Freshman year of college I was in a philosophy class and I was giving some sort of group presentation. The prof asked my group “what do you think is your purpose in life?” And none of them really had an answer while I just said “to make the world a better place for those who come after us” because in my mind that’s just the obvious answer. The prof looked kind of taken aback that I just had an answer on the ready and was like “Why? What’s your motivation?”

In that moment I realized I was in front of a lecture hall of privileged students. I was surrounded by people who didn’t know poverty or desperation like I had. I clawed my way here on scholarships while they were legacy kids or trust fund babies. In that moment it clicked in my head that there’s this level of empathy that you can only gain when you have absolutely nothing to lose. A level of empathy that only the impoverished have. A level of empathy that screams out that you have to fight to make things better even if it doesn’t benefit you. It’s a concept that you can only really grasp when you have nothing to lose and the kids before me hadn’t known that pain. They hadn’t developed that kind of empathy.

My only answer that I could give the prof was “Why wouldn’t I?”

A level of empathy that screams out that you have to fight to make things better even if it doesn’t benefit you.

all the angry rich people in the notes:

also to all the people who are arguing that class privilege has nothing to do with empathy, studies show that richer people have less empathy

i know u dont like to listen to us commoners but… lmao

Hey my dear fellow studyblrs! My cousin recently entered this scholarship and she made it to the finalist. I would appreciate it if you help support her by LIKING her essay. She worked really hard on it. Thank you so much in advance. @theorganisedstudent  Please help ^.^

Vote by scrolling all the way to the bottom of the page and press the like button.

SPOILER The essay can be emotional and her friends’ comments were pretty funny.
[[♥ ♥  I really want to thank @academla for being willing to help. She’s such a sweetie. She made the quote “We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone” come into reality for me.♥ ♥]]

How to: stop procrastination. 5 tips that might help you battle the good old procrastination problem.

 1) distraction box  find a box or a shelf to store the things that tend to distract you (especially those with internet). For me that is cellphone and ipad. I sometimes set a time limit for when I can “open” the box again and thus stopping the cellphone and other things to “steal” time from the studies.

 2) tidy room/desk In general my room is always messy(cant seem to learn how to put clothes back into the closet) and my no. 1 procrastination activity is to clean my room. By keeping things in order, I eliminate that favorite procrastination activity.

 3) SelfControl is an app for os x that makes it possible to block web pages for a certain amount of time. This helps to make you more aware of how much you use internet as a source of distraction, and at the same time allow you to have working internet for those scientific pages that you actually need. ( http://selfcontrolapp.com/ )

4) Pomodoro method I sometimes use the pomodoro method, and by adding the extension to my browser, I can easily set the timer and keep track of when I should take breaks ect. ( http://pomodorotechnique.com/ )

5) Planning: By making a list of things that need to be done you get an overview and a source of motivation. This can also provide you with a more clear view of how much you actually manage to do, and can give you a sense of accomplishment.
