Hello! I love this blog. I am almost a sophomore in college, and I recently decided on becoming a vet. I have done so much prep-work the last week to get my head on straight (like going to advisers, etc.) However, the last two semesters I have taken classes that will barely help me at all to get into vet school. I am so stressed out already and I was wondering if you had any advice. Thanks!

I am glad you like the blog! (Sorry I have been not so active recently, I have had finals and spring break and then I got the flu, so I have been out of commission)

Congrats on your decision to be a vet! Don't worry about the last two semesters. I actually was in an entirely different major for a WHOLE year before I fully decided on being a vet! And now I am graduating a year early, so it says a lot about being able to make up ground and how deciding early gives you some "wiggle" room to play with. Now that you have your decision down, I suggest looking into the classes you need to take, and trying to plan out when and how to take the classes you need most efficiently over the semesters (try to plan as far ahead as you can, but know that it might and probably will change a bit)

Hope that helps! Let me know if you got any more Q's!

Will I get into OSU with 2 C's ? One in Gen Chem 1 and the other in Gen Chem 2 ? The majority of my other grades are A's with some B's

No idea. Grades are not the only determining factor in admissions. Test scores, experience, personal statement, interview, and countless other factors come into play. Chances are though 2 C's won't detrimentally affect your chances.

Through the pathway that you're doing, how many years will it take for you to completely finish and be a vet?

Well I actually don’t plan on becoming a “standard” vet, in the context of doing private practice.

I will have done 4 years of college (BS in Cell Bio and Chemistry), 4 years of vet school (DVM), and then 3 years of a Veterinary Pathology and Bio terrorism specialty. So…. 8 years to be a DVM, and then 11 at the end.

But who knows, plans could change and I could end up doing private practice!

hello! i'm a freshman pre-vet major, and i was wondering what internships or other experiences that you've had that you've listed on your graduate school applications.

Hello to you! Lets see here:

- Worked in 3 different veterinary hospitals / clinics for about 3 years

- Hosted and ran a handful of animal camps for the public through various humane societies

- Internship at a human hospital studying pathology and physiology

- Research through my school studying plant pathology and zoonotic diseases.

I have a problem. I didn't apply to the Vet school in my state because their credentials are really high and I didn't even know that I wanted to go to vet school then. Now I do but the one in my state is better than a school in Alabama but I have a full tuition scholarship to the one in Alabama. Should it matter how "good" it is or should I just go to the one in Alabama because I have a scholarship there, even though it isn't as good? Thanks! This blog is great

Its personal opinion. To me it doesn't really matter a whole lot, but it is up to you. It seems like since you are worrying about it it must be a big deal for you, but think critically about what is the most important factor for you!

Have you always wanted to be a vet? What other jobs/careers have you considered or would like to do? By the way, GREAT blog; it never fails to make me laugh! x :)

Glad you like the blog! :]

No actually, I have debated since I was little between two career paths: Veterinarian and Marine Biologist. For the longest time I was back and forth, and then in my sophomore year of college I decided to finally take the plunge and decide I was going to be a veterinarian, and I have never looked back.

Some jobs that I think you be pretty fun would be:

Marine biologist (always wanted to work with sharks)

Doctor (I like medicine)

Biomedical engineer (science + medicine)

Pathologist

Helicopter pilot (military family plus a pilot father)

All of these careers I would love to do, and who knows, one day I might be able to use veterinary medicine to do something similar!

This may be a stupid question, buttt, do you apply for vet school before or after your first 4 years of college? I know at Mississippi State, there's an early admittance program, but I'm not sure when to apply! Thanks :D

Avatar

Well I do know Mississippi state has that program, but as I never looked into it and I do not live in Mississippi, I do not know the details unfortunately. But as for the rest of the programs, you apply during your last year of college (similar to when applying to college in high school) or you can apply when you finish college. The choice is yours. Basically one can apply as soon as he/she has met the pre-requirements!

Hi there:) I'm a senior in high school and planning to go down the pre-vet route. I'm a little worried about not being smart enough and not being able to keep up when I go to university. I have gotten a B (75%) in physics, a B (%80) in chem, an A (80%) in precalc, and an A (%97) in Bio, From what I heard people going into the pre-vet program have much higher grades and I'm worried I will fall flat once I go to uni (if I get accepted). Do you mind me asking what your grades were like in highschoo

No no I don't mind in the slightest. :]

Well my grades in high school were pretty good, I wasn't a 4.0 student but I think I ended up graduating with a 3.85 or so (something around there, its been awhile haha). But to be honest, high school grades mean NOTHING once you make it into university. Once you get in, in reality its pretty much a clean slate.

University is very different from high school, a lot of kids learn much better in it, so as long as you focus and buckle down, you can come out with great grades, and those high school grades won't even be mentioned when dealing with vet school!

Hope that helps, let me know if you got any more questions!
