even past the fact that putting fan content behind a paywall would be copyright infringement it’s literally depressing that everywhere online you’re encouraged to monetize your hobbies until there’s not a single thing you do that isn’t a side hustle. like it’s truly so soul destroying that we live in such a capitalist hellhole that you can’t create stuff for yourself anymore because it’s a missed opportunity to make an extra $4 a month and how dare you not want to produce labor every day of your life in exchange for money

i actually have had this problem for so long, this mindset, i still have it even knowing that this is a thing i shouldn’t keep thinking 

because of my adhd i have an ever revolving carousell of crafty things in my head. i can crochet, knit, make tapestry weavings, embroidery, cross stich, macrame, draw, write, bead, and make jewelry of just a few things. 

you know what went through my head every time i learned how to do something? 

“How do I make this profitable?”

I don’t know when or where in my life I was indoctrinated to believe that my hobbies had to make me money. Everything I did, even down to reading a book, I thought “there has to be a point to this, I have to make money.”

And because of that, I always felt so guilty when my adhd made me go onto another craft before finishing the other projects. I felt like I was trapped in this revolving ride of projects I’d never finish. and yes, I blame the adhd for a lot of it, but i blame this need to make money, to monitize my skills, for the guilt of not completing a project. 

I’m better now, while I still trip up now and then I’m better at forgiving myself for not finishing something before I continue onto something else, and not think of everything as something that makes me feel like I haev to make money — but it’s still hard sometimes when you see shit like this. 

Not that there’s anything wrong with monitizing your skills whatsoever. But it’s not a necessity. 

People are always talking about making John Green say “I love cocks” when it comes to having fun with tumblr’s ability to edit everyone’s posts but that one post where that person was saying fuckers and it got repeatedly edited to fudgers and meaners was 10000% funnier
