CAN I HAVE THESE SCENES NOW
Tim + his lil “I can’t believe I got this lucky” smile 🥹
They don’t actually wind up back at Lucy’s apartment after their sushi date.
They almost do. Tim is just maneuvering his truck into the parking lot when his phone rings, a frantic Genny on the other end of the line, so he heads off to help his sister while Lucy makes her way upstairs alone, nothing but her thoughts to keep her company.
One specific train of thought, really.
The interviewer’s words earlier today – okay so a place of honesty, respect, love? – are playing on a loop in her mind and, try as she might, she can’t seem to stop her brain from weaving a tangled web of confusion and frustration. She’s not frustrated with the interviewer, necessarily, though she certainly didn’t enjoy the part where he questioned the strength and security of their relationship on camera, or that he put them on the spot with his use of a word they haven’t actually said to each other yet.
Okay, so maybe she is a little frustrated with him.
But mostly, she’s frustrated with herself over the fact that she and Tim have been dating for three and a half months now and she still hasn’t managed to be completely honest with him about her feelings.
Lucy is well aware that makes her a hypocrite, given her admission on camera that honesty in a relationship is extremely important to her. But it’s not like she doesn’t want to be honest with Tim. She desperately does. The words have been caught in her throat for weeks at this point, maybe longer, but every time she thinks about setting them free, she loses her nerve.
She’s just… she’s never said the words to anyone, because they’ve never actually been true.
Casual confirmation.
Chenford + Lucy thinks Tim is dead
"I just found a body. It's Sargent Tim Bradford."
Lucy was glad she wasn't driving the shop right now, because if she was, she 100% would have crashed into something as she heard Aarons voice come over the radio.
Instantly, her entire body went numb, her heart physically stopping in her chest as the words 'body,' and 'Tim Bradford,' washed over her. Her vision grew hazy, Lucy sinking to the floor as all the air was forcefully squeezed out of her lungs.
The radio was making more noise now, but Lucy couldn't make sense of it due to the high-pitched whining in her ears. On autopilot, Lucy grabbed her phone, hitting the first name on her recently called list while a million thoughts flew through her head.
Aaron must be mistaken, he can't be dead. I can't lose him- I just got him! I haven't even told him I love him yet. This can't be happening; please don't be happening, oh god.
I can't go through this again; not without him.
Her hands shaking, Lucy lifted the phone to her ear, her heart pounding faster and faster at every ring. Pick up pick up pick up.
Just when it feels like she's going to black out from panic, the phone does in fact pick up.
"Hey," Tim's voice says, and Lucy instantly feels tears running down her cheeks from relief.
"Tim," she chokes out, trying in vain to get her breathing under control.
"I'm okay," he says immediately. "I don't know what planet Aaron thinks he's on, but I am most definitely not in a dumpster. I'm fine, Luce, I promise."
"Okay," she says, holding her hand against her heart in an effort to slow its racing.
"Where are you, are you okay?"
"I am now," she answers honestly, finally feeling like she can breathe again. "Are you at the station?"
"Yeah."
"I'll be there in 10 minutes." Hanging up the phone, Lucy picks herself up off the floor, ignoring the concerned looks from the patrons of the store as she books it to her shop.
Chenford + you matter more (Post 5.12)
She falls back on her pillow, breathless and feeling as light as a feather. She tries to remember the last time she's felt this perfect after sex and her thoughts turn empty.
Tim rolls on top of her again, placing both his arms at either side of her head and leaning in to take her lips in yet another kiss. For a moment all she can hear is the deep breath she takes and their lips smacking, all she can feel is her chest arching into his.
He pulls back only a few inches and looks into her eyes. She places her palm softly on his cheek and he leans into it, leaving a soft kiss on her wrist. She stares at him, not remembering ever being loved like that. Ever loving someone like that.
His other hand slides down her thigh and she can't believe she wants more already. She arches her knee at his touch and hears a low sound deep in his throat.
Tell me you love me (without any words)
“Lucy.”
“Hmm,” she hums as she raises her glass to take a sip of wine, still engrossed in the stack of Metro information and training materials. It sounds challenging, the combination of advanced tactical skills, complex decision-making, and high-pressure situations, but there’s no doubt in her mind that Tim is going to excel at it. And he’d tried to suppress it and remain professional, but she hadn’t missed the flash of excitement in his eyes when Grey informed him of the opening.
“I know it was you.”
She blinks and finally tears her eyes away from the pamphlet on SWAT training to meet his eyes. “What?”
“The sudden retirements and personnel shifts to open a position in Metro,” Tim clarifies. He doesn’t sound mad – quite the opposite, actually – but the soft tone of his voice and the intensity in his gaze reveals the seriousness of the conversation he’s wanting to initiate. “I know it was you.”
“I had a lot of help,” Lucy deflects, ignoring Tim’s murmured ‘mmhmm’ to continue speaking. “We were all working on it when you showed up at Nolan’s last night.”
He pauses, tilts his head. “Is that why he kept stalling me at the door?”
She sets aside her wine and retrieves her phone from the coffee table, opens the photos app before passing it to him with an almost bashful expression.
Tim takes the device and she watches his eyes narrow as he makes sense of what he’s seeing. “You murder boarded me a new job?”
“Hey, it was complicated,” she defends. “A lot of people had to move positions.”
“Lucy,” he huffs.
“What?” She tries to keep the defensive edge out of her voice as he hands back her phone, but she’s not entirely sure she’s succeeding. He’s not upset with her. She knows him well enough to recognize it for what it is; he’s overwhelmed and having trouble putting his feelings into words, and they’re spilling over as exasperation instead.
Tim seems to recognize this as well and takes a deep breath, takes a moment to rein himself in, and when he speaks again his earlier softness is back. “You didn’t have to do all of this.”
“I know,” Lucy answers. “But you’d do the same for me.”
He would, but that’s not the point.
congrats, boot!
“Lucy?”
There’s a puzzled expression that paints itself over his features, forehead crinkling as he picks up the small pair of black booties and dangles them in front of him. He’s seen them one too many times before and while his innate instinct is to smile at the memories they hold, his lips curve downward in confusion. Did he miss something?
He’s sure he hasn’t. Both are doing well in their careers; Tim as lieutenant of Metro, Lucy as detective. Neither of them have brought up the conversation of a change. He’s still in his first year of a new rank, “the boot in charge” as Lucy affectionately described it and she’s in her fourth year as a detective, guiding Aaron through his first year. So why the boots?
He looks down at the bed that’s covered in different sets of baby booties. Unlike the other times where she’s written out ‘congrats, book!’ on a blank piece of paper in Sharpie, this time is different. There’s a pale yellow card in the middle of it all, his name written in cursive in what Tim can only assume is from her ‘special pens’ which are really just a set of Gelly Roll Stardust pens he got her for Christmas because she once told him how much she loved using glitter pens in grade school.
This time, he does smile as he sets down the pair of booties and leans to reach the card. His eyes scanning the front for a moment, still quite unsure what to expect. There are tiny stars that surround his name in gold and silver and he can almost picture her leaning against the kitchen island, brows furrowed in concentration as she focused on drawing the perfect little stars without smudging the fresh ink.
He pulls at the flap to open it before pulling the card out of the envelope. It takes him a second, more than a second, as he blinks completely dumbfounded at the greeting card in between his hands.
HAPPY NEW BABY!
Soft pastels fill the cover with different painted baby items: a teddy bear, bassinet, baby blocks, pacifier, rattle, bib, baby boots, baby mobile, bottle, diaper. It’s a baby card. He knows what it means but at the same time he’s in complete and utter shock because could it be? He wants to call out her name, almost too afraid to open the card to see what it holds but his breath is hitched in his chest and he can’t quite bring himself to speak her name.
So he stands there for a moment, maybe hours though time definitely feels like it’s standing still, just staring at the card because he knows what this means despite not knowing for sure. He can picture it now. Her growing belly, the endless list of baby books that they’ll get through, telling their friends and family, laughing over baby names — the entire journey until their tiny little human finally arrives. Tears well in his eyes as he’s overcome by emotion: excitement, awe, shock, fear, love.
“You really should read it.”
The smile on Tim’s face immediately drops as he turns to face Lucy who’s leaning against the doorframe with a smirk on her lips. There’s a sudden panic that washes over him as he wonders if he suddenly got it all terribly wrong but the expression behind her eyes doesn’t indicate that, she’s just teasing him. He nods, unable to do much else as he finally opens the card to find a: Congrats, Boot!
He laughs because of course that’s what she’d write. He lowers the card to find her standing in front of him holding up a pregnancy test with a grin that reaches her sparkling brown eyes. His gaze falls onto the two pink lines and Tim can’t help but laugh in amazement.
“We’re having a baby!”
Lucy’s giggle fills the room and it’s the sweetest noise Tim’s ever heard. This is everything he’s ever wanted, something he thought he’d never had. Except, here she stands, this absolute ray of sunshine that came into his life to make it better day by day, making every single one of his dreams come true.
“We’re having a baby!” he echoes as his hands find her waist pulling her in toward him. They’re beaming at each other as they hold the other, swaying softly as their foreheads touch. There’s a magnetic pull that draws them even closer as their lips finally meet. She smile’s against him before finally pulling away.
“So? What do you think of your new role, boot?”
“Best job yet.”
