Why the SPN mixtape scene from 12x19 is screenwriting gold, and should be taught to the next generations of screenwriters everywhere - analysis

20 seconds. Two lines of dialogue, three gestures, a couple more camera angles. Episode 19, season 12 of a genre TV show “Supernatural”. A single strike of screenwriting and cinematic genius. The mixtape scene.

Robert Berens and Meredith Glynn, I bow before you.

This scene should be used as an example for future screenwriters how you can put maximum of meaning into minimal time and dialogue. Should be analyzed and taught at universities everywhere, how to achieve the most using the least. How to write for TV, where you only have less than an hour to built something spectacular.

WOW.

Let’s just peel off all the layers of these 20 seconds of footage and these 13 words. 13 WORDS.

(Cas knocks, Dean doesn’t say anything. Cas opens the door, apologizes for disturbing Dean in his room, and then takes a cassette tape out of his left inside coat pocket, and puts it on the desk, while tapping the label on it that says “Deans (sic!) top 13 Zepp traxx”.)

Cas: Um, I just wanted to return this.
Dean: It’s a gift. You keep those.

13 tracks. 13 words. The future. So number thirteen is important for the future. I mean, are you trying to tell us something here, writers?

(Dean takes the tape, oustreches his arm, and gives it back to Cas. We see Cas’ hand grabbing the tape, and taking it back.)

That tiny scene is ENORMOUS from the perspective of the narrative and the characterization. Let’s see what we can get out of it. (Prepare yourself: it’s gonna be long. Damn, how much meta can you write based on 20 seconds of television and two lines of dialogue?) (Hint: A lot.)

I have to assume that Ramble On and Travelling Riverside Blues are two of them - because of 4x18 - but I’m really curious about the others

“Welcome home”  Dean says as they are in the middle of nowhere and pulls Cas into his arms.

#the romance of saying welcome home when home is simply the nearness of one person to another…….. #13.06  (via @samdyke)

do you think Jensen is gonna rewatch the show and point at every moment Cas and Dean are in the same room and cheer “Dean is in love with Cas here”? because if you don’t, you are wrong.

It is prob happening now. Cuz Jensen looked snowed in the other day, so Danneel and Jensen are staying in and watching the 8 hr Destiel cut. And Danneel saying Misha is so cute and Jensen saying ikr. And they are doing commentary on the whole romance unfolding and like things Jensen forgot or that Danneel noticed. And Danneel is like yeah I remember you used that look on me.

Not me thinking about Jensen and Misha watching 8hr destiel cut together over FaceTime and commenting on every little thing 👀

I don’t have a tumblr account and I mainly came here to see the content about SPN so this might be a little pointless until someone else can back me up: I can tell you right now that “rogue translators” only exist in fan dubs. If the CW sends out scripts to translators for dubs and CC then there’s be mayhem if those teams just “went rogue” with something like a love confession being reciprocated. As someone who deals with clients sending multiple drafts of scripts and leaving us next to no time to do our work, guaranteed this was the CW sending a late copy that removed the reciprocation from Dean but the translators and dubbing had already been done. Misha won’t know anything about this side of the business so the CW giving him this excuse to try and get rid of the Spanish dub isn’t a huge surprise. But no way would someone employed to translate one of the biggest moments on one of the biggest network TV shows “go rogue” with it. Someone somewhere has an official draft of a script from the CW writers where Dean reciprocates Cas’ love. So trust me, it’s canon.

oh believe me i know it's canon, but holy hell is this interesting. somebody back this up i am Intrigued
