「巫女」::The miko looked up at the boy with a kind of an-empty confused appearing look. Like she didn't know what he was talking about. Although of course--she did. And really, he was the one who usually did that, it worked for him. She'd figured why not her too?

. Well, she hadn't actually thought that at the time she did it...But it was just proof that his influence was strong.

. She bit her lower lip a bit, and dragged her eyes diagonally away.::

. "Well--that's just it, I--wasn't thinking? I was just--reacting. Something you do all the time... I don't know that I was trying to prove anything. I mean I don't--need to, right? Jumping in without a thought was just kind of instinctual. Helping people is just--part of what I do..."

. ::Even though in hindsight it was stupid, she knew, but--they did say hindsight was 20/20 for a reason.::

He... He had no words.

Not at first anyway, thus all he could do was stare at her in disbelief and perhaps a little envy. She jumped into that fight like a champ and had she been anyone else he would cheer her own to kick everyone's ass.

But she was his mate and he knew better.

After a few long moments he drew a slow breath and in a perfectly calm tone tried to reason with her.

"Koishii, that's my job though. I am supposed to be the one who jumps into the fights no matter what while you are supposed to be the rational one watching everything. What you did --" He paused and motioned to the pile of unconscious bodies not too far away.

"- Could have gotten us both killed! Cuz I am not the kind of guy who thinks rationally! I just react. I just hit things harder when it doesn't work the first time. You are better as seeing what I gotta do from afar."

Suiko (554-628) is regarded as Japan’s first empress regnant. Far from being a mere figurehead, she left a lasting impact.

Though she is the first female ruler in the traditional order chronology, Japanese history hints at previous female rulers such as queens Himiko and Iyo of Yamatai during the 3rd century. There was also the case of Princess Itoyo, daughter of Emperor Richū, who refused the throne but ruled during 484 and 485 until a new sovereign was enthroned.

Rise of a sovereign

Suiko was described as beautiful and forward-thinking. At the age of seventeen, she married her half-brother Bidatsu and was his consort for sixteen years. She didn’t immediately ascend the throne after his death. Her predecessor, Shushun, became embroiled in a conflict with Suiko’s powerful uncle: Soga no Umako, resulting in his assassination. 

Suiko was thus chosen as a ruler to appease the tensions. Her ties to the influential Soga clan were another argument in her favor. She refused at first, but ultimately accepted and ascended to the throne in 593, at the age of 39. One of her first decisions was to set her capital in the port town of Settsu to better serve the Soga’s commercial interests.

. ::She pointed out and made a face as he commented that he'd be out trying to make whoever did this to the kid pay--if he was theirs.::

. "No, no you wouldn't be. Even if he was ours. Because we'd be trying to save ours by any means necessary FIRST also. Getting revenge, making the idiot who did this pay--would come after."

. ::She muttered. She heard his caveat, about it not bringing her down, but she said nothing to it. She could make no such promise. Every life was precious really, even if it wasn't one created by them. What kind of miko would she be, if she didn't have the empathy deep enough to feel every life lost under her care? All she could do now, however, was try--and pray that this little life, would not be lost. She kept working.::

"That would be the right thing to do wouldn't it? And your right, you'd be telling me to stay when I wanted to rip the bastards responsible apart. "

With a little sigh he finished with what he could. To him the kid looked bad. The kind of bad he'd seen far too many times before in this world that was so often cruel and unforgiving. But he couldn't give up now, not while Kagome was determined to try her best to avoid the inevitable.

"Yeah, no promises. I get it. If you need me to get something else just say it."

「巫女」:: "Yes, yes it would. And glad you understand that."

. ::She replied. She knew the child looked bad, but she was determined to exhaust every avenue she had at her disposal before even considering calling it. As said, she knew perfectly well that this was not their child. But he was someone's. And they were probably worried about him, same as they would be if he had been theirs.

. Empathy was one of her greatest strengths and one of her biggest faults. But because she had it, she could not dismiss it. So, she worked, seemingly tirelessly, on trying to save this boy from the awful wound presented on his head. Maybe she'd be able to, maybe she wouldn't, but she'd be able to live a tiny easier knowing she gave it her all. Even if the sadness from failing and losing a child's life wound up eating her from the inside out.

. She exhaled slowly and nodded at the boy's offer.::

. "Will do, koibito. That I can promise."

:: He'd feel better knowing she would be ok after this whole thing played out. As much as he hoped the kid would pull through...

He'd seen too much death in his time, he was almost numb to it's presence. He grew up seeing the worst in people - the absolute worst - and this was neither the first or last kid he'd seen in this state.

It might not end well and all he could think about was his mate. He scooted a little aside to let her work on the kid. Trying his best to mop up the blood spilled all around with a rag. ::

"What do you think the kid's chances are?"

'What if this kid was ours?'

A sweatdrop rolled down as he tried to finish rewrapping the wounds. Unwittingly leaving those words to hang in the air between them, letting them haunt them as they worked to save this poor kid. He wanted to be as sympathetic as she was but he could not find it in his heart. Not for a very long time.

Though there was only so long he could stand that haunted feeling. Flicking both ears back he sat back on his haunches and gazed at the boy. Talking to the miko all the while.

"Ya know he ain't -- right?"

Tilting his head some in thought he grumbled. "*If* he were our kid, I would be hunting down who did this to him right now. I'd be making heads roll for this happening. You know that. "

Finally turning to the miko he gave a shrug. "He ain't ours, but that doesn't mean we can't try everything to save him. Just, don't let it bring you down if it doesn't work is all I am asking."

"Look I am not saying we shouldn't try everything possible..." He said with a little shake of his head. Needing to pause a moment as he changed the bandages, continuing as he set the blood soaked rags aside.

"But don't take it personally if it doesn't work alright? "

She was a miko and he knew how much a hit it was for her to fail to save a life. Especially a vulnerable life. He couldn't help but try to watch out for her as he put pressure on the bleeding wound. Knowing deep down by the sight of the blood he'd already cleaned up, there wasn't much left for this kid to lose.
