“Yes of course. It will give you an idea of what I need to fix.” Yami turned the laptop to Godling, explaining what each picture showed. Pointing out the fracture on his hip, Yami explained why metal would help it heal. “Think of the screws like stitches. Your skin heals together faster when the edges touch as a result of being stitched. The metal screws work like that bringing the bone back to touching and letting it heal much faster. Being a hairline fracture and the shape it is, the bone can be lined up properly, so this is actually very lucky for you. The screws mainly serve to let the fracture heal easier and faster, and I would remove them once your bone has healed.”
Recovery time was always an important factor in his practice, knowing everyone has lives they want to get back to or rather need to. A hip injury could keep Godling off his feet if it got worse. Luckily, it wasn’t so bad that it was impeding his daily routine. But if it wasn’t treated properly of course, he could easily worsen the fracture and lose his ability to walk for some time.
Yami wasn’t surprised at Godling’s reaction. Somehow he always felt guilty telling patients he had to remove a part of their body. Though Godling was taking it far better than most people would. Yami nodded. “If I could save it, I would. But even if I could without the dying flesh spreading, you wouldn’t be able to use it.” Many more options could be explored were the arm to be removed and Godling had a much better chance at a full recovery if so. “I apologize for this news, but I believe this is the best thing to do. And yes, certainly. I can do both surgeries at the same time while you’re under anesthesia of course. You won’t feel a thing during surgery, though there will be some residual pain afterward. I can prescribe you some pain medication of course to ease your body. Your arm might feel strange for a while, and you might get a sensation of it still being there, called phantom arm syndrome. That should dissipate after some time.”
The whole time, Yami was writing down some notes and drawing a quick sketch of where he was going to amputate the arm. When Godling offered Yami the option to call him by his real name, even if in private, he couldn’t help but smile. They started off at such a bad start and had a very bumpy, rocky relationship ever since. But now, even if under the pretenses of live-saving surgery, it felt like they were finally getting along. It made him very happy. “...Bakura, then,” he responded. “Do you have any questions, Bakura? I want to make sure you are fully informed about something like this, and making the decision of your own accord.” Despite the time quickly passing and the need to begin surgery growing, his patient’s consent was equally important to Yami.
“If you are ready, I can begin the procedure and get your anesthesia prepared.”
