My mom used to talk about this scene a lot when I was growing up. As an adult, I realize now it was because I was too much like Allison Reynolds on the left and her definition of what wanted me to be Allison Reynolds on the right. “Look how much prettier she is” she would tell me. “She ends up with the jock after she puts some effort in herself.” I’m finally grappling with how toxic that was to my impressionable 16-year-old self where I was convinced no one would left me unless I looked like the conventional Allison Reynolds on the right when what should really matter is how I felt on the inside.
