How They Rescued Titanic's Passengers: Carpathia's Wild Dash

In the early hours of April 15th, 1912 the RMS Carpathia's lone wireless operator Harold Cottam picked up his headset for one last listen before turning in for bed. What he heard shocked him to his core; RMS Titanic, the newest liner of the White Star Line, was sinking fast. Carpathia's story as a hero rescue ship is a fascinating one, and this video explores how in the night of the disaster RMS Carpathia rushed to the rescue of RMS Titanic.

The RMS Titanic sank in the early morning hours of 15 April 1912 in the North Atlantic Ocean, four days into her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City

At 11:40 p.m. on 14 April, lookout Frederick Fleet spotted an iceberg immediately ahead of Titanic and alerted the bridge. First Officer William Murdoch ordered the ship to be steered around the obstacle and the engines to be reversed, but it was too late the starboard side of Titanic struck the iceberg, creating a series of holes below the waterline. The hull was not punctured by the iceberg, but rather dented such that the hull’s seams buckled and separated, allowing water to seep in. Five of the ship’s watertight compartments were breached. It soon became clear that the ship was doomed, as she could not survive more than four compartments being flooded. Titanic began sinking bow-first, with water spilling from compartment to compartment as her angle in the water became steeper. Between 2:10 and 2:15 a.m., a little over two and a half hours after Titanic struck the iceberg, her rate of sinking suddenly increased as the boat deck dipped underwater, and the sea poured in through open hatches and grates. As her unsupported stern rose out of the water, exposing the propellers, the ship broke in two main pieces between the second and third funnels, due to the immense forces on the keel. With the bow underwater, and air trapped in the stern, the stern remained afloat and buoyant for a few minutes longer, rising to a nearly vertical angle with hundreds of people still clinging to it, before foundering at 2:20 am.

On April 13th 1912, Titanic’s Marconi wireless system broke down. It’s well known that this resulted in a delay which led to a backlog of messages (made worse by Titanic being in range of Cape Race and having to send many messages to and from other ships). What isn’t so widely known is the fact that when the system broke down, Jack Phillips and Harold Bride completely broke Marconi rules by taking the system apart, identifying the problem and finally managing to fix the system themselves in the early hours of April 14th. If they hadn’t, there’s a good chance the emergency system’s signal may not have been strong enough to reach the Carpathia clearly (if at all) after Titanic collided with the iceberg just a few hours later.

Can’t help adding, it’s so important to me.

After that Phillips, as senior operator, let Bride to sleep and he himself continued working. That is why he already was exhausted when the night 14-15 of April came. But then he also was sending an SOS (and CQD) messages till the very moment the water started to pour into radio room. Afterwards Bride was telling, that Phillips’ exhaustion was the reason why he didn’t do it through the night on the upturned boat B, why he died before Carpathia came - all his life energy was given to his work on the previous day: fixing the system, sending telegrams, sending calls for help in the extreme situation… That is what killed him and also the night in a cold water.

Why don’t people appreciate what a hero Jack Phillips was, FOR CHRIST SAKE?!

Remind Me

It was even darker down here, but once her eyes adjusted she could just make out the silhouette of his profile. She rushed down as fast as she dared, needing to make sure she wasn’t just seeing what she wanted to see.

“Dmitry?”

“Hey,” he croaked. She reached him, kneeling beside him, touching his face. Her eyes adjusted more to see his lips pulling at the corners. His face, though caked in a layer of dust, was, as always, too handsome and smug for his own good. “You okay?”

The question was so ridiculous coming from him she wanted to laugh. “Can you move?”

“I’m a bit stuck,” he said, the sound of metal creaking and fabric shifting.

She could make out jagged masses around them, stone and concrete and steel, the bones of the building exposed. The fact that he hadn’t been crushed— that neither of them had been crushed, really— was probably a miracle. But she probably shouldn’t speak too soon.

APRIL 10-11th 1912 - TITANIC SETS SAIL

Shortly after 12.00 noon, Titanic sets sail from Southampton, beginning her maiden voyage, and heading first for Cherbourg in Normandy, north-western France. Titanic arrives in Cherbourg, with the tender ships SS Nomadic and SS Traffic reaching the ship – anchored in the outer harbour – at 6.35pm. With the newly embarking passengers safely transferred from the tender ships to Titanic (142 1st Class, 30 2nd Class and 102 3rd Class), and with a smaller number disembarking (15 1st Class and 9 2nd Class), at around 8.10pm the ship leaves Cherbourg, headed for Queenstown on the south coast of County Cork, Ireland. At 11.30am, Titanic drops anchor at Roches Point outer anchorage, in Queenstown, County Cork – her final port of call on the maiden journey to New York. With the tender ships PS Ireland and PS America having transported the 123 passengers joining at Queenstown (7 2nd Class and 113 3rd Class) and collecting 7 passengers who were disembarking, at 1.30pm Titanic raises anchor and sets off to cross the Atlantic for America.

Here is the secret to fandom:

Give zero fucks about what anyone else is doing.

Seriously.  I mean it.  Because inevitably you will love something that no one else loves.  Or you will love something that everyone loves and people will shit all over it because it’s “so trite and unimaginative and done.” Or you will love something that no one else has ever heard of.  Or you will love something dark and edgy and or obscure and people will roll their eyes and say, “What, do you want people to think you’re dark and edgy and obscure?”

Alternatively, you will not love the thing that everyone else loves, and you will wonder what precisely is wrong with you that the sight of that thing is aggravating the shit out of you now when the whole world sings its praises as one.

People will irritate you.  They’ll irritate you with headcanons that make no sense and misinterpretations of canon.  They will make the same jokes 500 times.  They will overwhelm your corner of fandom with something you either are tired of hearing about or don’t care about.  They will post art that isn’t theirs.  You will meet people who think you are the greatest person ever and bombard you with messages  only to wander off when they find someone new or shinier; you will meet people whom you admire and who do not really seem to notice you exist.

So give zero fucks about it.  Seriously.  Like what you like, blacklist what you need to blacklist, and ignore everything else.  Be friends, play nice, enjoy it.  And in the meantime, just do you.  Like what you like, love what you love, and to hell with all the rest of it.

TITANIC NEWS...

"RMS Titanic, Inc., the salvor-in-possession of the Titanic wreck site, will soon be conducting a research-focused expedition using remotely operated vehicles to capture high-resolution images of the wreck site and surrounding debris field. As part of our partnership with RMST, we are excited to announce that our team of researchers, 3D artists, and Titanic enthusiasts will be providing our assistance to this incredible endeavor.

RMST has graciously included our team in the planning process for this expedition and has asked for a list of recommendations to work into their dive schedule - recommendations that may aid our ongoing effort to recrate Titanic in a virtual world. Being that so much of Titanic remains a mystery to this day, this is an opportunity of a lifetime for our team.

But we hope to make this an opportunity for our community as well.

During our April 14th Real-Time Anniversary Livestream, we will announce how our community can participate in the upcoming expedition to Titanic. We will provide an email address to which Titanic enthusiasts everywhere can send their ideas and their most pressing wreck site questions. We will then sift through these ideas and submit our favorites to the expedition team. Who knows, your curiosity may lead to discovery!

So join us on April 14th for our Real-Time Anniversary Livestream and have your ideas ready to submit! The stream begins at 9:00PM EDT only on YouTube @TitanicHG.

We are so appreciate of RMS Titanic, Inc. and their genuine desire to expand our community's knowledge of Titanic and we look forward to working with them in the North Atlantic!"

For more information on this announcement and a look at our newest update to the TITANIC: PROJECT 401 Demo, join us for one of our other livestreams TOMORROW (April 6th) at 4:01pm EDT at youtube.com/@TitanicHG

Guys, if you read on AO3 please try to create an account. So many of us writers are going to be forced to lock down our fics to registered users out of necessity to help keep AI away, and it kills us because we don’t want to stop any of you from reading.

AO3 is invite only. So if you know an AO3 user, ask if they have an invitation to give you (we’re given invite codes to share with others who want to join) because that’s an easy way to get in. If you don’t know someone you can ask, this is AO3’s instructions for requesting one from them…

I know this seems like an extra step and maybe you don’t think you need it and can just read from people who haven’t locked their fics. But this isn’t just about you as the reader. If you enjoy fics and you want to keep them coming, this is how you support your favorite writers! If our stats and comments plummet, I guarantee writing is going to start going down as well. Nobody wants that! So please consider making an account and signal boosting this as well! 🙏🏻

**NOTE: AO3 indicates (as of today) there’s 48k some people in the queue for invites and they’re sending out about 5k per day. That’s not a bad wait at all!!**

If you need an invite, DM me. I will gladly give you one!! 💞
