Stiles smiled and nodded. “Yeah. Just wish they could’ve stuck around a little longer.” He said, slipping the photo back under his pillow. He looked up at Derek as he spoke, smiling softly. “I bet they like that. Able to still watch over this crazy town. Still be their town to protect.” He mused, laughing lightly when he talked about Cora, the steely, angry girl who used to be a little, cute sister.
“Yeah me too.” Derek could only feel worse because Stiles’ mom died of a disease and his mother died because he trusted the wrong person. He put his photo away and looked at Stiles. “Yeah, that’s why I buried them there.” He smiled back at Stiles as he laughed about Cora because Stiles only knew her as a female version of him. “Feel a little better?”

“I mean, it doesn’t mean anything, obviously. Just a job,” Stiles said quickly, hoping to reassure Derek. “It’s all fake anyway. You were just the…special exception.” He added with a grin.
“I know...” Just thinking about it kind of made him a little jealous. But it was his job and he had no right to tell him what he couldn’t do, of course only if it meant someone else. He smiled back at him. “Good. The lucky exception.”

“Oh the feeling back in your legs?” He asked, eyebrow raised. He smiled and pressed his cheek against Derek’s chest, falling silent for a bit. “Hey, Derek? Just asking, but…are you gonna be okay with, like, my job now? We’re a couple and stuff, so…”
Derek just laughed and wrapped his arms around him, content even though they were sweaty messes again. He had to think about that since it literally just occurred to him when Stiles spoke. “Oh um...yeah. Never really thought about it...” He kissed the top of his head and kept holding him.

Stiles smiled down at the picture. This was who he wanted to remember. Not the panicked, scared woman whose mind was breaking down before her and making her think her son was trying to kill her. He just wanted this. “I don’t really know how we got by without her, really. She kept this house together. She cooked, she cleaned, she didn’t everything, like a super mom.”
Stiles watched Derek, noticing the same fond sadness on his features that were on his own. “Me too.” He said., gripping the picture tightly. He took in a breath and cleared his throat. “Where are they buried? Do you go and visit your family’s grave at all?”
Derek held him and listened to him talk about his mom, making him smile. “We were lucky to have such great moms.” He said and took a deep breath, feeling the sadness run thought him. “They’re buried not far from the house. It’s a place at the cliff where you can see the whole town. We used to go there sometimes and camp, even though he lived less than a mile away. Cora would sneak back to the house during the night and Laura and I would pick on her while Mom would give us ‘that look’ where she didn’t have to say what she was thinking.”

Stiles smiled sadly and nodded. “I don’t want to forget her, you know? I don’t want the image of her sick and delusional in the hospital to replace how she was before. She was…amazing.” He said, swallowing thickly. “You would’ve liked her, I think. She was kinda like me. Hyper, excitable. But incredibly smart and understanding.”
He looked over as Derek as he pulled out the other picture, smiling at the happy family. “She looks a lot like you.” He said, looking at the stern yet kind looking woman. A real Alpha of her own pack
Derek listened and wrapped his arm around him, knowing the pain of losing a mother. “You won’t ever forget her. I wish I could have met her.” He said honestly, wishing he could have seen the Sheriff happy with her. He’d grown attached to them more than he wanted but that was okay.
He smiled as Stiles said that and nodded. “Yeah, everyone says I look a lot like her. She was kind, understanding but firm. She had to be since she was an Alpha. Everyone looked up to her and went to her for guidance, even other packs.” He thumbed away a tear and then put it back. “I think about her every day.”

Derek was glad when he turned around and nuzzled in his chest, kissing the top of his head. “Down right edible.” He said and then laughed. “In a minute. I gotta get the feeling back in my legs.

Stiles dived a hand under his pillow as Derek sat next to him, bringing out a faded picture of three people. Two were obvious. One was a younger, less aged Sheriff. The other was telltale by the shower of moles across his smiling toddler face. And holding the little babe was a warm looking young woman with black wavy hair and a bright smile.
“That’s her.” He said, showing the picture. “She didn’t look like that…you know, towards the end, but that’s how I like to remember her. Before she got sick, before she forgot things. When we were all just…normal.”
Derek looked at the picture and could tell how happy the Sheriff and his mother were just from the picture. It was amazing how small Stiles was and was about to ask before Stiles filled him in. “I understand. She’s beautiful. Do you look at this every night?”
He sat up a little and pulled out his wallet, pulling out his own picture. It was Peter, Cora, Laura, himself and his mother Talia posing. Derek was 17 in the picture and had his arms tight around his mother and smiling, while the others looked annoyed. It was taken a month or two before the fire. “I look at mine every night.”
