Linger by the Cranberries but you’re out in the woods, all alone. You were smart (sort of) and managed to build a lean-to to keep you sheltered from the sudden storm, but now you’re stuck here… Watching the fire crackle and hiss.

You have your radio on in case of forest fire (though you don’t quite understand how to use it, and you’re not sure you’d know if there was an emergency broadcast). It makes a delicate hissing noise that you can hardly hear over the wind and rain. Endless white noise.

Then, out of nowhere, a song. A song that’s familiar in an unfamiliar way– you know it, but couldn’t sing it. Hear the words but can’t understand them.

You lean back. Close your eyes. And wonder if anyone’s missing you.

  • Brian Fuller’s original 2007 magical realism romantic comedy with a dash of morbidity (after all, this is Brian Fuller we’re talking abt) & fairytale elements
  • as this review describes: “Characters & plot like Lemony Snicket, sets like Tim Burton, shots like Wes Anderson, rapid witty dialogue like Gilmore Girls, and costumes like uh, frickin’ magic.”
  • everything is Super Saturated All The Time and the costume design is literally flawless
  • starring: asexual bakery man, very tall very kind and himbo-adjacent, has low-level necromantic powers named Ned
  • Ned is, for convoluted reasons, the accomplice of a film noir detective named after a fish (Emerson Cod) who looks like a hardass but secretly loves pop-up books and knitting
  • Ned the bakery man is a Piemaker and works in and owns a building that looks like this
  • (there are novelty cherry lighting fixtures)
  • he has a dog, who is undead, bc aforementioned necromantic bakery boy has the unique skill of being able to touch dead things and bring them back to life
  • he and Emerson Cod touch murder victims, ask them who killed them, and then collect the reward. easy get-money-quick-scheme, UNTIL
  • Ned’s childhood crush and my life’s icon, Charlotte “Chuck” Charles, gets murdered on a cruise
  • he touches her once (ONCE) and is never able to touch her again, lest his necromantic powers zap her back to death. hence:
  • contact-free romance ensues.
  •  I highly recommend the show for: asexuals, demisexuals, dog people, people who like pie, fashion & costume design enthusiasts, anyone who’s a fan of film noir, people who like pie and dogs and mermaids
  • literally this show is my absolute all time favorite PLEASE watch it
  • you can watch both seasons for free here
  • literally if you’ve ever cared for my opinion at all please watch at least the first episode i beg of u

Also, recommend for musical theater nerds due to: Ellen Greene, Kristen Chenoweth, Raúl Esparza (who all sing in the show).

People who like rocks see cool rocks everywhere. People who like birds see interesting birds everywhere. The tree on your yard could be an exceptional specimen. The world around you could be amazing and magical, but you aren’t enough of a nerd to see it.

I gave my mum Alexandra Horowitz’s On Looking: Eleven Walks Through Expert Eyes for her birthday this year, it’s a book that revolves around this idea: the author invites 11 specialists in different things to walk around a boring city block with her one after the other so they can point out to her the things they see, that she doesn’t notice. There’s an expert in typography talking about what the variety of fonts on urban signs can tell you about the city’s history, an entomologist pointing out all the urban insects no one pays attention to, a geologist, a sound engineer…

See this is what I mean by “there are more wonders in this world than you can ever dream of and all you need to do is listen to its stories and see it’s magic. ”

Hey students, here’s a pro tip: do not write an email to your prof while you’re seriously sick.

Signed, a person who somehow came up with “dear hello, I am sick and not sure if I’ll be alive to come tomorrow and I’m sorry, best slutantions, [name]”.

I mean, if someone wrote that to me, I’d probably believe they were sick.

Hey, friends. The passion project I’ve been working on with my frirend Khai for the past two years is finally almost done and now on @kickstarter: TRUE WAR STORIES, an anthology of soldiers’ stories from Vietnam to today. I worked with 15 men and women from the Army, Marines, Navy and Air Force to bring to life their stories of deployment — free of framing narrative or political angle, just the sort of stories soldiers tell each other — with some of the brightest artists in comics. The Kickstarter has a big first-day discount so please check it out (there’s lots of art posted, like the spread below!) and maybe buy a copy for yourself or as a holiday gift for a friend or relative!

i’m so puzzled by harry potter fics where hermione’s doing the majority of the childcare instead of ron. hermione is ruthless and driven and a single child and boy does she get easily frustrated with people being stupid or weak. ron’s from a big family with an attentive mom and he’s an extremely sweet and supportive guy. if i was going to pick a full-time parent i’d go with ron every time.

like ron is the parent that teaches you to read and write and cook and ride a broom and share your toys and make up with your friends. hermione is the parent that picks your schoolyard bully up by the scruff and throws him over the fence and gets banned from all future PTA meetings.

The fun thing about lots of folk ballads just being multiple versions of the same story is that you start to see certain characters waltz through the lyrics over and over again - so that inspired me to do some little character designs based on this cast of cruel crooks and hapless victims 🎶

Many years ago I wrote an all-purpose folk song, and tried to get as many tropes as possible into one song...
