Rapunzel simply nodded in response, figuring her blunt little response was probably enough talking for their meeting she pressed her lips together firmly and looked towards Eugene expecting him to do most of the talking.  

Her fingers tapped at the armrest of the seat to exert her frustration when he apologized for not contacting them earlier,knowing he’d really only contacted them since he needed more money from their pocket.  She briefly wondered what would happen if they lied and told him the royal family had miraculously gone broke.  

Eugene wasn’t sure how he felt about Rapunzel’s quietness. On one hand it was stopping her from putting her foot in her mouth and messing angering his father. On the other hand it put the burden of carrying on the conversation onto Eugene. It was very telling that Eugene didn’t even know how to make simple conversation with his own father. “I understand.  To be fair I didn’t write to you or try to come visit you or anything. Our lack of contact is both of our fault.” Eugene figured being diplomatic was better than pointing out that his father was the one who ended their chain of contact. “We have been very busy, as royals always are. Balls, lessons on how to be a prince, dinners, meetings. It can get exhausting. Then there’s the stuff we’ve been doing at the orphanage as sort of a practice for parenting”

"I’m sure it can be exhausting but is it not worth it to be with your lovely wife? Your parents are so lucky Rapunzel to get to share so much of the journey to parenthood with you. They’re right there for future first smiles and steps and words." Hopefully that sounded sincere and not like he was trying to slowly plant the seed of living in the castle with them, which of course is what he wanted. 

She pursed her lips as Eugene apologized,an apology she figured was pretty undeserving.  Still he was probably right to do so.  Eugene seemed to know how to navigate through situations better than her when her heart was involved.  

Rapunzel nodded stiffly at Stanley's comment, "Yes they share so much because they try so hard to actually be there"  She replied smiling sweetly, "It's also nice to have them because I know they'll give Eugene and I great advice as parents"  She added.  Then she was quiet again and hr fingers began to fiddle with the material of the couch to keep her distracted.  

Speak! || Rapunzel and Gothel

          Gothel looked to the side, hoping one of her trusted allies would return. Unfortunately that did not happen, and so the act of loving mother had to go on. “I do not know if I could do such act myself, dear.” She turned back to Rapunzel, walking towards the cold cell bars. Oh how the queen wished that guard wasn’t there, but if she sent him away he would never believe in her lies. For her disgust, people still loved the lost princess and would do anything to release her.

          No matter what she did to escape this fact, the princess was right. Gothel would only kill the princess after she had Rider. And perhaps the brunette was right once again when she stated that the queen could never kill her. However, that did not mean she couldn’t, and wouldn’t, torture her. 

          “No. Why would you think such thing? Of course he is not!” Gothel pretended to be frightened with the idea. “Dear, he is here to accompany me, to protect me. We both know what happened the last time a Queen was careless towards her safety…. Don’t we?” She stared into the girl’s green hues. Of course Rapunzel would never forget that. 

          “And, dear, I meant it when I said the people need you. I need you.” The woman grabbed the cell bars, the light that came from a crack on the wall now shining on her face and crown. “It is hard to know when I am making the right decisions for my people. You would never be silent. I know you hate me for keeping your secret for far too long, but I promise you, it was for your own good. There are people out there that would not think twice on killing you. But… If I cannot convince you otherwise, I guess this cell would do for a few days. If this is what you truly want.” 

          On that moment, the dungeons bars opened and her ally walked in. Gothel felt relieved as the new man mumbled shift change to the other one. Now things could get interesting between her daughter and she.

Rapunzel's glare hardened as Gothel continued the fake, caring mother act.  Her lips curled into a sneer when she threw in that one comment about her mother,  "Are you saying you're afraid of me?"  She taunted lightly.  

"You want my help on making good decisions?  Step down from the throne.  That's the right decision for my people!  All you do is lie to them, it's because of you Eugene and I had to hide"  She snapped, "I just can't believe people are actually falling for your thin deceit"  She said a little louder, glaring at the guards who surrounded he jail, some of them she recognized.    

"I'd rather rot in this jail than help you. At least Eugene's location would die with me"  She spat.  She prepared for Gothel's next round of insult when she turned her head at the sound of the dungeon doors opening.  As the new guard walked in, she cowered a little closer to the wall behind her, disgusted at how quickly her strong facade could drop and angry knowing Gothel could probably detect her fear.  "Who's this?"  She asked suspiciously eyeing the new visitor up and down for hints.

She pursed her lips when he tried to give them advice and simply nodding, pretending to keep his words in mind.   Sure listen to the father who only asked for money.   

She had to hold back a sigh of frustration too once he mention what she was assuming he invited them there for.  Deciding to act nonchalant about the request she shook her head slowly, “That’s really too bad.  I hope you find another place.   How is everything else? ” she asked   

Eugene had hyped himself all up to not give into his father but as soon as he’d heard that the man was experiencing such misfortune he could already tell that not giving in would be more difficult. There was a part of him that felt angry that it seemed like once again his father just wanted money or resources from them.  He wondered if Rapunzel’s reaction was a little harsh. She just kind of brushed off his father’s situation. Then again, she was probably dealing with this the way it should be dealt with. Eugene sighed. “That’s awful really..I’m sorry to hear that” he replied quietly. It was times like these when he missed being the guy who cared only about himself. 

Frankly, Stanley wasn't too surprised by how nonchalant Rapunzel was, but Eugene had surprised him. It seemed like they did not want at all to help financially and he didn't want to push it…for now. “Everything else is going well. I mean I’m very happy to see you two again. I apologize for not contacting you before now. I've just been busy working. I’m sure you two have been very busy as well”

"We’re still taking out time though" she added in quickly then took a seat on one of the couches in his home.   "How have you been?"  She asked in return to be polite.   She folded her hands on her lap meekly, but decided to let Eugene and Stanley do most of the talking.  

Rapunzel’s response told Eugene that he probably shouldn’t have mentioned trying to have children either because she didn’t want his father to know, or she was still far from ready for it. 

 ”Oh, you’re thinking of having children? That’s wonderful. Though I think you should get started on that as soon as possible. The two of you aren’t getting any younger .”

"I…I know but we want to make sure that we’re ready before we have a baby" Eugene replied. A snide comment about how his father should not be giving people advice on having children was withheld. Even if it was polite to ask Eugene had been dreading the ‘How have you been?’ question being posed to his father. That was the gateway question to him asking for something. 

"Frankly, things have not been so good. I’m at risk of losing the house. I need to find another place to stay but there really is not anything that I can afford. It’s a mess really."

He nodded and took some deep breaths as he tried to calm down more.  His father seeing him being nervous may actually just put him on edge and make the interaction worse. 

"Oh hello, I’ve got to say it’s quite a pleasant surprise to see that you two came today. Come in"  

"It’s nice to see you too" Eugene replied, "but why are you surprised? I mean you did invite us"

"Well, given how badly things ended before I didn’t think you two would come back."

She looked down in embarrassment when he mentioned the horrible way the last meeting.  She chewed her lower lip then looked up at him again, “I’m sorry things ended…not so well”  she mumbled gripping at her hair nervously.  ”May we come in?”  She asked meekly.  

Eugene could now see that his relaxed Rapunzel was now getting nervous too. That wasn’t too good for him since she was the one who was calming him. 

"Yes, come in" Stanley gestured for the pair of them to enter. He led them over to the couch to sit and talk. "So, how have things been with you two since we last spoke?"

Eugene let out a sigh of relief that the conversation didn’t start with some request of what his father wanted. “Things have been going good with us. Rapunzel and I are slowly starting to get ready to have a family someday.” After Eugene had said that he wasn’t so sure mentioning having children was such a good idea.

She pursed her lips and faced Eugene only to see him going back to being nervous.  She kissed his cheek again, ” Relax” she whispered before pulling away.  She got out with him then waited for the door to open.  As soon as it did she greet the most chipper greeting as she could for her father in law.

"I think we’re almost there so try to relax"  she told him soothingly, taking his hand and rubbing circles along his knuckles with her thumb.   A couple of minutes passed before the carriage came to a stop and the driver was opening the door for them both.  "Your highness’ we’ve arrived at your stop".  

The soft circles he was rubbing on his hand were certainly helping to calm him.  Once the carriage stopped though his nerves were through the roof.  Part of him wanted to tell the driver to turn around and go back tot he castle, but Eugene knew this had to be done. he couldn’t let go of that shred of hope that this would be a good meeting. “th…thank you” Eugene replied.  He helped Rapunzel out of the carriage and walked with her to the door.  After knocking softly on the door Eugene held his breath until it opened.

Now we don’t know what awaits us at your father’s so let’s just try to relax and hope for the best, alright?” She smiled softly.

"Ya, you’re right. I shouldn’t be so worried already" it probably wouldn’t help to be so on edge before they even said hello, but at least if he expected the worst he wouldn’t be disappointed if the worst is what happened. Instead of looking out the window at the scenery that was approaching his father’s house he kept his eyes fixed on Rapunzel hoping that would calm him.

"Eugene.  It does"  She insisted, "And I do need to understand, maybe not out of necessity but I want to understand what’s going on in your mind.  It helps me understand you.  So I can make you feel better"  She frowned slightly.   She sighed then looked down at her hands, "Eugene I’m sorry I don’t get along with your father.  I know I’m over protective, if you want I’ll just sit there for moral support today.  I promise.  This is what you want and I should be better at supporting your judgement".  

"Well, I mean I want you to stand by me and my choices, but I need someone to stop me if I’m about to make a horrible decision. Maybe don’t talk to my father. Wait, what am I saying? You should feel free to talk to him because I want you to be comfortable with him. I want you two to get along and for us to be a real family, I mean especially if we’re going to eventually have a child" he said quickly, nervously, as he looked out the window.

Even if he had of gotten adopted by a loving family he would have wanted to connect with his father, but he wouldn’t have put up with so much.  Her response was so simple that he wondered if she understood or if she just said that to avoid conflict. “Did what I said make any sense? I guess you don’t need to understand.”

The question that she posed was an interesting one. It was a question that he wasn’t even completely sure of the answer to. “I see the relationship that you have with your parents and I want a relationship like that.  I sometimes wonder if cutting him out of my life is the same as what he did to me when I was a kid. Not wanting a relationship because it seemed like having one would be difficult.  No matter what he did to me he is still my father.  If I deserve a second chance after being a thief then my father deserves a second chance to be a better person too” he rambled nervously, not sure if any of that made sense to her, 

She wanted to promise him that he was like the son of her parents.  That they'd give him that relationship, but she had the feeling it just wasn't the same to him since they were after all her parents.  She nodded slowly as she heard his side of things.  "I agree"  She replied softly then leaned over to kiss his lips softly.  She just hoped he'd at least have the self respect to know when he'd given too many chances and was being walked on.  She certainly had that problem and she was beginning to realize it was easier to spot it from the outside rather than being the person being played.  She sighed then sat back against her seat and looked out the window watching the scenery that rolled by.

There had been a part of Eugene that had wondered if it’d be best if Rapunzel stayed behind.  He needed her support though and he was much more likely to crack and give into his father’s potential wishes for more money than she was. “And I’ll stick by you. Forever.” he replied.

"Yes, I am quite nervous.  Even if he doesn’t ask for anything from us I’m worried that eventually, some other day he will. As much as it seems like he may only want to use us for our money or status i still don’t want him out of my life, even if that would be the best option."

She put her hand over his, "Don't be.  Things will be fine Eugene.  Not to mention you're not going in alone"  She reassured him softly.  "Why are you so desperate to keep him in your life?"  She continued to question him.  Mainly she wanted to better understand his need to keep such a rickity relationship in his life. 

Didn't he already have good friends in his new life?  She couldn't grasp the concept of wanting to keep someone like his father around.  But she wanted to.

Eugene was glad that Rapunzel was at least trying to be somewhat optimistic about this. He figured that was probably difficult for her given what happened with her father previously. He smiled softly at her as she spoke. At least it seemed like she was going to really try to play nice.

The idea of how having a child would effect their situation was one that Eugene hadn’t really thought of. It was tough, he wanted their future child to have a relationship with their grandfather, but he didn’t want it to be a toxic one. ” you…you’re right” he said nervously and nodded. “Thank you Rapunzel. Really it means a lot that you’ll come visit him with me” he followed after her.

She spun on her heels to face him and smiled, "Hey, even if I'm not your father's favourite person I'll stick by you through thick and thin"  She assured him, "I mean that's why we're married, right?"  She kissed his cheek lightly then continued her walk towards the stables. 

Once they were down there and she requested for a carriage they didn't wait long before their ride was prepared and they were both climbing into the back.  "Are you nervous?"  She asked curiously.

"The letter says that it has been too long since he’s last seen us and that he would like us to come over and visit. No mention of any reason for seeing us other than it being a long time since he saw us last.  I suppose that looks rather suspicious". Eugene figured that maybe it was just better to stay a little pessimistic about this. That way he probably wouldn’t get disappointed later.

"I do think we should go down and visit. There is a small chance that perhaps he doesn’t want anything from us other than our company." It was relieving to hear Rapunzel agree to not give his father any money.  That way Eugene alone wouldn’t be the bad guy if that’s what he actually wanted. 

"I think there is something he wants from us. The only thing I can think that he’d want from us is more money.  I know I don’t know the man too well yet, but he doesn’t seem that family oriented."

"Well...maybe he does want to catch up with us...it has been a while"  She mused, she figured she start now trying to put in the effort to make things right with his father.  Or at least decent.  She doubted she'd get anywhere today especially considering the last time she went over by herself that didn't help at all. 

"He might have to be soon, I mean we do plan on expanding our family soon"  She muttered quietly.  She didn't really catch how heavy the implication was that she was getting closer and closer to considering having a child with Eugene.  "I'll go ask for a carriage to be prepared"  She added in quickly then walked in the direction of the stables.

Perhaps he shouldn’t have jumped so quickly into sharing his news but he was anxious to see her reaction. “He didn’t exactly say what he wanted” he grimaced, “That could be a good thing though. It could mean that he doesn’t want anything other than just to see us.”

Even saying that Eugene felt horribly naive. “I think we should at least see him again. I mean just in case he has good intentions. Perhaps we should commit to not giving him any more money though.” 

"What did the letter say exactly?  Is he just asking us to come over for no reason?"  She asked.  That seemed odd and very out of character for him.  Unless he was keeping it vague so he could ask them for something once they were there. 

She nodded at his request,  "We could go down today if that's what you think is right Eugene.  Though I agree we're not giving that man one more cent"  She laid down that rule firmly.  

She felt bad for how firm her tone was and quickly softened her features as she spoke up again, "What do you think he'd want to see us for?"
