Well, the elastic waistband finally gave out on my old pair of gi pants. All stretchy capabilities of the elastic are gone. I’ll miss the label of “123” which was my student number when I first started at the old dojo, back when it was located in Sensei Jason’s loft apartment.

After a loooong hiatus, I got back on the mat today for my fitness kickboxing class. Funny how time passes but things still stay the same. The sign in desk, the locker room, the mat, the bags, the structure of the class were all the same. It was like slipping into a cozy pair of well-worn shoes. Hash tag of the week is #feeltheburn - clever!

I told my dojo buddy that I felt bad that people don’t usually ask me to uke for them at belt promotionals. I get it, I’m a tiny girl at 5'1" and it looks a lot more impressive to throw around a big guy.

His response to this was to ask me to uke for him at September’s test. He said that I deserve to be an uke, and I need to show everyone that I can take it!

Because of that, I’m actually looking forward to getting thrown around. I feel almost like I’m the one being tested, not him!

I love falling so much, and I’ve had to work hard to be taken seriously as a faller. I have so much to say about that, but I’m so weary of thinking about it. But yea, girl. You go get it. I’m glad your dojo buddy will give you the ol’ toss. :D It’s such an honor to be right there with our friends when they’re testing. it’s such a whole body challenge of athleticism and peace to take the falls. Ah. This is soo good. Real good! I’m so happy for you. <3

Thanks sellaphix! Would love to hear your stories sometime about falling. It's true, being chosen as an uke is an honor... I hadn't realized it until getting a little higher up in the ranks. :)

My jiu jitsu dojo rents space from a karate school. For the past 8 months since we came here, we've had to put our mats down and then pick them back up after class. Thanks to some scheduling changes at the school, we don't have to do that anymore starting September. This is the last time we are putting the mats down on a Saturday morning.

Anyone can train in perfect conditions. When they wake up feeling great. When their body has no aches, no pains. When the weather is warm and sunny. When outside life has no drama and work isn’t stressing them out. When significant others and family are loving and supportive.

It’s the dedicated few who wake up in the rain, with outside stresses pounding away at their willpower, with bruises and aching muscles, that get up and say - let’s make this happen.

You can do this. You have it within you to overcome anything set against you, even yourself. Get out there and make today happen.
