Aang grinned back her. He understood the implications behind her words. That he had not been having many good days lately. That she knew he had not been having many good days. That she cared very deeply that today had been nice to him. 

That she loved him enough to simply be happy when he felt happy. 

It was a spark of realization of a fact he had already long known and it made him push forward to kiss her again. He try to explain to her without words he returned the feeling. 

     “It was a good day,” he agreed, putting his temple against her’s. “And I think the temple restoration is looking pretty good. 

    “–Do you want to come see it?”

The smile on his face was enough to melt her heart and she smiled back against his lips when he kissed her again.

She kept her arms locked around his neck. "Of course I wanna see it. I can't wait, sweetie."

Aang had been telling her about his day, how the meeting with the Acolytes had gone well. He was excited that Jingbo finally made it through a meditation session without falling asleep.

And he just looked so happy - something he hadn't looked for the past few weeks. Whether it was dealing with grumpy Earth Kingdom officials or resolving some small conflict that really even didn't require his attention. He had been stressed and tired and seeing the grin on his face and sparkle in his eyes as he was rambling to her about his day gave Katara a warm feeling inside, and so she kissed him mis-sentence.

She felt his arms wrap around her waist and she returned the embrace around his neck. When they parted, she answered his question. "You're just cute, that's all," she laughed. "I'm glad that you finally had a good day."

When someone says Kataang is abusive

Through the Flames of War (closed starter for water-tribe-katara)

There were few times that the young man could venture out into the fire nation capitol following his public declaration against the war. He gave his men the order to turn against him to keep them safe. The fire nation festival was one of those times though. Partially due to the masks that were a common trinket of the times. He didn’t like the idea of glorifying a war, but couldn’t change that, so he allowed himself to enjoy the festival as just that. He himself had to rely on a mask, especially with the cut across his left eye that is marked on his wanted poster. He walked over to the firebending display as he enjoyed when fire was used for anything besides destruction. As he watched, he noticed three people he never seen before approaching the same display.

Katara wanted nothing more than to get out of that place.

They had agreed to stop by the festival for a bit, but even with the masks they donned to hide their identities, she was still nervous.

However, the display of firebending they had come up too was neat, and she could tell Aang was thoroughly enjoying it. Katara shifted a bit, and accidentally bumped into the man beside her.

“Oh, sorry about that,” she said.

The young man had kept his attention on the firebending display until he felt a shoulder brush against his arm. Turning to face the masked young woman, he waves off the contact. “It’s quite alright. It’s hard to get some space during the festival after all.” The young man laughs it off. He was glad that the contact didn’t disrupt his mask. He turned his attention to the disguised Aang.

“Your friend seems like he’s enjoying it. You guys from off the capital?” He inquires briefly. He didn’t have all that much interest in the display, but didn’t want to arouse suspicions by simply arriving at the festival to grab a couple of supplies under the relaxed atmosphere. He could tend to that later.

Katara’s breath hitched and she froze for a moment. While he seemed harmless enough, she knew better than to trust someone at a Fire Nation festival with their real identities.

“Oh, uh, no, not the capital. We’re,uh, from the colonies! In the Earth Kingdom.”
