This is The Supernaturalist by Eion Colfer. (the same author who wrote the Artemis Fowl books)

It is a dystopian science fiction novel and is one of my favorite books.

The synopsis on the back goes as follows:

In the future, in a place called Satellite City, Cosmo Hill enters the world, unwanted by his parents. He’s sent to the Clarissa Frayne Institute for Prenatally Challenged Boys. Freight Class.
Here, the boys are put to work by the state, testing highly dangerous products. Cosmo realized he must get away, and escapes with the help of the Supernaturaliasts, a group of kids who have the same special abilities as Cosmo - they can see supernatural Parasites, creatures that feed on the life force of humans. The Supernaturalists patrol the city at night, hunting the Parasites in hopes of saving what is left of humanity in Satellite City. But soon they find themselves caught in a wen more complicated than they’d imagined, and they discover a horrifying secret that will force them to question everything they believe in.

I love this book because of how many twists and turns it takes through out its plot and the way this future world could be our own. The first three words in the book set up where exactly the book is and when, by stating:

Satellite City, Northern Hemisphere. Soon

I first encountered this book listening to it on tape, the reader being Chiwetel Ejiofor, who does a brilliant job at bringing the characters in the book alive with his voice.

The novel, both the book and audio version, is a fantastic read and I would recommend it for all who love science fiction and dystopian literature.

First off I really do love this concept, and so I'll probably submit quite a few. X3

This book is "Idlewild" By Nick Sagan, who;s one of the sons of Carl Sagan (Awesome astronomer guy).

Here's the synopsis from the back

He calls himself Halloween. He is a unique student attending a most prestigious boarding school-- the Idlewild Immersive Virtual Reality Academy. While his body sleeps, his mind interacts with those of his fellow students under the tutelage of the enigmatic artificial intelligence known as Maestro.
An inexplicable energy surge has damaged the IVR and fragmented Halloween's mind. Convinced this anomaly was deliberately triggered to kill him, Halloween is desperate to recover his memories-- only to discover a devastating revelation about his true existence....

I really REALLY love this book, I actually found the series by picking up the second novel in cassette format (Idlewild is the first of three in the series) for a buck 25. And it was amazing, even better than Idlewild. But if I'm gonna recommend a series you may as well start with the first book, right!?

Anyhow, I haven't read the third book (1st Idlewild, 2nd Edenborn, 3rd Everfree) because according to reviews it was rather underwhelming. Too much of a "happy ending" and I like my series to end on a morose note (I was disappointed Harry Potter didn't die for real, very very disappointed) .

But yes! I definitely recommend! It was very well-written. Lots of intrigue, character development, and it's really rather short, only 273 pages. :3
