It reads: Pure Blood. Mixed Blood. In the end it doesn’t matter. You’re still Paraguayan. I wanted to make something to fight the constant reminder that in the United States people belong to their own categories. If you’re white, you’re white. If you’re black, you’re black. Each individual is categorized in their own group based on their looks. Often, as a Latina, I too am categorized inside my own little group and the funny thing is that sometimes it can get confusing. There are people that will tell me that I’m not Latina, their answer would be because I’m white. There’s people who will ask me if I’m adopted and there’s even people that ask me why I don’t have an accent. Such marked categorizations are still a new concept to me. In my country we have a saying that I’ve heard more than a few times that always makes me giggle. “We come in all colors” It’s funny because it’s true. No matter how we look or where our families come from, if you are born in Paraguay, you are from Paraguay. Darker skin, lighter skin, black hair, bright eyes… They’re just distinctive features some of us may have. They’re marking of our ancestry. We share the same culture. We live in the same place and yes, we may look different from each other sometimes but that doesn’t change it. It doesn’t change the fact that all of us come from the same place with the same overall culture, the same overall language and the same overall wonderful crazy positivity. I just wish people in USA would realize than a little more often because you guys are exactly the same as we are. You come in all colors but you all share the place where you come from.
Come to new York queens everyone here is so diverse even a day riding a subway feels like you just went around the world!
