In general, straight men are very dismissive of art/entertainment that doesn’t personally speak to them and their experiences, especially if it’s something that deals with emotions or a complex inner world. you can see this in the way male rock critics (or amateur critics) dismiss Stevie Nicks. her music is emotional, symbolic, and deals with themes of romantic love, female friendship, mythology, and the female experience.  she doesn’t really sing about sex or perform for the Male Gaze. 

this is baffling to most straight men because while they can accept the occasional woman in rock music, she either has to perform sexiness (Debbie Harry), have the badass swagger and bravado of a male frontman (Joan Jett) or both (Chrissie Hynde). A woman in rock is not allowed to be vulnerable, emotional, or contemplative. Male rock musicians are allowed to show their vulnerable sides (Eric Clapton’s “Tears In Heaven”, John Lennon’s “Plastic Ono Band”) and are celebrated for it. They’re thought to be very deep for confronting their inner emotional turmoil, but when a female rock musician such as Stevie Nicks does it, it’s “girl stuff” and she’s looked down on for not being stronger or more badass.
