Sharing A Bed Starters

"Did you have a nightmare?"
"I had a nightmare."
"There's plenty of room for the both of us."
"There is not enough room here for both of us."
"It's cold. We should try to conserve body heat."
"You're not even going to notice because you'll be asleep!"
"We've only got the one bed between the two of us."
"Quit stealing the covers."
"Quit kicking me."
"It's better than sleeping on the floor."
"It's either this or you sleep in the tub."
"Alright. Get up here."
"We're sleeping in the same bed, not together!"
"Please go to bed."
"Sleep is for the weak."
"Do you have any idea what time it is?"
"Dutch oven!"
"You sleep on top of the sheets."
"I'll sleep on top of the sheets."
"I'm scared. Can I sleep with you?"
"You're scared? You can come sleep with me, I guess."
"I have to sleep closer to the door."
"I can't sleep this close to the door."
"Stop getting up so early. You always wake me up."
"Stop staying up so late. I can never fall asleep."
"We can cuddle."
"Just don't try cuddling me or anything."

the question stops her cold. it’s clear that there will be no brushing off his words, no avoiding an argument or a discussion. that’s been her solution for so long that elizabeth isn’t quite sure how to address any of their problems head-on anymore. every inch of her is longing to escape, to avoid this exchange at all costs. but he deserves more than that. he deserves better.

she dips her head, lips parted as she tries to come up with some sort of explanation. she could deny it, but that would just be another lie, and elizabeth doesn’t think she can handle seeing the disappointment that would undoubtedly linger in his eyes.
❛ i was trying to protect you, ❜ she says finally, her words shaking. she feels vulnerable in a way that she hasn’t felt in a very long time, and it’s unsettling. ❛ the truth would have hurt you. i couldn’t bear the idea of causing you pain. ❜

silence threatens to swallow the quiet omission as soon as it escapes elizabeth’s lips, traveling softly through the still air. will can see the tension in her shoulders even from where he stands, knows that despite how strong she always seems, at this moment she is a mere feather’s touch from collapsing within herself -- a supernova in the making. will knows all too well how the aftermath of that internal explosion could devastate them all. it’s the only thing keeping him where he is, keeping him from giving into his anger and demanding explanation. her voice is so brittle that it makes his heart constrict in his chest, the need to comfort her proving difficult to ignore. but had he not done what was best for her from the beginning? had he not attempted to keep her safe and happy? had he simply not loved her enough for anything to matter at all?

a soft sigh escapes him as the tension in his stance wanes, leaving a sense of exhaustion in its wake. all this fighting...all this deceit. for what? the two of them were mere shells of what they had been not months before. had it really been such a short time ago when he’d first told her he’d loved her, when they’d nearly been wed? his eyes fall from her frame down to the boards beneath his feet, the only solid thing he could rely on at the moment. even those boards rocked back and forth, unsteadily, above the water.

❛ and your silence was meant to do what, exactly? comfort me? keep me from feeling pain at your sudden distance? without trust, we have nothing, elizabeth. we have nothing at all. ❜

could roleplayers who use double small text ( like this ) reblog this post if they are alright with their partners changing the font size of their reply to regular small when reblogging and replying? i know there are a lot of people who have trouble reading tiny text, so it’d be great to know who are okay with their partner editing the formatting for accessibility.
