the hunger games: peeta gives katniss bread as a way of extending humanity to her at her lowest moments, and it is horrifying that peeta’s mother is so willing to deny a child something as simple as bread yet be willing to feed it to their pig, but in a world where the poor are literally starved to death, the wealthy will exploit even the smallest amount of power over them. the denial of bread to katniss is a formative moment in her life, and the moment when peeta gives her the burned bread to her is what gives her hope for the future as without it she would have literally died. this moment reflects how panem’s society is so deeply divided that something as simple as bread is entirely inaccessible to the poor yet viewed as an unlimited resource by the rich.
