Unreal

Amazing

Can we get a name???

This is Chinese artist, Luo Li Rong

Here’s a snippet about her from this article (that also features more photographs of her work, including this sculpture):

Rong has pursued sculpting since an early age. She studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, then under the tutelage of sculptor Wang Du, and later she “immersed herself” in figurative sculpture techniques used by European artists in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Their sense of femininity plays a defining role in Rong’s contemporary works, and the stylistic guidelines help carry on the tradition of realistic sculptures in art.

They can’t afford our silence. Talk about this to everyone.

Fuck

“The Chechen government has denied allegations of a gay purge in the region, despite many victims coming forward to reveal their ordeals.“

“World Leaders” have “pressured” the homophobe, Putin, to investigate at the cost of more Gay and Bi men’s lives. It can only escalate.

Dear internet,

Please give me all the advice you have on writing cover letters. Like, the closer you can get to literally just writing a cover letter for me, the better. Ok bye.

This is how I did the one for my librarian position. I hope it helps.

Dear Person Hiring for this Job,

I am writing to ask you to consider me for X position. This is a paragraph about why I want to do X position in general. It includes at least one personal detail and at least one job skill I consider a particular strength. It argues that I am passionate about this career. It is not long.

I have had the opportunity to gain experience in this job by - paragraph about my work or study experience. It should go from most recent experience back. Include some details about your responsibilities/achievements in your most recent or most important positions. If you have mostly study experience, give more detail about what exactly you studied. If you shadowed people, mention that. If your work experience is largely unrelated, try to shoehorn some of it in (e.g. I gained experience working with people by). You can supplement with relevant hobbies. (But if you do have recent, relevant work experience, you should largely be detailing that. Only embroider the other stuff if you need to flesh it out.) This should be the longest paragraph.

I hope you will consider allowing me to do X thing at your company. This is a few sentences about why I want to work at your company in particular and what I think I could bring. Try to mention at least one detail from the company website, so they know you visited it. This is a short paragraph that parallels the first one.

Thank you very much for your time and attention.

Sincerely,

Person You Would Be a Fool Not to At Least Interview

oh my god thank you this is relevant to current interests

Two other points, to challenge what’s being said above a little:

1) Remember that the person reading this cover letter wants to know how you can contribute to the company. Not how excited you are about the position: it’s all about what they gain. Try framing the whole thing in that sense — “You would gain my X awesome skill that would help you Y with your mission.” “Here’s why I’m awesome and a great fit for making your company go better.”

2) At the end, ask for the interview. “I am available at PHONE NUMBER at your convenience. I look forward to speaking with you about this great opportunity soon.” Maybe even say you’ll be following up at a specific time and date. Ask for the job. People respond to that, and it’s a good way to fake confidence until you make it. Ask for the job.

Okay, three points. People reading cover letters get SO BORED going through them. Think about starting off with a story that relates to why you’re interested in the job, or that demonstrates a skill or a strong interest that would make you a good candidate. Be memorable — people remember stories, even (maybe especially) very little ones.

Man of the moment Keanu Reeves has shown his generosity by giving away £50 million of his earnings from the Matrix sequels. The 38-year-old decided to hand over the money to the unsung heroes of the sci-fi blockbusters - the costume and special effects teams.

Confirmed. He’s also dumped millions into cancer research. I really do love Keanu Reeves a lot.

Keanu Reeves is like the nicest person. He still lives in an apartment/flat and he gives most of his money away to charities and people who need it. He even invites some paparazzi people to sit down and eat with him when he’s at a coffee shop or restaurant. He’s such a nice person.

When I was working on the UWS, one of my delivery guys accidentally backed his scooter into a parked car in front of the restaurant. I went out to help, since the driver didn’t speak much English, and it turned out the car belonged to Keanu Reeves. He helped us pick the scooter up, and when I asked if we could exchange insurance information (because the front of the car was pretty banged up), he kept telling us not to worry about it and put his hand on the driver’s shoulder and said “I just want to make sure you’re okay, man. Are you okay?” And he was so sincere about it and so kind that I decided in that moment I would always defend Keanu Reeves at all costs. He is an excellent man.

I need to be more like Keanu Reeves because I’m evil compared to him.

“Next few centuries”

Keanu dropping hints that he is an immortal.

i love keanu reeves

My wife and I were dining at Nobu’s in Honolulu and sitting across from us was Keanu or at least I thought it was. We kept talking about whether it was him or not and finally, I decided to throw some old school Bill & Ted at him.

I stood up and threw my arms up into the motion of an air guitar, my wife is begging me to sit back down, and I pointed at the guy who may be Keanu Reeves, and said, “Most Excellent.”

He stood up and did it back at me. Then we both had a moment and pointed at each other. I sent him another of whatever it was he was drinking. It was a cucumber sake martini. That was the end of it.

Or so I thought.

He left before we finished our meal. By the time we were done, dessert came that we didn’t order. We thought, “oh, must be compliments of the chef.” Then the bill never came. When we asked for it, our waitress said Keanu Reeves took care of it.

IT WAS REALLY HIM. And he left a note. It said, “thanks for the refresh. Keanu.”

When I finally saw him again years later, because of work. I brought it up. Then he air guitar and said, “most excellent. I remember. At Nobu’s. Thanks for the drink.” We chatted a bit and I got an autograph for my mum because she’s a huge Keanu fan. Then that was that.

What a moment.

An angel

And he does a lot of anti human trafficking work iirc. Seems like a really awesome guy.

Back when I first moved to NYC, I got a job as a theater usher. We were all young, 18-20 or so, and it was heavily impressed upon us that we needed to treat the theatergoers with TOTAL respect at ALL times or risk our jobs. As such, we were all totally underprepared for the drunk guy who tried to steal a bottle of wine from the lobby bar during intermission. We were trying to politely get the bottle back, but he was growing loud and belligerent. Since the second act was now starting, this was a countdown to all of us being in trouble.

Then Keanu walks up. Calmly charms the guy. Slips the usher behind the bar cash to cover the bottle, without the guy even noticing, and walks him back in to his seat like it’s a normal thing he does every day. He didn’t know the guy, didn’t know any of us, but effortlessly deescalated the situation and quite probably saved some jobs that night.

Just a wandering do-gooder, this man.

Okay so I mean, a lot of this has to do with the angle and the makeup and the filter, but occasionally I realise I've gone up a point or two in the last few years. Which is a relief because I can't see it myself unless I take a photo 😂😩 Granted, I've gained weight (not a bad thing I know but something I've yet to come to terms with & started working effectively on) and lost a bit of the poser attitude but I'm slowly growing happier with my appearance. Chuffed to bits with the comparison, honestly, and my makeup in the photo on the right 🙋🏻 (And yes, without the makeup I still have very fair eyebrows. Bite me)

For anyone who's interested in VERY cheap, p good quality makeup, have a look at this. I got this for £1 on amazon, with free prime delivery. (It's £4.99 delivery if you don't have prime) Lamora seems to do amazing deals on amazon every so often. Palettes or brush sets for £1. This palette is very soft, the eyeshadows are a little crumbly because of that but the pigmentation, even of the matte shades, is pretty good. Very very good at blending and pretty buildable, and especially for those who love makeup and don't have a lot of money, I'd say it's great. Anyway, you can't go wrong for £1 including p&p Includes a photo with and without flash.

Just remember. There is no such thing as a fake geek girl. There are only fake geek boys. Science fiction was invented by a woman.

Specifically a teenage girl. You know, someone who would be a part of the demographic that some of these boys are violently rejecting.

Isaac Asimov.

yo mary shelley wrote frankenstein in 1818 and isaac asimov was born in 1920 so you kinda get my point

If you want to push it back even further Margaret Cavendish, the duchess of Newcastle (1623-1673) wrote The Blazing World in 1666, about a young woman who discovers a Utopian world that can only be accessed via the North Pole - oft credited as one of the first scifi novels

Women have always been at the forefront of literature, the first novel (what we would consider a novel in modern terms) was written by a woman (Lady Muraskai’s the Tale of Genji in the early 1000s) take your snide “Isaac Asimov” reblogs and stick it

even in terms of male scifi authors, asimov was predated by Jules Verne, HG Wells, George Orwell, you could have even cited Poe or Jonathan Swift has a case but Asimov?

PbbBFFTTBBBTBTTBBTBTTT so desperate to discredit the idea of Mary Shelly as the mother of modern science fiction you didn’t even do a frickin google search For Shame

And if you want to go back even further, the first named, identified author in history was Enheduanna of Akkad, a Sumerian high priestess.

Kinda funny, considering this Isaac Asimov quote on the subject:

Mary Shelley was the first to make use of a new finding of science which she advanced further to a logical extreme, and it is that which makes Frankenstein the first true science fiction story.

Even Isaac Asimov ain’t having none of your shit, not even posthumously.

You know what else was invented by women? Masked vigilantes, the precursor to the modern superhero. Baroness Emma Orczy wrote The Scarlet Pimpernel in 1905. The character would later inspire better known masked vigilantes such as Zorro and Batman.

the first extended prose piece - ie a novel, was not, as many male scholars will shout, Don Quixote (1605) but The Tale of Genji (1008) written by a woman

The first autobiography ever written in English is also attributed to a woman, The Book of Margery Kempe (1430s).

apparently neurodivergent kids just can’t have nice things. we get the fidget cube and fidget spinners to help us focus and neurotypicals turn it into a fad and now they’re getting banned from classrooms bc people who DON’T NORMALLY FIDGET are getting distracted by fidgeting with them.

Fuck You if you got this as a “cool spinny toy!!!” and got it taken away from people who use it to focus.

A neurotypical told me that fidget spinners are “so dumb” and I’m like first of all, they’re not for you so write that down.

My mom works part time in a shop that has recently started selling the spinners. She’s bought me two for myself and one for my friend, but she says all the kids come in looking for them and they go out of stock like SO FAST. I use mine when I’m outside cause it can easily fit into my pocket, or when I’m sitting on the laptop, it stops me picking at the skin on my fingers and making them bleed, it’s also really cool to look at and just listen. Getting side tracked! Anyway, my mom has said she’s told a lot of parents buying the spinners for their kids that they’re not designed as a toy and are for people with Autism, ADHD etc to help them concentrate and most of them don’t know that’s what they’re for and thought they were just a fad like loom bands. I don’t know if educating people on what they’re for would make a massive amount of difference but if it stops a few parents just randomly buying their kid the latest fad on a whim then it’s worth the few seconds it would take.

No thing is loads and loads of kids fidget, doesn't matter what they're diagnosed with. Nail biting, hair fiddling, knee shaking etc. It's not the kids fault, are people legit saying fuck you to the kids who bought this? What do you want them to do? Decidedly not buy a product that CAN be used as a toy, and is advertised as one on the regular? Of course they're gonna get banned, marketers are selling them as a fad. They're light up, glow in the dark, patterned, etc.
