce. But the money they got for distributing the series bankrolled books by Australian authors. It meant they could publish Garth Nix’s children books, a beautiful coffee table book on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, or the Phryne Fisher series.

Pirating books won’t hurt the few executives who make money at publishing. But it will hurt authors – most of whom don’t make enough from writing to classify their work as anything other than a hobby – and it hurts people like me, who make authors works look good.

Pirating books shuts down small publishers, or otherwise they get bought out by the same big publishers you rail against. Ours is not an industry with a large safety net. We really, I don’t know how to get this across to you, do not make much money. The reason why Hachette is large and makes a lot of money is because Hachette is an umbrella publisher that has something like sixty smaller publishers under it. I can’t remember the exact number from when I worked there, and it’s likely changed since, anyway. If you don’t want the five big publishers owning everything, you need to support the smaller publishers. Which means buying their books, or at the very least not pirating them.

Most people who work in publishing do it because we really love books. We’re really not in it to make money. Which is good, because people who work in publishing are really poorly paid. I have met more than a few who leave after five or ten years, who go to work in the government, or at universities, or in marketing, because the poor pay and the stress has finally got to them.

And you know what? If capitalism ceased to exist tomorrow, I’d be delighted to spend my days making books for no renumeration. I love books. I love editing! But that’s not the world we live in, and I don’t want to see my tiny industry basically cease to exist. I’ve already seen the number of jobs in publishing shrink and shrink in my country. I’ve seen publishers disappear and get swallowed up by others.

Authors and publishing staff are not the enemy. Why the fuck shouldn’t they get paid for their fucking labour.

Hi! It’s me, your friendly neighborhood professional copy editor!

I haven’t been paid in three months thanks to corona. I don’t get paid much when I do get paid. And if you pirate this biography of Charles de Gaulle that I am devoting my weekend to, I won’t get paid at all.

Books do not fly straight from the author’s head to your hands.

If you can afford it, buy your books. (And if you’re in the U.S., buy them from Bookshop.org because fuck Amazon.)

If you can’t afford to buy books, GO TO YOUR LIBRARY! THAT IS HOW YOU GET BOOKS FOR FREE! A librarian can help you get any book you want! And the library pays for the books! Publishers get money to pay their employees and you get the book for free! The library gets a boost in circulation numbers, which helps them convince the state government to please, please give them some of the tiny percentage of tax dollars that are still used to better the community.

You say you love books?

SUPPORT SMALL PUBLISHERS. SUPPORT SMALL BOOKSTORES. SUPPORT LIBRARIES.

I’ve realized I don’t like animated “anthro animal” movies when there’s 1. No point of them being animals or 2. Them being animals isn’t taken advantage of world building and design wise.

Real talk tho, my biggest gripe with SING is the fact that having all the characters be anthro animals was kinda unnecessary. If anything, I think people would be able to relate to and enjoy the characters more if they were actual humans. Cos that’s the thing, them being animals in the movie is seriously… Wasted I guess? They all move and act like humans, there was no interesting factors to be brought in by them being animals.

And I know what you’re thinking: Oh, well that’s the point of anthro animals, they’re supposed to move and act like humans.

Which I understand! But, there should still be some creative liberties you when making characters (who could have easily been humans) as animals.

For example:

Aside from a few nods to their “ original animal behavior”, everyone really does just behave like human people, and as previously stated, I feel a better connection could have been made with these characters if you made them humans; them being animals feels almost gimmicky in this movie.

But with Kung Fu Panda on the other hand:

It almost ALWAYS takes into account that these characters are animals, which adds so much charm to them and really opens up a lot of creative opportunities for world building and character interactions.

Like, this is a super obvious/minor addition in the animation, but I always loved how they have Monkey walk on his knuckles

It would have been super easy to just have him walk on both feet, with practically little to no complaints I think.

Anyways, I didn’t think that far ahead so I have no way to wrap this up, thank you for coming to my TED talk and remember to wash your hands.

me as a reader: hell yes give me all the fics about this one scenario. The more the merrier

This one is so hard to accept. Reblogging to knock that into my brain.

Me as a writer: I feel like I’m repeating myself, I’ve already used that theme, I’ve already written that kink, that other character uses that speech pattern so this one in another fandom can’t, I feel like I’m writing predictable things, is this different enough from that other thing I wrote, are people filling out bingo cards by my work? :sobbing:

Me as a reader: oh hell yeah this hit the spot exactly, I hope this writer has written 20 more just like it

Its been NINE YEARS and i still dont think anyone knows exactly why teen titans was cancelled

Same reason Young Justice and Green Lantern The Animated Series were canceled: Girls liked it. Bruce Timm finally up an’ said it out loud in an interview a while back when he was asked why in the hell GL:TAS had been canceled when it was doing so well on every front; DC’s animation department has institutionally decided that feee-males don’t/can’t/shouldn’t like superheroes, so even if a show is drawing in great viewership numbers and has great toy sales, once they find out that it’s popular with women and girls, they pull the plug on it. Cartoon Network loved Teen Titans— two million viewers for new episodes will do that— and wanted a Season Six, and the production staff was already in the planning stages for it; they were going to have a big arc about Terra and why she was Living Normal, and do a lot more with the extended Titans team members.

This is so fucked up.

To elaborate on this point a bit, the reason this happens is that modern television merchandising aims for total market segregation.

In a nutshell, it’s much more efficient to sell things to people if you can divide them up into tightly defined subcategories that have no interests in common; that way, you never risk accidentally competing with yourself.

This is why children’s toys (and toy sales channels) are actually much more strongly gendered these days than they were forty, thirty, even twenty years ago: one of the basic market segregation splits they’ve decided to use is “boys versus girls”.

Ever wonder why you see Avengers t-shirts that leave Black Widow out of the group shot, or Guardians of the Galaxy action figure lines with no Gamora? That’s market segregation in action.

The upshot is that shows with crossover appeal can actually be cancelled for being too popular with girls; they’re viewed as “stealing” the female market from the specifically girl-targeted media that rightfully “owns” it.

This is the sort of thing folks are talking about when they say gender roles are socially constructed, by the way. The gender split in media merchandising? It’s not just artificial, it’s deliberately imposed as a top-down marketing strategy. When folks try to justify it by saying “this is the ways it’s always been” or “this is just what the market wants”, they’re lying through their teeth - this is, in fact, the merchandisers dictating to the market what it wants in order to sell stuff more efficiently.

(Interestingly, the reverse isn’t always true: if a specifically girl-targeted show unexpectedly becomes popular with boys, sometimes rather than being cancelled, its merchandising will shift to court the male collector’s market. TV execs are so sexist, even their sexism is sexist.)

It gets worse.

Paul Dini, a writer/producer said this on a podcast: “ That’s the thing, you know I hate being Mr. Sour Grapes here, but I’ll just lay it on the line: that’s the thing that got us cancelled on Tower Prep, honest-to-God was, it’s like, ‘we need boys, but we need girls right there, right one step behind the boys’—this is the network talking—’one step behind the boys, not as smart as the boys, not as interesting as boys, but right there.’”

Cartoon network and Warner brothers deliberately made the conscious decision to dumb down their female characters because they want to push female viewers away. In fact, Tower Prep was cancelled because it had too many female viewers because the writers made too many well written female characters.

So shitty representation of girls isn’t something that just happens. It’s the result of deliberate planning just so the execs can make more money.

And it’s not just cartoon network. I mean, why do you think Nick fucked over Korra so badly? Remember them telling Bryke they didn’t want a female Avatar? Why do you think there are no Korra figurines or action figures?
