i genuinely think that katniss would have to be the first one to initiate everlark's relationship post-war. because, even when peeta did not have to deal with the instability the hijacking left him with, he was very shy at initiating any romantic action.

sure, he will sweet talk his way into katniss's heart (thg, 72). and make a lighthearted joke about her kissing him in the arena (thg, 257). or even admit his longtime crush on her on national television (thg, 132).

but in the end, he is all talk.

and it is actually katniss who is initiation any action. she is the one kissing his bruise (thg, 72). and the one leaning in to kiss him for their first kiss (thg, 260). and the one to follow up that kiss with many more kisses of her own (thg, 262).

it is only after katniss repeatedly initiates these romantic gestures, that peeta starts to gain the confidence he needs to do his own. all of the sudden, he is the one bring katniss into him to snuggle in the sleeping bag (thg, 291). he is the one swooping in to kiss her (thg, 298).

and even though this confidence is shaken after katniss reveals that it was for the camera, he still feels comfortable initiating some softer forms of physical touch. like climbing into her bed to comfort her until she falls asleep (cf, 112). or intertwining his hand with her as they walk into town (cf, 38). or embracing her (cf, 45).

but it isn't until they leave district twelve for the quell, that peeta little by little starts to feel more comfortable

because katniss is allowing herself to actually do what she has been trying to stop herself from wanting since the last games. she starts holding his hand everywhere (cf, 74). dragging him into her room (cf, 112). and accepting proposals to live in a state of carefree happiness forever (cf, 70).

and so he reciprocates. playing with her hair (cf, 70). caressing her (cf, 100). and even going as far as giving her a private, light kiss (cf, 75).

but this is still familiar to them. now, it is sacred because it is now real for them. but they have done these acts before.

so, any escalation in their relationship still has to be initiated by katniss. because peeta is too insecure and scared of another rejection to do it. and that is why katniss is the one to initiate the passionate kissing on the beach (cf, 100). and after a few times, peeta starts to reciprocate.

after the beach scene, it almost seems like everlark is ready to confirm their romantic relationship that has been brewing under the surface.

but the hijacking reverses everything. and all of the romantic confidence that peeta could have built over the course of the quell was crushed. he is convinced that katniss could never want him (and frankly, that he could never want her).

but katniss, once she finally feels comfortable, starts to initiate some of those same romantic gestures from before as she reaches out to smooth back peeta's hair, offering him the comfort that he needs to be able to go to sleep (mj, 258).

and so it only makes sense that after the war, peeta would need katniss to initiate the romance then too. because, after the war, he is still the shy boy who used to stare at her in the hallway at school (mj, 314). the one who never thought that katniss everdeen would even spare him a single thought.

so, he can plant the primroses (mj, 325). and bring her to bed when he thinks she won't remember it (mj, 328). and bring bread every morning (mj, 328). but that is it.

he is too timid to reach over and hold her hand as they stroll through the town. or rub her shoulders when she starts to get frustrated. or offer her a sweet kiss before parting.

but lucky for him, his precious songbird has been patiently waiting for him to come back to her (mj, 324). and she is brave enough to give her happiness another go.

Katniss is like Lucy Gray this, Katniss is like Sejanus that, and yes find that's all good and true and lovely but Katniss Everdeen is also a direct parallel to Coriolanus Snow and people NEED to start talking about this because it's driving me crazy.

Think about it: they both grew up poor and deeply vulnerable, losing parents at a very young age, with a matriarchal adult (Katniss' mother and Coriolanus' Grandma'am) who fails to provide for them emotionally and physically. They intimately understand the threat of starvation, even developing with stunted growth because of it, and their narrations in the books share a fixation on food. Throughout their childhoods, both experienced constant fear and suffered a fundamental lack of control over their circumstances. Because of this, they're inherently suspicious of the people around them. They resent feeling indebted to others, especially those who have saved their lives. They're motivated almost entirely by family and deeply connected to their communities. Both are used and manipulated by the Capitol, both are forced to perform to survive and despise every inch of it, both are thrown into the Arena and made to kill. Both have a self-sacrificial, genuinely sweet sister figure acting as their conscience. Peeta and Lucy Gray - performers and love interests with a fundamental kindness and sense of hope about them - fulfill markedly similar roles in their narrative. Both contribute to the development of the future Hunger Games, Snow throughout tbosas and Katniss towards the end of Mockingjay.

It's easy to ignore these similarities because, as mirrors of each other, they are exact opposites. Katniss is from District 12, viewed and treated as less than human; Snow is the cream of the Capitol crop, given the privilege of a name with social weight, an ancestral home, and the opportunity of the Academy despite having no more money than a miner from 12. Katniss has no agency over her life, and responds by being kind whenever she's able, while Snow justifies horrendous evils in order to continue his quest for complete control. Katniss does everything she can to protect her family; Snow does everything he can to protect his family's image as an extension of his own ego. Katniss loves her District and connects with its inhabitants on a meaningful level, but Snow is indifferent at best to his peers - the apparent "superior people" - and only engages with his community for personal gain. Katniss emerges from the Arena horrified at herself and the system, but Snow takes his trauma and turns it into an excuse to perpetuate the violence with himself at the top. Katniss cares for Prim until her death and then snaps at the loss of her little sister, while Snow survives on Tigris' blood, sweat, and tears and then torments and abandons her, presumably because she calls him out on his insanity. Snow actively adds to and popularizes the Hunger Games because of his vendetta against the Districts following his childhood wartime trauma - Katniss briefly agrees to a new Hunger Games in the pursuit of vengeance, but later stops them from happening by killing Coin and choosing a life of peace and privacy. Snow is obsessed with revenge, but Katniss empathizes with the Capitolites and does what she can to keep them from suffering. He exists in a cruel system and selfishly upholds it; she exists in a cruel system and works to dismantle it for the good of her family and community, at great personal cost. And Peeta and Lucy Gray are incredibly similar, but Katniss and Peeta forge a relationship of genuine love and understanding that shines in comparison to Coriolanus' obsessive projection onto Lucy Gray.

So, yeah, Katniss is Lucy Gray haunting Coriolanus. But I bet you anything that eighty-something year old President Snow looks at her, the girl on fire, bright and young and brilliant, emerging from a childhood of starvation with a relentless hunger for success, a talented and charming performer helping her win the Games, and he sees the ghost of his own past. And that's why he's so afraid of her! Because if he sees himself in her, then he's up against his own cunning, his own talent for manipulation, his own charisma, his own genius. He's up against the version of himself that he once wished to be, with the nightmare army of his childhood at her back and her star-crossed lover at her side, spewing Sejanus' truths in his own voice. This isn't to say that Katniss ever achieved the level of power and agency that Coriolanus did during her time with the rebellion, but it is to say that Snow was taken down by what truly terrified him - his own morality, come to finish the job.

The more I think about TBOSAS, the more I completely agree with this take. Katniss and Coriolanus are very alike, and yet so utterly different, and that’s totally on purpose. @petruchio your inverted trio theory scratches my brain in such a particular way, as does this meta, OP.

Ppl rlly be complaining about the decision to cast Tom Blyth as Coriolanus Snow, saying that he's "too hot" to dislike him when that's exactly the whole point of the saga — to make you forget about the cruelty of everything and focus only on the "pretty side". And that's literally panem et circenses.

Agh I'm so mad💀

Isn't that how the love triangle was supposed to do too? Make people forget that it's literally people dying in the arena while we root for which ships, and I meant we as in us the readers and the Capitol

Rant time!

I have just finished watching Catching Fire after rereading the Catching Fire book and???? WHERE IS PEETA. Where is Peeta the whole time in this movie? He just kind of sits there with quizzical looks on his face. I get it, it’s a long story to condense into 2h26min, but. Peeta is such a central character in this book. I’m upset.

I may be overfangirling this but if I didn’t know the story I guess I’d be really confused as to why Katniss wanted Peeta to be the one who lives so badly. I just feel like he wasn’t given much depth in the CF movie. Which is weird considering I think the movies did a pretty good job with that in THG. Peeta is so brilliant, kind and present this entire book.

On top of that, Katniss and Peeta don’t really seem to share what is going on, or even support each other that much. Aside from the scene where Peeta’s heart stops, which is very good, they feel distant. When they talk on the beach, it feels off. Why do you even need him, movie!Katniss? You look like coworkers or something. Weird. Where is everlark understanding and leaning on each other so much that Katniss wouldn’t risk Peeta removing his goddamn makeup in his own room because they might lock him away from her for the night? You know what I mean?

And what’s with Katniss kissing Gale before the reaping, while he’s fully awake and well? That is substantially different from kissing him when he was passed out and wishing him to not remember it the day after. (not me whining because evethorne got this and we didn't get the picnic scene)

What irks me the most about all of this is: why? I’m pretty sure it was of knowledge when the movie was made that Peeta mattered quite a lot to the story and to Katniss - because if he didn’t, if he was just some cute teammate with a crush on her, who she gives only one and a half fuck about - none of it would have happened. No berries, no defiance, no Snow using Peeta to hurt the Mockingjay and deeply as he could. No reason to have hope, no dandelion. No revolution!

With Peeta, I feel like this movie stripped him down to ill assorted bit of the love triangle. Which is not only annoying, but downright Capitol level of treating love as marketing. And stupid, because, as I hinted above, the books where already fully out, right? Before rewatching CF, I was just talking to a friend who hasn't read the books and she said - oh, I didn't think Katniss actually liked Peeta, thought it was just the shared trauma. Yes. That's what it looked like in this movie. And not because they were trying to not focus on love, because they've amped the love triangle thing up. So I don't get it. Why do you always have to take a nice character and treat them like less just because they’re nice? (Ron Weasley I'm talking about you) Tell me, am I exaggerating? Do I just love Peeta too much?

So turns out…..you guys are not gonna believe this…….but it turns out. Reading real books. Is good for you actually.

Let me be completely clear - I’m not being a sarcastic ass. I’m just realizing all over again, in real time, for myself, that reading a real life published book makes your neurons feel like they’re getting a spa day. Like I can feel my brain getting juicer and wrinklier with every page I turn. This shit is no joke, this is like hard drugs if hard drugs were good for you and made your brain feel revived and alive.

when snow says "it's the things we love most that destroy us" we always assume it's about lucy gray but are we sure he's talking about lucy gray and not about his love for power and control that destroyed his relationship with lucy and with sejanus and later destroyed him as a human being

some people in the notes saying that he isn't self-aware enough for it and I can see where you're coming from, but I'm rereading tbosas rn and this is in chapter 12:
