"Oh my -- " she should probably close her eyes, and Peggy turned to look away and preserve modesty, but couldn't help the little flicker of her gaze back toward him.

Steve made a surprised sound, covering himself with his hands, and looking for something better to use. “I, uh - Peggy!” he said, trying not to be awkward. Probably failing. Why was there nothing to cover himself with? He finally snatched a pair of boxers, pulling them on quickly. “What are you doing here? I wasn’t - expecting anybody.”

“I should suppose not,” she replied primly, trying to ignore the flush that had sent heat all through her cheeks and to her ears. “I called several times, and when the operator said that the line was busy each one I thought I’d better...come and make certain everything was alright.”

Peggy glanced back at Steve again to find that he’d found something to cover up with, letting her eyes settle on him fully when she knew that he was covered for certain.

“So...” she cleared her throat, “is...everything alright then?”

They’d been expensive, and the part of her that still remembered being hungry and threadbare in the thirties recoiled at the thought of Steve ripping them. It was only a small part, though, and Peggy put pressure at his shoulder, squeezing to let him know that it was all right.

“If you must,” her breath puffed against his ear as she teased the lobe with her teeth. She wanted all of him right then, so what was a pair of knickers? “I promise I won’t get mad...” her voice hitched, and she could feel him hot and heavy already through the fabric of his trousers, her body thrumming with need.

A spear of heat pressed between her legs, intensified by the insistent press of Steve’s tongue past her lips and into her mouth. She considered that if Howard or Jarvis found them, it wouldn’t matter all that much. Jarvis would be embarrassed, of course. Horribly so.

She would be too if she found him like this in the closet with Ana, to be fair.

Howard would probably laugh and go about either embarrassing them, or he would quickly close the door again and pretend he’d seen nothing. She certainly hoped for the latter.

“Good...” she breathed heavy as Steve reached between them to undo his belt, the dull clink of metal and leather was almost deafening in the close quarters of the closet. The fur collar of one of the ladies’ coats tickled at Peggy’s nose, and she turned her face aside to give the quietest sneeze she could muster, jerking with it. “I don’t...want to either.”

She gave a languid smile, doing her best to move against Steve, but the wall had her pinned still, and it was quite challenging, she was finding, to move at all except when he allowed her to.

Steve’s expression was unavailable in the darkness, but his breath brushed against her cheeks, and Peggy felt safe.

“Are you sure we should be doing this?” Steve panted, even as he worked her dress up to her hips, before kissing her deeply. He had her pressed up against the back of the closet, and he grabbed her legs to pull them around his waist. He pressed up against her, wanting to feel as much of her as he could. “Think we’ll be missed?”@carterofshield

“I’m...I’m sure we will be,” Peggy couldn’t quite bite back her giggle as the small space left between them grew hotter by the moment.

Steve’s hands were confident, steady, if urgent, and she tilted her head back in the stuffy confines of the closet, certain that her hair would be a mess after this. It had caught against the tooth of a wool coat. The bitter scent of the fabric was thick in her nose. At the moment she couldn’t care less.

Peggy’s mouth occupied itself with Steve’s again as he found her purchase against the back of the closet, and there was a dull thump as he hiked her up onto his hips, her stomach muscles complaining at the unusual strain to their natural state of being.

She ignored that too, focused on the way that his breath stole hers, her teeth catching at the edge of his jaw as she wrapped her legs about his waist and scraped them carefully along his throat, kissing the crook of neck and shoulder beneath the loosened collar of his good shirt. God knew she would have to clean it for him later, but that didn’t particularly bother her for the moment either.

One hand had come to bury itself at the base of Steve’s scalp, her fingers tangling in the blond strands of his hair, the other clinging desperately to his shoulder, doing everything in its power to keep her close to him and upright.

“Are you saying...you want to go back?”

“Of course I’m frustrated,” she removed the towel completely, flapping it in the air a moment before her knuckles made solid connection with her jutted out hip. “We lost a lot of men today.”

The General would likely hold her partially responsible, and of course she was, after all. Peggy sighed, deflating just a little.

“All we seem to do is take two steps forward and one step back again.”

“I know,” Steve replied gently, standing up. He was still distinctly damp, but he ignored the water clinging to him in favor of talking to Peggy about this. “But I couldn’t help but wonder why it led to this.” He noticed her shoulders drooping, and reached up to put a hand on her shoulder, squeezing gently. He knew exactly what she was thinking. “I’ll tell Philips what happened. It wasn’t your fault. "It’s still one step forward. It’s a lot of work, I won’t lie. But we’re at least making progress.”

Philips wouldn’t listen. Peggy rolled her lips inward, tasting the chalk of her lipstick, forgetting to move away from Steve as his hand squeezed at her shoulder.

“It was my fault, Steve,” she looked up at him. She still half-expected to look down at his previous self, skinny and determined. “I was in charge, and it is my fault that we lost them.” She’d made a bad decision.

“And most of them were just boys.” She thought of her brother, and how the last time she had seen him he had been mad at her for choosing to listen to her fiancé’s desire to keep her at home. She wondered how many other sisters would weep in the next few days when they received word that their brothers had been killed in action.

Her arms ached a little with the fore of drying Steve’s hair. They’d mucked it all up, and there would be mud in every crevice for the next week, and it only seemed to gunk up on the towel that she was using and Peggy couldn’t help but clench her jaw in annoyance at the entire situation.

She’d always had to do something with her hands when something was bothering her.

Peggy let out a sigh of distress at the situation, glancing down at Steve as she continued to work the towel through his hair and then she paused, heart fluttering. Blue eyes stared up at her, and the young agent blinked rapidly, feeling her cheeks heat as she suddenly realised what she was doing.

He was a grown man, completely capable of drying his own hair, as she recalled he had said to her before when she had come at him in a flurry, and Peggy cleared her throat, embarrassment growing.

Water still clung to his eyelashes, and his pale face had come mostly clean in the rain, though his uniform still had mud crusted around the edges. Peggy took the towel away slowly, pursing her lips.

“What?” she finally asked, on the defensive.

Steve held his head still as she worked, deciding to make this as easy as possible for her. She seemed almost angry with the amount of dirt and water on him, and it was kind of endearing (not that he would tell her that). He decided not to say anything, noticing the intense focus that she had when going about most things. Best not to break that. Plus, it gave him a chance to watch her, with the excuse of her being right in front of him. When she stopped, he shifted so he was more at the edge of his seat and looked up at her. “Nothing, nothing,” he assured her, smiling a little. “You just seem a little… frustrated, is all.”

Steve had insisted to Peggy that he could dry his hair himself, but she had also insisted on doing it, so he decided it was easier to let her. He looked up at her as she worked, smiling a little bit when he saw how focused she was.
