In Case No One Told You - Ladies Edition
An anon saw my originalĀ āIn Case No One Told You Growing Upā post and requested one dealing specifically with menstrual cycles/vaginal care/female anatomy. So here we go. :)
As before, feel free to reblog with additions of your own.
~~~~~
- During your period, black underwear is less likely to show stains. Red is also good (like Deadpool says, red so the bad guys donāt see you bleed).
- A properly inserted tampon is virtually unnoticeable to the wearer. If you feel it, you havenāt inserted it far enough. (The inner 2/3 of your vagina is insensitive to touch. You feel pressure there but not touch. This is why sex can feel good/bad but you wonāt feel the tampon.)
- Some women donāt feel pleasure from insertion of objects/penises into their vaginas. They may only feel pleasure from external stimuli. If that sounds like you, know that it is completely normal.
- Ignore what porn tells you. Donāt put anything sugary in your vagina. In fact, donāt put any food up there. Itās not good. Causes yeast infections.
- When using sex toys, make sure to clean them before and after use to clear off any bacteria/dust/etc. If you use a dirty dildo, you greatly increase your chances of infection.
- Never let anything that has been near or in your butt hole anywhere near or in your vagina. Because that will cause ā you guessed it ā yeast infections (or other such infections).
-A yeast infection is a fungal infection that causes irritation, discharge and intense itchiness of the vagina and the vulva (the tissues at the vaginal opening). Itās a type of vaginitis, or inflammation of the vagina. It is not the only infection you can get, but it is the most common.
- 3 out of 4 women will experience a yeast infection in their lifetime, many at least twice. So if you get one, it is not uncommon and does not mean you are dirty.
- Taking antibiotics can actually cause yeast infections because the medication affects the chemicals in your body. To avoid this (while taking meds and otherwise), eat yogurt. This is not a 100% proven method, but many women claim yogurt helps stave off infections or helps clear up ones they already have.
- Last one about yeast infections. If you get one, there are plenty of over the counter medications to combat it at any local pharmacy. Antifungal medications are available as creams, ointments, tablets and suppositories. Follow the instructions for your chosen method and you should be healthy again in no time. (If you have reoccurring infections, see a doctor for a treatment plan.)
- Donāt douche. Douching is a way of āirrigatingā the vagina and was once thought to be a good way of cleaning out bacteria. However, douching is associated with a number of health problems (cervical cancer,Ā pelvic inflammatory disease,Ā endometritis, and increased risk ofĀ sexually transmitted infections to name a few). Douching is also NOT an effective form of birth control. Just donāt do it. Choose a safe soap or just wash with water.
- On that note, you donāt need to wash up inside your vagina - just on the outside (and by that I mean the hair). Vaginas are smart, self-cleaning machines 90% of the time. Trust your vagina to do its business (if youāre not in some kind of pain, of course. If you are, see a doctor).
- After sex, try to pee. Peeing after sex pushes out any bacteria that may have been pushed up into your urethra during intercourse.
- Shaving your pelvic area is fine but not required. However, you should still trim the hair to keep the area clean and tidy. This is not a beauty thing. This is a bacterial thing. Keeping your bush clean and tidy will also decrease any natural odors.
- The No-Bra movement is gaining momentum and you can certainly be a part of it, but if you find going braless to be embarrassing or painful, you donāt have to do it. Certain clothing can rub your nipples and cause you pain, so it makes sense that youād want some smooth protection between your nips and your shirt.
- Bras can also make uneven breasts (aka asymmetrical breasts) appear more balanced, so it can be a confidence booster for many women.
- On that note, more than half of all women have asymmetrical breasts. One is bigger than the other or one hangs slightly lower or a number of various minor cosmetic differences. It is EXTREMELY common. Youāre fine.
- There is evidence to support that going braless causes premature sagging. HOWEVER, there is also evidence that wearing a bra causes this too. It all depends on muscle tone and the size of your breasts.
- Bra sizes are stupid. If you got measured in three different stores, chances are you would come out with three different sizes. Also, while you may be, say, a 36 C, a 34 D would probably fit snugly because while you lost two inches, you gained a cup size. Try on various sizes in various styles until you find something comfortable.
-Let me reiterate - donāt settle for a bra that makes you uncomfortable or hurts you. Tell the sales lady to shove it and take the one that you feel comfortable in.
- Menstrual cycles can vary from three to five days for the average woman. However, if you have just started getting your periods, they may be irregular. Thatās fine. As you age, irregular periods could be a sign of other health issues and should be brought up with your doctor, but in the beginning (the first year or so), irregularity is common.
- Not all women cramp. Some women experience menstrual cramps so intense that they canāt move or they throw up or the cry or all of the above. But some women actually do not feel any pain during their periods or they experience extremely little pain. Both are common.
- Methods to relieve period cramps vary from woman to woman, but some include drinking herbal tea, taking a safe pain medication (like ibuprofen or naproxen), taking supplements of fish oil, or curling up with a heating pad over the source of your pain.
- Save money. Store brands of pads and liners are just as good as the brand names and can generally be found in just as many options (long to short, overnight or light days. They all exist in most store brands.)
- Donāt use a tampon when not on your period. Just donāt. Youāre wasting the tampon and could hurt yourself.
- Some vaginal discharge on a daily basis is normal. Just change your underwear every day or switch out your liner regularly to avoid bacteria, odor, or other discomforts.
- Infertility is also common among women, and you should not feel like less of a person if you struggle with it. There are plenty of resources online and at your doctorās office to help you deal with fertility problems, if you so choose.
