What does Shadowheart do? At a loose end after leaving her cult.
What was it like when you first met Gale? He was kind of depressed because his ex dumped him after he accidentally got a bomb in his chest.
Does Minthara ever cook for you? She puts poison in my food so I can build up an immunity, so I won't die if we ever visit her hometown.
Meanwhile Wyll is there with his public service job and flawless table manners.

It's totally deserved that Neil Newbon gets praised for his perfomance as Astarion and for Stephen Rooney to be commended for how he wrote him. Amazing symbiosis between them for sure!
But we absolutely CANNOT forget about whoever designed him, because let's be honest... many people who get into Astarion get into him for his looks first. Then they later on find out about his backstory and watch some clips of him, and become hooked.
The artists and animators absolutely deserve all the love and praise as well.

I really love the personality descriptions on the character sheets that came with the digital deluxe edition of the game:

Hot day? He is laying on gravel one minute and then dumping his canteen on his head the next. Cold night? Companions are warm rocks to him. They take shifts.
