she had to admit that that wasn’t fully true at all. he seemed like the sort of guy she would have saddled up with as soon as she saw him. blonde, blue eyes, tall, and a jaw like his met her list of qualities in a guy. “ alright so maybe not after drinking. but i’d make sure you bought me a few, ” faith smirked in response. she had a hard time believing that he was telling the truth but she had no proof to show that he was a danger to herself or anyone else. for now. “ –in that case, wanna share how you know about vamps and how to take ‘em down? ” because even though the world was aware of slayers, not everyone knew how to handle a vampire.
another question with a hard answer. how honest could he be? sometimes the lies were tiring, but they kept him alive; that didn’t mean he didn’t like to flirt with danger. “ when you’ve been around as long as i have, you learn some things. i tend to attract trouble. ” it was simply a h i n t, nothing more. he couldn’t give anymore than that, even if he had wished to. it would do nothing but put everyone involved in danger. that didn’t mean, however, on the rare occasion when the truth came out it wasn’t always fun to see people’s disbelief. “ –what’s your deal? obviously you are someone that knows quite a bit. ”

“ –i don’t know. right now you look like the type of guy i’d take home after a long night of drinking, ” she replied with a small smirk, eyes giving him a once over before she sobered up. “ but you’re not giving off any bad tingles so you must not be evil. unless you’ve got magic behind you cloaking what you really are. ” look at her showing that she’d read a few books; skimmed actually.
a chuckle, one born of surprise, rumbled in the back of his throat. that was an answer he had not been expecting. “ while i’m flattered, only after you had been drinking? i’m also kind of offended. ” this was easy; he could deal with this. but questions...questions he couldn’t deal with. still, he felt some honesty was in order. “ i promise though, no magic here. what you see is all there is to it. ” well, mostly, but he wasn’t going to say that.

dark eyes had witnessed the easy take down of a vamp by what appeared to just be a handsome looking dude. but she should have known that if he could take a vampire down with ease, that there was more to him. “ well, i’d like to say no but yea. they’re all pretty fuckin’ dumb, ” faith replied with a small shrug. “ sweet moves by the way. you uh…some kind of demon fighting demon or some other kind of…thing? ”
oh, what a question that was. obviously this was someone experienced with all that went bump in the night, to notice that he was...different right away. he couldn’t say that was something he had to deal with all that often. “ i don’t know, what would y o u guess i am? i have to say, i’m curious. ” the teasing smirk was almost palpable, the comment a blatant attempt at avoiding the question; he hoped he would get away with it.
“ what an entirely unwelcoming surprise. ” busted knuckles wiped the blood that had dribbled from his split lip away, a certain kind of quirk to his lips. “ are all the vampires in this town so stupid, or was it just that one? ” the damned thing had come at him so suddenly, caden a l m o s t hadn’t realized he had an audience. it was too late to try and deny what the damn thing was, considering he had wasted it.

“ i wouldn’t know – i don’t go in BARS , much less get into bar fights . “ kimberly said with a laugh . “ i’m not too big on drinking and certainly not in a crowded bar . “ she shook her head . when kimberly felt adventurous and did drink – it was wine , and in the comfort of her own apartment .
her eyes looked down , at his hands again , but she smiled this time . “ oh , i wouldn’t say that . i BELIEVE you . “ kimberly said that honestly . she did believe him . bloodied knuckles wasn’t enough of a reason to judge somebody , was it ? kimberly didn’t know him , after all – he could be a perfectly decent guy who just happened to be in the wrong place . that was she was TELLING HERSELF , anyway .
“well, that’s a relief. i was kind of worried that maybe the c o p s were going to get called. it, uh, does kind of seem like maybe i committed homicide with the bloody shirt and all.” honesty; he seemed to be full of it today, and it was mildly unnerving. lying was second nature now, a language he had become so fluent in that he almost n e v e r noticed when he slipped into it. he wasn’t sure what had gotten into him.
uncertainty flared in his belly for a long moment. he had already gone this far, why not go a little further. “i’m caden, by the way.” a calloused hand was offered impulsively; a rather awkward attempt at manners, he thought. his hands had just been covered in blood, and he was offering one for her to shake? jesus, why did he do the shit he did?

“you say that like i’m here with a business proposal.” there’s an affronted edge to her tone, but a contradictory HINT of a smile tugging at the corners of her lips. still flags the attention of the bartender and orders him another — and a glass of w i n e for herself — but she keeps it up. “can’t a girl just want a DRINK, no strings?”
“i suppose, but i know better.” a laugh, soft and cynical, escapes his lips. he was too old — had been around for too long — to even think about believing it. “people only seek me out when they want something, so you might as well just come out with it.” sometimes he was careless and, WELL, sometimes certain circles knew what he was. it was a problem.

“ sure thing . “ kimberly replied with a careful smile – he didn’t seem too bad . maybe she had been quick to judge him based on , well , the blood . that was enough to make ANYBODY second guess who they were talking to , though .
the brunette raised an eyebrow at him as he defended his situation . “ a bar fight , huh ? “ she repeated . it wasn’t an impossible story , so MAYBE it was true . kim could give him the benefit of the doubt . “ must have been one heck of a FIGHT . “ kimberly mused , “ over what ? “
a smile, one tinged with an age old kind of tired, pulled at his lips. “ what are bar fights ever about? someone was being a dick. the bartender was getting some unwanted attention, so i took care of it. ” violence; oh how he wished it was unnecessary (liar). how often did his nights end with him cleaning wounds, with wiping blood from his face? too often now a days.
gently, his thumb ran across his knuckles, the wounds far worse than he had realized. had he gone that overboard? probably; it would explain why they kicked him out. “ damn, i’m really not helping my case with my hands busted up like this, huh? ” it’s a softer smile on his face this time around, the quiet hope of her accepting his sincerity making him force himself to be at ease. god, people were hard to deal with.

“ you THINK ? shouldn’t you know what’s on your hands ? “ kimberly wasn’t stupid , she could see his hands were blood-stained . she had seen blood enough times to know that . “ uh , yeah , it’s PRETTY noticeable . “ the brunette answered , digging around in her purse to pull out a hand wipe – “ here , you don’t want the wrong person to see that . “ of course ; that didn’t mean kimberly trusted this stranger , but there was strength in kindess , right ?
mild surprise was evident on his features, the wipe accepted with hesitance born from years of constant distrust. kindness wasn’t something he was used to, not anymore. “ i–thank you. ” the words were oddly h e a v y on his tongue; when was the last time he had said that to someone?
discomfort made its self known as he cleaned his hands, his eyes steadily avoiding hers for a moment. “ i, uh, know how this looks. i didn’t do anything too bad, i promise. just... a bar fight. ” there was more to it than that, but he wouldn’t admit to anymore; he was surprised he had even said that much. he wasn't used to feeling like he had to explain, and it didn't help that he couldn't deny it this time around. he knew what his reaction would have been in her position, and he'd prefer it if the cops weren't called.
