I like the W.A.S. scale for rating anime. It stands for Weeb Ass Shit, and you rate each of those things on a 10 point scale.

So like, a series that requires extensive knowledge of japanese culture, or one that relies on the audience already being very familiar with the media tropes that it’s parodying, would have a high Weeb score while one that any 10-year old american would totally understand would have a low Weeb score.

The Ass column is for how much gratuitous nudity or attempts at titilation there is, with pure and innocent things like most ghibli films getting really low numbers, things like Bakemonogatari or Kill la Kill ending up in the middle of the scale, and borderline hentai at the top.

And finally, the Shit column covers things that are just fucking stupid, or poorly implemented. Low numbers indicate a series that is extremely well written and has a lot of good ideas, higher values come from plot holes, idiot plots, authors shoehorning in some incredibly nonsensical philosophy, etc.

Some people don’t mind the weeb nonsense at all, so they only have to look at the other two categories. Some people have very little tolerance for ass, even in a series that is otherwise of high quality. Some people decide based on a combined score, like they can tolerate more ass if the shit level is really low or vice versa but refuse to deal with both at the same time.

I literally was looking for someone in the notes to mention the Weeb Ass Shit scale, bless you for explaining! Also I feel like even if the person you’re recommending things to is unfamiliar with this scale, it’s a helpful tool to help you break down and analyze different elements of the show.

look here's the thing:

"hey there demons, it's me, ya boi" "i've connected the dots/ you didn't connect shit" "rock n roll buckaroo!" "we're here for the cult stuff, we saw an ad on craigslist" "(wheeze)"

those Iconic Quotes? all from buzzfeed unsolved!! when has watcher/ghost files, with their stylized graphics and higher production value, ever churned out this kind of banter!!

If y’all don’t know, Lilly Wachowski is one of the Wachowski sisters, the women who directed and wrote the matrix, the movie that the whole “red pill, blue pill” thing comes from. Both sisters are trans women.

Ok so if anyone is curious this did happen. It was in Portland, Oregon. The dead guy, last name Magnuson, age 55, screamed epithets at this UPS driver, Warren, age 41. Warren stopped and told him off. Magnuson then decided to hit Warren. Oregon has no Duty to Retreat, so Warren was within his rights to hit him back. He ht him once in the face and he fell and hit his head on a sidewalk, which is probably what actually killed him. All that to say, no charges filed and good fucking riddance.

things the watcher guys could do that aren't CREATING A WHOLE ASS NEW STREAMING SERVICE THAT THE WORLD DOESN'T NEED:

  • put seasons of their shows out on DVDs. bonus if you can add behind the scenes content or even commentary that would then only exist on those dvds, so people have more reason to buy (leave the originals up as they are, though).
  • put their shows on already existing streaming services, preferably ones that are already popular rather than really niche ones, though I do understand that maybe getting your stuff on a popular streaming service is harder than on a less popular one so i wouldn't flame them for that.
  • idk sell more and better merch? like I've looked at their merch before and none of it seemed all that nice to me even though I am an impulse buyer and always wanted everything by the people I'm a fan of (you wouldnt believe the amount of clothes i have that are straight up youtuber merch. we're talking more than 2/3rds of my wardrobe). probably would have actually bought some of watcher's merch if it was better. the only thing I was ever tempted to buy was the professor plushie.
  • also lowering the price of good merch even marginally (without making it not-profitable) = more people can afford it = you earn more.
  • create a new show that isn't already available for free and put that on your patreon or something. give your viewers who can afford it a better reason to pay you.

obviously people steal ideas from other people it's one of the oldest tricks in the book but it still always surprises me to learn that people plagiarise things because my introduction to the concept was basically being told that if i ever plagiarised anything i would be executed by firing squad and my head would be removed and displayed on a spike outside the walls of the hallowed academic institution i was attending as a warning to others
