A little while ago, I was asked by @spaghettikiss to do a guest comic for his comic The Creators. How could I say no?

Mikey’s comic - The Creators - is set in a world where one’s imagination literally comes to life. It focuses on a group on teenagers whose drawings manifest themselves in larger-than-life creatures. I liked the idea that perhaps the root of an Old Wive’s Tale or Cryptozoological legends could be a youngster’s creation, so I decided to base my story around that. One Piece introduced me to the real-life myth of the Klaubatermann, and I did some research to fully flesh out what I wanted my version of the creature to look like - and what I wanted it to represent. In this comic, I focus less on the creature itself, and more about how it brings two family members closer together.

PAGE 6 of 6 of “THE FISHERMAN’S SON” by Alex Kazanas who can be found at www.DudeExclamation.Tumblr.com.

Michael’s Notes:  Alex’s final page is iconic.  This whole story has not only been wonderful but explores the Creator universe in a way that I really haven’t.  Please find Alex on Tumblr ( dudeexclamation.tumblr.com ) or instagram ( @dudeexclamation ) and show him love!  Let him know what you thought of his work here and check out his other amazing work.

Alex’s Notes: There he finally is, in the flesh! I wanted this story to be less about the creation, and more about the relationship between a father and his son. It’s common for a parent to not understand their kid, but through patience and strength of bonds, they can eventually come to an understanding. Thanks for reading The Fisherman’s Son! This was a blast to do, and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!

P.S. The fisherman’s pipe has been found.

This is it. Page 6/6 and the finale of Alex Kazanas’ short story: “The Fisherman’s Son”! Please hit us up on Twitter (@spaghettikiss and @ @dudeexclamation) and tell us what you thought! Next week we have a pinup and the cover image for the final chapter (6) of creators volume 1!!!

Well, here it is - the final page of The Fisherman’s Son. You can read it from the beginning starting here: http://creatorscomic.com/page/7. Be sure to read the chapter notes from me and Mikey as well!

I’ve got to give a huge, tremendous thanks to @spaghettikiss for approaching me to do this for The Creators. It really lit a fire under my ass to create more comics, and it gave me a good sense of just how much I can get done in a given amount of time. This is the first of many works from me!!

I had a blast making it, and I hope I managed to convey a concise narrative. Did it tug at your heart strings? Shoot a line to me @dudeexclamation or Mikey @spaghettikiss on twitter and let us know what you thought of it!

Super Art Fight Idol 2015

I’ve got a lot of thoughts and feeling about Super Art Fight Idol, and I’m going to try and express them here. I’ve rewritten this several times over the last hour and a half, so here’s hoping I don’t miss anything. Super Art Fight Idol 2015 was this past weekend, and it meant a lot to me. The last few years I’ve had a lot of things happen in my life, good and bad, but getting to be a part of SAF Idol feels like the culmination of a lot of work.

Mike’s heartfelt write-up about this year’s Super Art Fight Idol is bringing back some nice memories of when I was a freshman 2 years ago.

PAGE 4 of 6 of “THE FISHERMAN’S SON” by Alex Kazanas who can be found at www.DudeExclamation.Tumblr.com.

Michael’s Notes: This is the page that throttles me  There is so much movement and sound in these still, silent images and again he balances the competing styles so well.  I also love the subtlety of the creative power here.  We’ve seen enough of the power throughout the series that watching another kid draw isn’t necessary and this is such a fun and different way to show it.

Alex’s Notes: While the small crew scrambles to get everything under control, the boy and his creation get to work behind the scenes. The crashing waves were the most fun part of this page, personally. I also chose to not include sound effects here- seems more dramatic that way. Note the fisherman’s pipe.

This is my favorite of Alex’s pages for his guest comic. Just a silent visceral montage of a ship in a storm. Just beautiful. Www.Creatorscomic.Com @dudeexclamation

Page 4 of 6 of my guest comic is now up. This page was really fun to do because I just kind of let loose with it. I wanted to capture the unpredictability of the storm and I’m very satisfied with the outcome.

PAGE 3 of 6 of “THE FISHERMAN’S SON” by Alex Kazanas who can be found at www.DudeExclamation.Tumblr.com.

Michael’s Notes:  I’m just in love with how Alex’s work toes the line between visceral painting and Saturday Morning Cartoon.

Alex’s Notes: A real seafarer should be able to see a storm coming, but there are probably other supernatural factors at play here. Or perhaps he’s preoccupied with his son? Either way, I’ve always wanted to say “batten down the hatches” and mean it, and this is the closest I’ll probably get.

PAGE 2 of 6 of “THE FISHERMAN’S SON” by Alex Kazanas who can be found at www.DudeExclamation.Tumblr.com.

Michael’s Notes:  I love that Alex really used research in his story.  It’s been an important part of the Creators so far.  Most of the creations are steeped in folklore, regional or personal culture and to have him dig in in the same fashion has me so excited.  I’m also very into how different his style is.  The Klaubatermann design is friendly and adorable.  It’s a very different direction than I would go but in the best possible way.  I would have made him all sorts of terrifying and what Alex has done works much more successfully for his story.

Alex’s Notes: For the design of the Klaubatermann (an actual kobold spirit in myth), I incorporated elements from the traditional Germanic myth - it’s short stature, raincoat and caulking hammer - as well as the reptilian Kobold species from Dungeons and Dragons. A kobold in Germanic folklore, is just another term for spirit that inhabits a domicile, but I thought it’d be more interesting to make it look more crocodilian/aquatic.

Page 2!! Readers of One Piece might already be familiar with the Klaubatermann, but it’s an honest-to-goodness Germanic myth!

Chapter 5 of THE CREATORS has ENDED!  Chapter 6, which will be the final chapter of volume 1 (I just started work on volume 2) starts Thursday, November 5th.  Until then I have some very special comic to expand the Creators Universe for you.  Above is the cover page for a short comic story, “The Fisherman’s Son” by ALEX KAZANAS (@dudeexclamation) .  Alex is another fellow SUPER ART FIGHTER and has performed under the characters, The Dudeler and Captain Salsa Verde. You can see Alex’s work on Instagram: @DudeExclamation and on Tumblr: DudeExclamation.tumblr.com . Alex is also one of the main players on the One Piece Podcast at http://onepiecepodcast.com/ .

As you will see in the upcoming pages, Alex has an amazing moody yet cartoony style which lends itself beautifully to the Creators universe.  His story is simple, visceral and deals with interesting fisherman’s mythology that gives the story an ancient feel while setting it squarely in the present day.  Get ready to truly enjoy, “The Fisherman’s Son”

When my pal Michael Bracco (@spaghettikiss) asked if I wanted to do a guest comic for The Creators (@creatorscomic), I jumped at it. Mikey’s built an interesting world that is ripe for expanded universe stories! For the next few weeks, you can tune into www.creatorscomic.com (updated Tuesdays and Thursdays) to see my story unfold! Before you do though, catch up on The Creators by starting at Chapter 1! My guest comic will make more sense if you’ve got the context for the world it’s set in, not to mention Mikey’s story is incredibly riveting and creative as well! Enjoy!!

SPX Comic JamZ ‘15

This year at spx, I was situated with some great buds, so I thought some jam comics were in order. Everyone drew a panel, and a narrative was slowly established. As we went on, I decided to branch out the Jamz to other pals and wonderful artists smattered across the sweet small press horizon.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to what became 2.5 pages of beautiful and (somehow) coherent madness. You’re all superstars. Hope you had fun, and enjoy the outcome.

Will you be at SPX this year?

I didn’t get in this year, so I won’t be exhibiting, but I’ll be walking around most of Saturday/Sunday. Might spend some time hanging out at my friend Ross’s table (89/90), so if I’m around, say hello!

Photos of sketch cards I did at Connecticon. When I don’t have commissions to do, I’ll pound out some sketch cards at the table. There were quite a few awesome guests in attendance this year, so I wanted to show my appreciation towards by offering them sketches, in addition to chewing the fat.

The super cool Samm Levine (Freaks and Geeks, Inglourious Basterds, Selfie) enjoyed my sketch card of his Doug Loves Movies moniker, complete with an actual complaint from an episode (that he totally remembered)! I presented Maurice LaMarche (Pinky and the Brain, The Critic, Futurama) with a sketch card of Orson Welles, and we discussed the late acting genius’s career briefly. Marvelous fellow. I also was able to meet the hilarious and sharp Janet Varney (The Legend of Korra, The Thrilling Adventure Hour, The JV Club Podcast) and give her a sketch card of one of her recurring Thrilling Adventure Hour characters, Ginny West. She was also gracious enough to deliver an older sketch card I did of Sparks Nevada to Marc Evan Jackson. She was such a sweetheart. I didn’t think it was possible for a weekend to be made up of so many highlights. As an artist and a fan, I was elated.

Here are photos of most of the commissions I knocked out this weekend at Connecticon. CTCon is hands down one of my favorite shows. Everyone is so nice, and I am constantly drawing stuff for people! It makes me happy to see others happy with the work I’ve done.

Ryan McPartlin and Sarah Lancaster’s agent ended up commissioning me for sketch cards for the two of them, which was surreal and awesome at the same time.
