hello it’s been quite a year and i’m here to do my annual update lol, cleaned up the main page a little and stuff.

last year i was hired to be a storyboard artist on young justice, and i’m sure many of you know one of my career goals as a younger 20something was to work on a dc comic project. silly me thought it would definitely be comics, but life finds a way and instead i worked on a cartoon! i was also lucky enough to be asked to freelance on deathstroke: knights & dragons last year so that was actually my first foray in a dc project - but young justice really brought it home for me as they were characters i had been dreaming about drawing in a professional capacity for almost ten years.

i was also asked to freelance boards on star wars: galaxy of adventures season two. i was lucky enough to be handed the kylo ren episode. this was another career goal and one that i never dreamed i could achieve as, even though i’ve interviewed twice for lucasfilm, they were based in SF and i couldn’t justify the move.

i am currently boarding at titmouse on an adult geared animated show, definitely something i haven’t worked on before so it’s been very exciting and the talent in the crew is enormous.

i also started therapy this year. 2019 was a hell of a year and 2020 was one too, and i felt that getting professional mental help would help me sort out my anxieties and insecurities. i’ve learned a lot about myself as well as unpacked the root of some of my deeper issues, and hope to better myself as the days go on.

anyway i hope you all are doing well, i am currently quarantining with my fiance, dog, and kitties. we are all well and hope that next year things will be better.

I also forgot to mention here- but I started a new job this week at Powerhouse Animation Studio, the producers of Netflix Castlevania! I’m working on an as of yet unannounced show- it’s very exciting! It’s my first official board artist job after months of freelancing and I feel like...I finally...made it to the precarious midpoint of the ladder...then there’s lots more of the ladder to climb, but I made it to a save point, at least. LOL

U DONT HAVE 2 ANSWER if it’s too private, but how long after you graduated did it take before you got a storyboarding job? I’m a year or two out and still looking 4 the golden egg but eyeballing medical field bc $$ and waiting around are taking their tolls. And I feel like I remember a while ago you also were in the “I guess I have to do something else besides art” rut?

Hello!! I hope you don’t mind me publishing this bc I think it would be helpful to a lot of people (if you do please tell me and I will delete!).

I graduated college in 2011 and did a bunch of freelance. I was lucky enough to have fairly consistent and variable work - I did character designs for a mobile dating game, comic book covers for Boom, and comic covers and pages for a webcomic. All of these jobs were paying, but the problem is they weren’t paying enough. And after doing this for about four years I was 25, tired, and having a quarter life crisis.

So I moved back to California in 2015. I waffled around that year trying to get my life together - I considered going back to school to become a pathologist’s assistant- but that would require six more years of schooling. I learned about storyboarding from friends who were in the industry, and it seemed like a way to transfer my sequential art skills. So I figured I could take some classes at Concept Design Academy and see where that takes me. So that was my 2016- lots and lots of classes. I was lucky enough that I loved it, and was able to polish up my skills and produce a portfolio decent enough to be hired at the end of the year. I started my first job at Marvel in January of 2017.

It is now February of 2019 and two studios and a promotion later I have never been more content in a job field. I’m excited to go to work every day and even though sometimes it’s scary - I have definitely been scolded, admonished, and told to Do Better- I take it all as a learning experience. I got to work on She-Ra, and board interactions between two of my favorite characters. I am currently freelancing on a dream project, something that’s been on my bucket list since college, and it’s funny how life comes around like that.

So I guess TL;DR it is definitely not too late. I understand the pressure of finding a career, and if you think you’ll be happier in the medical field, go for it! Art jobs are pretty hard to come by and even harder to keep. If you have the means to attend classes, there are online courses for animation at Schoolism and CGMA. If you are in Los Angeles or are willing to travel, I highly recommend Concept Design Academy. If you have any other questions please feel free to email me (ehu1939@gmail), I check that way more often than tumblr. :)

i use....storyboard pro now bc.. i just doodle in the margins of freelance/work HAHA... but it’s just a regular square hard brush. i doodle in photoshop occasionally and try to replicate the same square brush.
