Remember how we were little and we loved pink and Barbie and dolls and princesses?

Remember how we got old enough to realize that people were making fun of us and not enough people told us to ignore them so we got embarrassed and we hated ourselves. Pink was our least favorite color until perhaps recently when we were neutral towards it at best.

But something in us changed when we decided we needed to see Barbie (2023). The women and girls I saw wearing their best pinks today. I purposely bought MYSELF something pink for the first time I can remember.

We’re giving ourselves the freedom we took away.

the thing about barbie is that it captures the exact feeling of growing up as a girl. you begin with thinking everything is perfectly pink, that you are perfect, until.

until someone stares at you.

until you compare yourself to others.

until you feel the fear of aging.

until someone assults you.

until someone makes you feel unsafe.

until you notice the horrors of the world around you.

until you want to crawl into a hole where no one will look at you.

until you feel like you can do nothing at all.

and you have to find ways to stop these things. these things that you can not change, and barely influence.

and you think nothing in the world is fixable. you arent fixable.

until you see friends laugh together.

until you have a nice moment with a stranger.

until you look at the beauty of nature.

until you talk about these issues with others.

until you find community.

until you find yourself.

and then the world starts looking a little pinker again.

I'm loving this new trend of people going to zoos and participating in animal enrichment. We use to observe large exotic animals for our entertainment, but the fact is that we are now trying to make ourselves equally as entertaining for them. It's interactive, completely parpicipatory and I would argue that eventually someone's gonna come up with something new enough that it expland ethologists understanding about how some animals think, problem solve, communicate and feel and I think its fantastic.

To anyone rbing this going "you can do this?" YES! It's apart of having friends I feel, youre a little bit in love with them. And that's fine, that's okay, you're meant to love and it's only human to love your friends with your whole heart. And to those of you going "but be careful" sure, but also remember that the love you give someone never really does go away. They still have it they will still get reminded of it somehow, you will also still remember it. Even if things do turn out bad with that person. You didn't waste your love, you loved how you were meant to, that's all you really can do
