Do you have any thoughts about how the language we use impacts perceptions of people in regards to their weight, appearance, etc?

Avatar

oh yeah absolutely. everyone learns how to interact with their own bodies by listening and watching the people in their lives. the media, art, strangers, advertisements, all of it affects the language we use about our bodies and the bodies of others. reclaiming the word ‘fat’ has not only been empowering but aggressively using it povelively or neutrally will hopefully make a dent in destigmatizing the word entirely.

You know if you ate less you would have more money for emergency expenses and fewer migraines. Win-win-win. Just saying.

i hope disability and poverty never touch your life because then you’ll have to know what an unforgivably cruel person you are and i don’t think you could handle that type of growth.

if your feminism only extends to women of a certain weight, it is bad and you should feel bad. if your feminism hinges upon someone’s health, it is bad and you should feel bad. this has been a reminder.

hey friends! reminder that if your respect for another person hinges on the way their body looks or their health status, you suck!

I don’t trust people who don’t have any fat friends.

the thin people in the notes doing logical backflips to try and justify why they are not and have never been friendly to a fat person are WILD.

it’s so strange to me that being a fat person who doesn’t actively, constantly voice hatred for themselves or telling a fat person that they don’t have to hate themselves is seen as such an antagonistic statement to some people.

fat? yep. unhealthy? check. ugly? definitely to some people. I may be all of those things but I am still a person deserving of basic human decency and respect. I still deserve to find happiness and live my best life. body size, health status, and perceived beauty are not reasons to treat people like crap. stop pretending that they are just because you want to make yourself feel superior to strangers.

What I say: ‘Health is not determined by body size.’ What people hear: ‘All fat people in every circumstance are more healthy and better than thin people in every conceivable way and also fat people are immortal. All people who aren’t fat must become fat and stay fat at any cost. Exercise is a damnable sin and eating anything but ice cream is forbidden.’

Whats really funny about this is like, if u reverse fat with skinny in the last quote, that’s pretty much what skinny ppl say when they police fat ppl. Just replace “ice cream” with salad, or “good fats,” or the ever generic “healthy food.”

holy shit i never even noticed that nor did that thought cross my mind but you’re EXACTLY right.

it always alarms me the lengths people will go to justify their hatred for fat people.

no one needs approval from anyone to eat what they want or are able, dress how they want, and move their bodies how they want within their ability, nor do they have to justify it to anyone, ESPECIALLY anonymous internet trolls! people getting themselves in enough of a tizzy over a stranger’s body to type out hateful messages or comments to fat people will literally die mad at strangers! for something they have absolutely no say in or control over! doesn’t that suck for fatphobes!?

your feminism isn’t real or good feminism if fat women are not part of it. your feminism isn’t real or good feminism if unhealthy women are not part of it. sorry. i don’t make the rules it is just a fact.

let fat people live in peace. text the awful shit you think about fat people to your mother or someone who is forced to care about your shitty opinions and let fat people uplift each other and like each other’s photos in peace.

ideally, fatphobes would get their shit together and unlearn all the things that make them think any person deserves subhuman treatment BUT i know that’s a lot to ask of the blissfully and willfully ignorant. so instead, why don’t you just shut the fuck up and let fat people live in peace???
