With regard to Helena's theme and The Winter Soldier.
So I am far from being the only person to notice that Helena’s theme (from Orphan Black) and The Winter Soldier’s theme (from Cap 2 Winter Soldier) both feature very similar 2-note descending screeches. It’s much more prominent in Helena’s theme, but The Winter Soldier’s leitmotif still features it quite a bit.
Now it does make sense for the two to have some similar themes in their music since the two characters are themselves similar. I mean, they’re both brainwashed assassins from eastern European Slavic countries. You’d expect to see those similarities carry over to their themes. But for it to be that specific? For such a similar two note descending screech? It always felt too weirdly specific to be just a coincidence. I always wondered if there was some specific thing both composers heard and decided to incorporate into their respective themes.
And now I think I’ve found it.
Specifically, the “Squeaky Wheel” numbers station.
If you don’t know what a numbers station is, they’re shortwave radio stations that mostly broadcast a simple, repetitive noise ALL THE TIME. Day after day for hour after hour, the same repetitive noise just repeating endlessly. The only times the noises turn off, a voice will recite an incomprehensible list of random letters and numbers. (hence, calling them numbers stations.) It’s believed that most are used by one nation to send signals to their spies in other countries - the broadcasts aren’t directed at a single target so they can’t be used as evidence of spying, and the random letters and numbers can be decrypted into a comprehensible message by a simple and unbreakable one-time pad. Untraceable and unbreakable, perfect for spies and undercover agents.
But the numbers aren’t the focus for this. The noises are. Each station has its own distinctive repetitive noise, and numbers stations enthusiasts tend to refer to each station by a descriptor of its noise. There’s The Pip, the Buzzer, and very notably, The Squeaky Wheel… which features a VERY familiar sounding two-note descending screech. Seriously, just listen:
Sounds pretty similar, doesn’t it? But it gets better. The Squeaky Wheel is a Russian numbers station - the letters and numbers are in Russian, and the transmitter is based in Rostov-on-Don in Russia, which ties up The Winter Soldier connection. And as for the Ukrainian Helena? Rostov-on-Don is pretty fucking close to Ukraine, and The Squeaky Wheel can likely be heard over the entire country.
This probably doesn’t mean anything for either character, nor either universe. Just thought it was an interesting find.
