“Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?” “No,” they answered. He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.” ‭‭John‬ ‭21:4-6 We have a practical God. He is mindful of the needs of His children. "Give us this day our daily bread" is not an empty phrase. Present our practical needs to Him. He is the same today as He was at the lake of Galilee. When He provides, let us be like the disciple who Jesus loved and declare: "It is the Lord!"

"Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit." John 15:2

We cannot become strangers to the pruning. Trials will and must come our way so we may bear more fruit. May we keep our eyes on heaven, for what's eternal, and rejoice when He prunes.

“And he said, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!”” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭27:23 The cries of "Hosanna" are now replaced with "Let him be crucified!" Was no one in that crowd who Jesus healed, who He fed? Did no one ask him to be spared? No. They ALL said, "Let him be crucified." This blind unreasonable hatred of Christ is no different today. He has done no evil. He has done no harm. It is Christ who keeps those who hate Him fed. It is Christ who keeps those who hate Him breathing. Yet we still hear cries similar to those Matthew recorded from that day: "Barabbas" is similarly preferred before Jesus. The robber and murderer, the gossip columns, the arrogance and lust, are crowd favorites instead of the Prince of Life.

“Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?” But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭27:13-14 I often wonder how exactly does Jesus die for our sins. But today I understood that it is in Christ's silence that we were redeemed. The Jesus who left elders and Pharisees in shock with the power of His words can mostly certainly defend Himself and clear His accusations. But He was there to represent us. Though He is sinless, He was guilty of our sins. In His silence, He took up our pain and bore our suffering. In His silence, He took up the iniquities of all of us. In His silence, we were healed. "Like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth." Isaiah 53

Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me. Matthew 25:41-43

We may think lightly now of our need for Christ and neglect to care for those suffering around us, but those omissions will be fatal in the last day. Jesus does not mean to say that we will be condemned because we have not been charitable or we will be saved if we are generous. Salvation is not through our work, but through the production of our fruit, we prove that the Spirit is working in us. The Christ in us is what sets us apart. Our future depends on our intimate relationship with the Father.

What I love most about this passage is the stunning reflection of Christ’s role in our sorrows—which is much greater than we may think. Are we hungry? Jesus says, “ I was hungry.” Are we thirsty? Jesus says, “I was thirsty.” Are we feeling lonely and excluded? Jesus says, “You did not invite ME in.” Are we sick and neglected? Jesus says, “I was sick.” Whether or not we realize it, He dwells in our suffering bodies and our afflictions are His. Such is His unfathomable love.

Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour. Matthew 25:13

Many of us feel like we are invincible. We live as if we believe that we will have plenty of time to get our lives straightened out later. But our life is not our own, and it can be taken away at any moment. We must get prepared spiritually so that we are ready for the Lord’s coming. Jesus calls us to be ready in our relationships with God and the people around us. At any moment of our day, whether in our homes, or at work, or in our minds, or on our credit card bills, He calls us to not be ashamed when we meet Him at this unknown day and hour. May His grace awaken all our procrastinating souls...

At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. Matthew 24:10-12

There seems to be little hope for the struggling and persecuted saints in these words. Who among us can persevere in running the heavenly race on our own? But blessed be the Father who preserves us from falling: for “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6).

No matter how much governments legislate against Christianity, no matter how bad the political situation is, no matter how much damage natural disasters cause, the gospel cannot be stopped until Jesus returns in glory and power. If we are convinced that the end of the world will only come when Jesus returns visibly and powerfully, we can maintain hopeful despite the betrayals and sufferings.

But when we ask? When will this day come? When will it end? There are so many obsessed with the dates, events, and details of Jesus’s prophecy. But that is not Jesus’s intention. We have a very practical God who heals the blind and explains to us the meanings of parables. So if He thinks it’s important to us to know the timetable, He would most definitely tell us. Instead, He focuses on the attitudes and qualities that will guide our discipleship in the challenging times ahead. If we are gripped with the fact that the souls of those around us are at stake, we will move our focus on the prophecy beyond our curiosity and see the need for repentance, the need to spread the gospel, and the need to live out the righteousness of the kingdom in our daily lives.

But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. (Matthew‬ ‭23:8‬ ‭NIV‬) ‬ The ultimate goal of a rabbi's disciple was to become a rabbi himself. But a disciple of Jesus will always and forever be a disciple because Jesus alone is our Teacher. We are all brothers of one family and are all equal in status. There are no authoritative teaching positions. God alone has the authority. Our desire to teach the Word must not lead to arrogance of our titles. It is not wrong to be the worship team leader, the small group leader. But we must not use our titles to command authority and manipulate people into following us. Our titles make it easier for everyone to identify who we are. And it is up to us to use them as blessings to others so they may seek closer relationships with Christ.

“So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” Matthew 22:21

State and government has its authority and we as citizens have duties to it. But Jesus warns us to never forget that God has his throne and we must not allow the earthly authorities make us traitors to God’s kingdom. But what I love most is that God as the creator has sovereign right over all creation. What is Caesar’s is also God’s. Our duties to God covers all of life and the way we must serve our government is by first serving God.

Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered. Matthew 21:18-19

Fig trees produces fruit before leaves so when the leaves are fully grown, it is natural to expect fruit. But on this particular fig tree, Jesus found nothing on it except leaves. It skipped the most important step of producing fruit to rush into a deceptive promise of maturity. Sadly this resembled Jerusalem—where pious rituals and religious pretense were more important than repentance and faith.

Jesus came to the tree as He came to the Jews and found nothing but leaves. This green but disappointing tree illustrates our fate of eternal fruitlessness if we choose to merely display righteousness instead of letting God transform our hearts. Barren systems of religion will wither away before living faith.

They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Matthew 21:7-8

There is something very simple and natural about this scene to me that makes it full of heartiness. Unlike the artificial ceremonies of governments or monarchs, the King’s ride is triumphant yet humble. The disciples voluntarily lend their own clothes and crowd places their cloaks on the road unrehearsed. Adam and Eve covered themselves with leaves in shame and now both clothes and leaves are at the feet of the Redeemer.

The errand Jesus sends his disciples to run seems very strange—to go to a village and “you will find a donkey tied there , with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.” Take this scenario out of the bible and my first instinct might be that it’s describing a robbery! Yet Jesus protected them from any suspicion and they encountered no difficulty. In the same way for us, we must do as he commands. He commands with authority and that authority is our protection.

Does it not amaze you that our Father knows the position of every animal in the world? No matter of life is beneath him. Even in His grandeur, He asks for the donkey to be brought with her colt so they would not have to part. How gentle and merciful is our King! And how blessed are we to call Him Father!

The crowd wanted to hear Jesus but could not do so because of the shouts of the blind men; they “rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, ‘Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” (Matthew 20:31)

Jesus performed so many miracles that I unfortunately find myself speeding up in my reading when the blind and sick ask for mercy. “It’s all the same—they ask and Jesus heals them”—oh how undeserving I am to be His disciple—so unimpressed at His extraordinary grace! But praise Him for calling my attention to what’s important:

The “problem” is that men without sight cannot be quieted if there is an opportunity to obtain sight. If we truly realize how blinded we are in sin, we will and must “shout all the louder” for mercy when we seek the Lord--no matter what rebukes and distain others throw our way. When Jesus touched their eyes, “immediately they received their sight and followed him” (Matthew 20:34). What is the proof of their sight? They “followed him.” In the same way, Jesus calls us to use our spiritual sight and keep close to his heel. The blind men cannot see Jesus but we are asked to behold them. Yet I fail to see the importance of the miracle. Who is truly blind? The Son of David still lives, still opens the eyes of the blind, and still hears the prayers of those who know their blindness and cries for mercy. I pray that we can "shout all the louder" to the Lord to heal our spiritual blindness for immediately.

In the parable of the workers in the vineyard, the workers who came early grumbled against the landowner when they learned that those who came later are receiving the same as them. Our Lord responds: “Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous? So the last will be first, and the first will be last.” Matthew 20:15-16

I want to share with you my weakness--when I found myself resenting someone I know who is blessed with wealth. I even justified my jealousy by telling myself that “she’s not even spending it wisely.” Then God led me to this verse this morning and what can I say but cry out to the Lord to have mercy on my poor spirit!

I am no different than the laborer in the parable who was blinded by envy. I fixed my eyes on earthly treasures instead of serving out of gratitude. The only possible reason behind jealousy is that I must think I deserve more. But it is only through Christ that any disciple receives anything and the only appropriate response for other’s blessings is to rejoice. All wealth is the Lord’s and to think that we deserve something because of our time and commitment negates the work of the Father.

We have nothing but we are called to the kingdom of heaven. If I truly understand that privilege, what else can be produced in my heart but gratitude? All that we are and all that we ever hope to be is a pure gift. Just because God is good to others, does this deprive us of the good He has granted me? I pray that we may all applaud the Father who blesses others so largely and heal our blinded sight so we may see His goodness.
