So Luke has at least read Ella's fanfiction, does that mean that he is also a superfan or does he just read because he likes Ella? Or does he like to be in the know about what's going on in the fandom?

Avatar

Our writers room headcanon was that Luke’s eventual goal wasn’t to become a writer or creator like Ella or Marina, but to become an executive and eventually, the head of a TV network or studio.

So he would consider it good research / part of his job to be in the know about what’s going on within the show’s fandom generally, but he doesn’t come from a fandom background and he doesn’t see it through the same positive lens that Ella does. For Ella, fandom is a magical thing. For Luke, it’s a useful tool for marketing.

Luke is very utilitarian in his approach to his work / life in general - we imagined he’s a great assistant, but hard to get close to so not too many people would consider him to be a good friend.

As far as why he reads Ella’s fanfic specifically - I think at first it’s out of trollish curiosity, because she’s so different from him and frankly, annoying, and this is one way to annoy her back. Then, idk, I think he secretly enjoys reading it for a number of reasons.

ooh I’m sorry to spam you but the feels are intense! Pls pls tell me, regardless of what happens and Ella’s personal complicated feelings, DO YOU SHIP LUKELLA? & do you love Luke? Bc I’m very much a Luke stan (1)

Avatar

Hard question for me to answer! I definitely want PEOPLE to ship Luke/Ella, just as I want people to ship Tim/Ella. My personal ship preferences flip flop depending on when I’m watching it, but these characters are so lifted from the fabric of my personal experiences that it’s hard to disentangle fact from fiction.

In the past, I’ve stayed away from love triangles in my storytelling - mostly because they hurt me and I don’t like getting hurt by fiction, haha. In both the short film and in S1 of I Ship It, there was really only ever one serious contender in the love interest department. Though you might argue S1 was more of a deconstruction of a love story than an actual love story, while the short film was more like a prelude to a possibility.

Going into S2, I wanted to try something I hadn’t done before - an actual love triangle that could potentially split our audience. So we put a lot of energy into developing both Tim and Luke as viable love interests for Ella. If you’re a Luke stan, I’ll consider our job only half-way successful until someone comes out as vehemently Team Tim!

Summary: Time is running out.

Disclaimer: Marina Hunter owns the magical world of Superstition. I own the spaces inbetween.

Yulin’s Note: Following my own long-standing tradition of writing fanfic for my own universes before anyone else does, here is Ella’s Superstition fanfic (as seen in this season of I Ship It)! It’s a fluff/angst, 4 times+1, slightly AU one-shot, centering around her OTP Therese/Saxon (obvs.)

Feel free to give it a read and a kudos, if you enjoy it! Friendly reminder - today is the last day to stream the new season of I SHIP IT for free on CW Seed!

any thoughts/questions about the new season of I SHIP IT?

Friendly reminder - you can stream the new season of I SHIP IT until midnight on Wednesday 4/24 (and possibly for a few hours after it, depending on what time zone you’re living in.) I’ll also be watching/livetweeting the last 3 episodes tonight at 6pm PT.

**Note: If you happen to live abroad, CW Seed only broadcasts domestically in the US - but you are welcome to try using a VPN (like Windscribe) to watch, which is what I do when I’m trying to catch up on my TV while overseas!

Much love,

Oh hello there! Please allow me to make a pitch for you to watch this show about a fangirl named Ella:

who writes a lot of fanfiction for her favorite TV show, Superstition:

but mostly about her OTP, Therese and Saxon:

Ella gets a job working as a writers PA on her favorite show:

She gets into a lot of arguments with the showrunners assistant Luke who does not share her fandom background:

She also has a very supportive boyfriend she’s moving in with named Tim:

This show is all about fangirl fantasies colliding with the reality of the work that goes into creating these fictional universes:

Did we mention it’s a musical?

Anyway you should watch the new season before it disappears on Wednesday 4/24! It will be available to stream for free on the CW Seed for 3 more days and then it’ll be gone! (Until it makes its way to the CW broadcast later this summer!)

Watch it here on the CW Seed!

SEASON 2 IS AMAZING, it is everything of my dreams, literally I want to be in Ella’s position!! I am very very Team Luke #lukella , I adore him and their chemistry and I love that he calls her “Shipperella”! Are we getting a season 3, and will it be set in this same world, or the S1 world? Also, is there hope for us Lukella shippers?

Avatar

Aww, so glad you watched and enjoyed and shipped!

No word yet on S3! But given the option, I would love to explore more of Ella (and Luke) in this universe as she gets even more deeply entrenched in this world, and moves further in her journey from fanfiction writer/fangirl to creator in her own right.

Behold, a BTS featurette of Season 2 of I SHIP IT! In which we discuss Ella, Tim, Sasha, and glimpse some of our new characters this season (Winnie! Superstition!! Luke!!!).

This season is about a fangirl who gets a job working on her favorite TV show, and it’s a total series reboot - meaning you don’t have to have watched Season 1 for context. It’s my personal favorite iteration of this story yet - exploring Ella’s journey from fangirl to creator.

Reminder - you have only 11 more days to stream the new season of I SHIP IT on CW Seed, ahead of our launch on The CW broadcast later this summer.

Have you watched the new season? I would love to hear your thoughts! Still to come: a glimpse of Ella’s Superstition fanfic.

Much love,

Lights, Camera, Fanfiction! The new season of I SHIP IT is available TODAY to stream for free on The CW Seed app for two weeks only! Catch this series sneak preview before our show makes its way to broadcast on the The CW later this summer.

I’ve been living with this story for so long now, and it’s finally time for the audiences we made it for to see it. If you’ve ever read or written fanfiction, tracked a series tag on tumblr, or made a gif set - we made this for you.

This season is my love letter to fandom and it’s the most personal iteration of I SHIP IT yet: the origin story of how a fangirl becomes a creator. I hope you watch - and let me know your thoughts!

Much love,

Season 2 will be a total series reboot in an alternate universe, telling the story of Ella, Tim, and friends on a whole new musical fandom adventure. Every iteration of I SHIP IT so far - the short film, digital series, and now TV (!!) show - has seen a different spin on the world of fandom. But at its heart - this show has always been a fangirl fantasy.

The story I wanted to tell this season is the most personal one yet - Ella is a fanfiction writer who aspires to work on her favorite TV show, “Superstition”. We made this season with a specific audience in mind - my fanfiction-writing teenage self and fangirls who want to take over Hollywood someday.

If you’re either one of those - a fangirl or a time-traveling teenage Yulin - you make up the audience that I most want to find our show and your opinions are the ones I’ll take the most to heart. My request - when our show comes out, please consider watching it and giving it a chance. If you like it, please be vocal about it online and in your fan communities.

I want to show The CW that they were right to take a chance on this story (and on me) - that fangirls can be more than a marketing demo, that we have our own stories to tell too. I hope I get to watch yours next.

Christmas Dumplings | 2018 | LOVE, DAILY

A pair of teens find themselves stuck spending Christmas Eve together while making deliveries for a Chinese restaurant. The December episode of LOVE, DAILY - a romance anthology series for @go90. Watch here.

starring Brianne Tju and Alexis G. Zall written & directed by Yulin Kuang

I had so much fun writing/directing this episode of the coming-of-age romance anthology series LOVE, DAILY for Go90 and AwesomenessTV! I tend to work with the same pool of actors across many of my projects - you find people you click with as a director and the job becomes just a little bit easier as you develop a shared language.

I hadn’t ever worked with Brianne or Alexis going into this project, and it was a fantastic reminder to me that it’s fun and important to exercise that muscle as a director too - finding fresh ways to communicate with new actors, developing that common language and rapport quickly on a rapid shooting schedule. Brianne and Alexis are such thoughtful, intelligent actors - I loved crafting these characters with them.

Hope you enjoy, and would love to hear your thoughts!

Much love,

Yulin Kuang

Ella and Tim! During S1 of I SHIP IT, I wanted to explore the beginning of a love story between two best friends (much as I did in the short film), and did some deconstruction of the friends-to-lovers trope.

Between the release of S1 and the development of S2, I realized something - I don’t like deconstructing love stories, I like love stories, period. And so our mission in the S2 writers room was to embrace the romance unapologetically. It changed our approach to Ella and Tim’s story, and that’s about all I can say without diving headfirst into spoilers.

I love this for so many reasons!

This scene contains the core DNA that has always been a part of this project, in every iteration - this is a story about a fangirl and her feelings.

S2 of I SHIP IT will be a departure from S1 - which sounds ominous we’re taking a swing at a bigger, more ambitious storyline this season and I’m hopeful that our viewers will be onboard with the twisty-turny things we’re trying. It’s a bit of an AU, which made my fanfiction writer brain light up with possibilities. More to come on that soon, hopefully.

She’s Got Drive | ad

I’m usually comfortably behind the camera, so not gonna lie, I am fully terrified and introverting throughout all 2 minutes and 12 seconds of this video. But when the Geena Davis Institute and Ford asked me to be a part of their campaign to promote the stories of female content creators and the importance of representation/visibility, I knew I had to say yes.

This is my story of getting started as a filmmaker.

It was actually a ton of fun, seeing production from the other side of the camera lens! Check out the behind-the-scenes here.

Maggie and Milly and Molly and May | I Didn’t Write This

written by e.e. cummings directed by Yulin Kuang

About two years ago, I read a poem in @taylorswift‘s Instagram captions:

I fell in love with the poem and came up with a concept for this video almost immediately. For those inclined, I highly recommend reading up on e.e. cummings himself - I wrote a 12-page paper on him way back in sixth grade. It was riddled with typos and grammatical errors because I was too excited about the subject to check myself, which I like to think e.e. cummings would have forgiven in the spirit of his work (my sixth grade English teacher did not.) Cummings has some other brilliant poems, one of my particular faves is “May I Feel, Said He”, narrated here by Tom Hiddleston.

We shot this at Point Loma, CA in the summer of 2015 (around the same time we shot To His Coy Mistress). It’s been a bit cursed in post-production, as we’ve been juggling other projects for a while, but here it is at last! Washing out the last vestiges of 2016 to the sea.

Eloise at Christmastime | 2016 | a holiday greeting

adapted from Kay Thompson’s ELOISE AT THE PLAZA

directed by Yulin Kuang shot & edited by Zack Wallnau

starring my cat, Eloise

One of my personal holiday traditions is to watch ELOISE AT CHRISTMASTIME. It’s a shamefully underrated Christmas movie and more people should experience it. This video (in addition to being a Christmas card from me, Zack, and Eloise) is also a bit of a variation on an “I Didn’t Write This”, as it’s been adapted from the delightful Kay Thompson series, ELOISE AT THE PLAZA. I heartily recommend it, no matter what age you are.

Much love and happy holidays,
