It’s an opportunity most young musicians only dream of, the chance to attend The Julliard School in New York City.
And William Leathers, a 17-year-old from Toronto, was one of the three trumpeters this year given that chance.
Leathers auditioned and was accepted to the school’s elite undergraduate music program — something that gives him a chance to learn from some of the best in the world.
“I just want to be the best musician I can be,” Leathers told CBC Toronto’s Dwight Drummond Monday.. “I want to do well in every genre.”
But his acceptance came at a cost, a $364,000 cost over four years to be exact.

Help William Leathers, a talented Black teen achieve his dreams.

“Thanks for coming to my YouCaring page! My name is William Franklyn Leathers, and I was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I’ve been playing the piano since the age of four, and when I was 12 years old, I became the youngest trumpeter accepted into the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra, as well as the Halton Mississauga Youth Orchestra. So it was a dream come true for me when I received my acceptance letter to The Juilliard School, since I’m one of only three trumpeters that were accepted to Juilliard this year. The biggest challenge for me, right now, is being able to cover tuition and housing expenses. My parents are doing their best, but right now we’re in a bit of a funding shortfall. The total cost for Juilliard is $71,000 in US dollars per year for four years, which comes out to roughly $91,000 every year in Canadian dollars. We’ve been able to put together about $25,500 so far, and unfortunately scholarships and grants are harder to come by as an international student. So I’m raising money to at least cover the first year, and we’ll see where it goes from there.
I’ve wanted to go to Juilliard for as long as I can remember, and I’ll never forget the look on my parents’ face when we opened the acceptance letter. But the reality is, there’s a pretty big gap between what our family can come up with, and what it costs for tuition, housing, and books. So if you can find it in your heart to help, my family and I would appreciate it so much. Thanks again, and I hope to make everyone proud!

I’ve seen him play in TSYO concerts and he’s so good!!! Help him get to Julliard!

tumblr : @secretcrab website : http://www.secretcrab.com twitter : @ingle_neil instagram : @ingleneil ___________________ NEIL’S INTERVIEW :  Spotlight : Can you introduce yourself ? Neil : Hi! My name is Neil Ingle. I’m currently in my last year of Bachelor in Character Animation at The Animation Workshop. During these three years, I learned to animate in 2D and 3D, but also to work in a team on awesome projects! Before that I did a animation degree in France (DMA Cinéma d'Animation) for two years at l'Institut Sainte Geneviève. I liked drawing above all so I was naturally geared towards 2D animation. Spotlight : What’s animation for you, and why does it fascinates you ? Neil : Animation is for me a very rich medium because it’s so universal. It can be used in many different ways (short films, tv series, games, commercials, music videos, etc etc!!!) and have a great impact on people. I’m most passionate about animating characters and creating cool visuals. I like to try out and experiment with a lot of different mediums, like hand drawn 2D, 3D animation, After Effects puppets and so on. I’m interested in finding new ways of blending different styles to create unique and original content. There is so much things you can do and I just want to try it all! Spotlight : What do you think about Gifastic, and what did it brings you? Neil : I like Gifastic for many reasons. First it’s a way of creating cool animations with my friends, and the community aspect of it is great! It’s also a great way of practicing animation and experimenting different things, and having a deadline for personal projects is a really good idea. Uniting with other passionate people and sharing your creations with the world is very rewarding. Personally I really love the looping Gif format, it’s a really cool and fast way to share your work with others. I do wish social media platforms would make it easier for content creators to share Gifs and short animations. Spotlight : What would you say to someone who wants to get into animation ? Neil : I would want to tell people who are interested in animation to go for it 100%! There is SO MUCH knowledge about animation on the internet, you should really go and find it! You can learn AL LOT by yourself, but I think finding the right environment (school, work, studio, woods? whatever!) for you to be able to practice your craft is essential! No matter what style of animation you want to go into, you need to put in the practice hours. It’s going to take a while and it can have some impact on your health and body. In any case, you should always prioritize your well-being over the work. If this is going to be your career, you would want it to last for a . I would recommend people to explore as many different styles of animations as they can and learn about how animation is made all over the world. If you have the opportunity, I definitely recommend meeting other passionate people and doing projects together. To recap : Educate yourself! Practice! Explore! Create a community! And most of all have fun! ___________________ Find all Gifastic episodes HERE ! We also are on Facebook ! You want to make a gif with us ? Try the Gifastic Challenge !

I don’t know how I could’ve been so ignorant about myself… so… so stupid. And you know what I’m talking about, don’t you? You knew before I did.
