The Spleen

@deans-spleen / deans-spleen.tumblr.com

I’m Katie! I'm almost 30 and I like to knit sweaters while listening to smutty audiobooks or watching anime. If I'm not doing that I'm probably reading a webtoon.

Calvin's parents decide to take a Hawai'ian vacation. They're not sure how much of it their son will tolerate but they would like to do at least a few things that involve sandy beaches and scenic cycling routes. They are therefore pleased when Calvin seems to make friends with a local girl about his own age and the two of them run off to play

Now, from Calvin's point of view what has happened is that he spotted actual aliens, and starts trying to bring this to the attention if the adults. But the tourists are like, "that's nice, go shoot 'em with your water gun, have a good time," and the locals are like, "yeah, they're an older couple who decided to retire here. Happens all the time." Eventually, it becomes clear that Spaceman Spiff is going to have to handle it himself.

From Lilo's point of view, Jumba and Pleakley are her gay uncles, do you mind? Calvin does mind, and so the two of them spend the rest of the afternoon terrorizing Kaua'i in the effort to destroy one another while the aliens alternate between bailing them out of trouble and attempting to escape.

Hobbes and Stitch, meanwhile, are calmly playing checkers and drinking non-alcoholic margaritas.

I'm invested

people think knitting and crochet are nothing more than quaint little old lady hobbies and like, they absolutely are little old lady hobbies among other things but you should also know that in the fiber community there’ve been multiple cases of indie yarn sellers faking their deaths to try dodging accountability for being bad business owners

I'm sorry, they will WHAT, now?!?

Yeah apparently if you use the wrong brand or the wrong fiber content you get bullied so bad the mods of one subreddit banned discussions about certain topics altogether. I know I won't post there anymore.

Wow holy shit and I thought the needle wars (mostly joking) were bad

I know people get crapped on for crocheting or for using the “wrong” fiber, but I must be in the wrong subreddits cuz I’ve never seen the dramas on Reddit. Brb I’m gonna go look for it, even though I know it’ll probably give me a headache. Needle wars, lol

Needle wars were not a reddit drama, it's just my observation that in any given knitting-related group, the SECOND someone asks anything along the lines of "what's the best needle material?" no one can ever agree.

Never met anyone who actually likes plastic needles so I THINK we can at least all agree that those are awful?

Has anyone mentioned the Setting Babies On Fire argument yet?

I dunno about the plastic needle thing - I’ve got some lovely Prym Ergonomic ones which do wonders for not making my hands cramp.

1. How the hell did I forget the whole Babies on Fire discourse

2. I have never actually heard of those before! I haven't heard of ergonomic knitting needles before, actually. What makes them ergonomic, if you don't mind explaining?

Their shaft is triangular (rather than circular), which can make it easier to grip, and the points have a special shape I think to make picking up stitches easier? They're also very bendy.

Oh that is a very helpful summary, thank you!

I have exactly one pair of square needles and they're sort of uncomfortable with the way I hold them, but it's nice to hear about interesting varieties!
